My car has 200000 miles.
My car has an automatic transmission.

Hi there. If you replace a fuel pump, hear it running but are not getting fuel to the engine, there could be several possible sources. The fuel pump is the first component in the fuel system that will pick up fuel from the tank and distribute it to the combustion chamber to be burned. There are more than 10 individual fuel system parts that can be clogged, incorrectly installed or damaged that would cause this issue. It’s also possible that your hard to start issue is not related to the fuel system, but the ignition system instead. You might want to have one of our professional mobile mechanics come to your location and complete a car is hard to start inspection, so they can determine why your Caprice won’t start.

If your car doesn`t start with a new fuel pump, chances are the fuel pump is either not hooked up right or is broken. Double check that the pump is correctly installed and all hose attachments are plugged in. Next, check for any blockages along the fuel line—this can also cause your car not to start.
Difficult Starts

If your vehicle`s fuel pump cannot get gas from the tank to the engine, you will have trouble starting your car. The car will struggle to start and run because the pump cannot push enough gas through. A worn pump loses its pressure and the engine is being starved of gasoline.

If you there is no power to the fuel pump or the relay, then there may be a possible electrical issue with the vehicle. I would first verify that the main EFI, fuel pump, and ignition fuses are not blown, as these can sometimes cut off power to the fuel system.
Note: The fuel pump shut off switch reset button is usually located either under the dash in the driver compartment or under the driver or passenger seat. Just move the seat forward and pull back on the carpet or popping off the cover under the seat to access the switch.
Bad Sensors

One common culprit for this problem is the crankshaft position sensor, which measures the position and speed of the crankshaft. The computer uses the information from this sensor to know when to fire the spark plugs. If the sensor isn`t working, the spark plugs won`t fire, keeping the engine from starting.

This usually means the battery is bad and incapable of handling a huge request for power to crank the engine over. Headlights begin white and bright, when you try to start the engine, they dim to nothing or almost nothing then as soon as you let go of the key, the headlights QUICKLY bounce back to white and bright.
The fuel pump has a check valve built into it that is supposed to keep pressure to the injection system when you shut down and vehicle sits. If the pressure drops then the pump has to prime the system to bring the pressure high enough to start and run the engine.
If a fuel pump isn`t installed correctly, it either won`t work at all or won`t supply enough fuel to the engine. When the fuel pump isn`t working right, your engine isn`t getting the amount of fuel it needs to run well. Your engine loses power and fuel efficiency.
Debris blocking the suction strainer or foot valve is the most common cause. A blockage in the intake line can cause the water in the pump casing to overheat and literally boil out of the casing causing the pump to lose prime.

Just replaced my fuel pump but its not getting any power tested fuel pump relay and fuel fuse both good tested the wires all good.
ANSWER : You need to look at the theft light on dash to make sure it comes on and goes off when you turn the key to the on position. If light comes on and stays on then your theft system is causing the fuel pump to not be engaged. I recommend you check the theft system and then scan the computer for theft system codes. You may need to reprogram the keys to work or you have an bad sensor for the ignition key in the steering column.

After replacing the fuel pump, filter, relay, and 2 of 4 injectors, my car still won’t start – 1997 Suzuki Sidekick
ANSWER : Hi and thanks for your question. This seems to be the camshaft sensor, crankshaft sensor, and the MAF (Mass Air Flow) sensor that is causing this issue. The MAF sensor will make the computer think that there is no air when there is air causing the computer to shut off the injectors or the ignition.

The camshaft sensor will tell the computer which cylinder is firing and where to apply fuel. The crankshaft sensor is where the computer knows where piston 1 is and when to fire the ignition and injectors, but it is not precise so the engine will not run correctly. If the crankshaft sensor is failing, it will cut off everything but allow the engine to crank only. Find the sensor that has failed and replace it.

If you need further assistance with your vehicle, then seek out a technician, such as one from YourMechanic, who can find and replace either the crankshaft, camshaft, or the MAF sensor.

Replaced fuel pump. Car won’t start. 2002 Infinity I35
ANSWER : Hi there – the metal component you describe is a fuel check valve on the fuel return line. Its function is to maintain a small amount of pressure in the fuel system so that starting does not require the fuel pump to run very long before the engine will start. Having replaced the fuel pump and fuel filter, I would check fuel pressure while the car is running. This is to check the fuel pump relay for burned contacts that won’t support full electrical current to the pump, and for proper fuel pressure – a malfunctioning fuel pressure regulator could also restrict power and higher speeds if pressure is too low. I would recommend an inspection of the fuel system by a mobile, professional mechanic, such as one from YourMechanic, who will come to your location, diagnose this problem, give you an accurate assessment of damage and cost estimate for repairs.

Fuel pump engages. Batery good, alternator good volts, jump start helps when wont start. Temp does not matter. Intermittent?
ANSWER : Hello. Thank you for writing in. There are several reasons your vehicle may only start when jump starting. The first and most common is a build up of resistance that is causing you to need a boost of voltage to get the engine started. This may be due to poor battery cables, a bad ground connection, a poor starter solenoid, and a couple of other issues. The first thing you want to do is perform a visual inspection of the starting system. Make sure there is no corrosion build up in the battery cables. You can also check the resistance across these wires and make sure you have a solid connection between components. You then want to make sure the starter solenoid is doing its job. It is responsible for taking the small amount of electricity sent by the ignition and turning it into a huge electrical charge that is strong enough to push over the engine with the help of some gear ratios in its favor. Do some more testing, and stick to the basics before assuming its something seriously complicated.

Engine crank, no coil spark, fuel pump does not kick in.
ANSWER : Hi there. There could be multiple issues causing your lack of spark problem, ranging from a minor electrical short in the main relay to an issue with your ECU. In order to know for sure, you should have a professional mobile mechanic complete an electrical problems inspection.

1993 Ford F150 4.9 straight 6 fuel pump keeps running, won’t start, replaced relay and fuel pressure regulator, still having the same problem
ANSWER : Hi, thanks for writing in. You need to have the fuel pressure checked to see if the pressure is low. The fuel pump inlet screen may be getting clogged causing the pressure to drop off but the pump will continue to run. You may need to replace the pump if it is not producing enough pressure. If you have dual tanks then you may have a defective switching valve in center of vehicle on frame. If you would like help, consider having an expert automotive technician from YourMechanic come to your home or office to test the system for you, and make or suggest any repairs as needed.

I put a fuel pump in and a fuel pump relay. The relay works but there is no power to the fuel pump.
ANSWER : Hi there. There could be an issue with the wiring to the fuel pump between the fuel pump relay and the fuel pump. Remove the wiring to the fuel pump and check the resistance from the wiring from the relay to the fuel pump. There should be no more than 1 ohm of resistance. If there is more resistance than 1 ohm, then there is a break or corrosion in the wiring. Also, check the ground circuit and make sure that the fuel pump is getting a proper ground. If you need further assistance with your fuel pump not operating, then seek out a professional, such as one from Your Mechanic, to help you.
