Replaced fuel pump. Car won’t start. 2002 Infinity I35

Car would drive steady at 45 mph, but would seem to run out of gas at 65 mph. Stopped the car. Stopped the engine. started engine and drove home at 40-45 mph.
Decided the fuel pump was faulty and/or the fuel filter within the pump assembly was too dirty to allow fuel to pass through to support 65 mph. Replaced the electric pump, the fuel filter in the pump assembly and the fuel gauge sender section of the total assembly. Did not replace the small metal part that is in the fuel circuit and appears to be a fuel bypass device. This is snapped onto the fuel filter within the whole fuel pump assem

Hi there – the metal component you describe is a fuel check valve on the fuel return line. Its function is to maintain a small amount of pressure in the fuel system so that starting does not require the fuel pump to run very long before the engine will start. Having replaced the fuel pump and fuel filter, I would check fuel pressure while the car is running. This is to check the fuel pump relay for burned contacts that won’t support full electrical current to the pump, and for proper fuel pressure – a malfunctioning fuel pressure regulator could also restrict power and higher speeds if pressure is too low. I would recommend an inspection of the fuel system by a mobile, professional mechanic, such as one from YourMechanic, who will come to your location, diagnose this problem, give you an accurate assessment of damage and cost estimate for repairs.

If your car doesn`t start with a new fuel pump, chances are the fuel pump is either not hooked up right or is broken. Double check that the pump is correctly installed and all hose attachments are plugged in. Next, check for any blockages along the fuel line—this can also cause your car not to start.
Difficult Starts

If your vehicle`s fuel pump cannot get gas from the tank to the engine, you will have trouble starting your car. The car will struggle to start and run because the pump cannot push enough gas through.

If the engine holds compression well, and the fuel system is working correctly, but it still won`t start, that tells us that your car`s spark plugs may not be working. The spark plugs ignite the air/fuel mixture inside the engine`s cylinders. It`s the resulting explosion that actually powers your car.
Note: The fuel pump shut off switch reset button is usually located either under the dash in the driver compartment or under the driver or passenger seat. Just move the seat forward and pull back on the carpet or popping off the cover under the seat to access the switch.
Bad Sensors

One common culprit for this problem is the crankshaft position sensor, which measures the position and speed of the crankshaft. The computer uses the information from this sensor to know when to fire the spark plugs. If the sensor isn`t working, the spark plugs won`t fire, keeping the engine from starting.

A poor connection can cause enough resistance to lower the amount of voltage reaching the pump. This causes the pump to turn more slowly than it should, and can shorten the life of the pump. Replacing the vehicle side connector should solve the issues with poor connections, but sometimes causes another problem.
Start the car and let it idle. Install a fuel pressure gauge, run the pump, and note the pressure reading. Then compare it to the manufacturer specification. If the pressure is low, you should address that problem.
The fuel pump has a check valve built into it that is supposed to keep pressure to the injection system when you shut down and vehicle sits. If the pressure drops then the pump has to prime the system to bring the pressure high enough to start and run the engine.
In contrast, the fuel pressure created by mechanical fuel pumps is much less, usually in the 1–4 psi range. Second, this is important because the fuel system needs to be primed—the lines between the tank and the engine have to be filled with fuel.
Press down the rubber reset button on the top of the inertia switch. 3. Turn the ignition switch to position `II`, pause for a few seconds, then return the key to position `0`.
your car fails to start: the engine`s computer uses the map sensor to gauge atmospheric pressure before the engine is started. a false reading could cause too much or too little fuel to be delivered to the engine. both conditions could keep it from firing up.
A malfunctioning mass airflow sensor can also make it difficult to start your automobile. This can be due to the air and fuel in balance in the combustion chamber or because the main computer chip has received an error code from the sensor and does not want to start your car.
Without this relay, the engine would not receive fuel while starting. The pump that delivers fuel to the engine while the engine is running requires electricity in order to operate. This electricity is created by an oil pressure device in the engine.
If a fuel pump isn`t installed correctly, it either won`t work at all or won`t supply enough fuel to the engine. When the fuel pump isn`t working right, your engine isn`t getting the amount of fuel it needs to run well. Your engine loses power and fuel efficiency.
A fuel pressure regulator (FPR) is a device that controls the pressure of fuel supplied to the fuel injectors on an engine.
In some cases, using the wrong fuel is harmless. Other times, like if you accidentally put E85 fuel in a car that`s not designed for it, you can void your engine warranty or cause costly damage to fuel lines. The price to fix a car from a fueling mishap can be steep, but there`s no reason to panic.

My car stutters after driving it for a few minutes – 2002 Toyota
ANSWER : This may also be caused by what is called the fuel pressure regulator. This is a unit that helps to maintain the fuel pressure at the proper level. When this is not working properly, the fuel pump may be pumping properly, but the fuel may not arrive at the fuel injectors at the proper psi. When this happens, this can cause a lean fuel condition which may cause the car to hesitate, misfire or stall. I would recommend having an expert from YourMechanic come to your location to diagnose your fuel pressure.

My car stutter starts, but only after driving it for a few minutes.
ANSWER : Hey there. This may also be caused by what is called the fuel pressure regulator. This is a unit that helps to maintain the fuel pressure at the proper level. When this is not working properly, the fuel pump may be pumping properly, but the fuel may not arrive at the fuel injectors at the proper psi. Just replaced my fuel pump but its not getting any power tested fuel pump relay and fuel fuse both good tested the wires all good.
ANSWER : You need to look at the theft light on dash to make sure it comes on and goes off when you turn the key to the on position. If light comes on and stays on then your theft system is causing the fuel pump to not be engaged. I recommend you check the theft system and then scan the computer for theft system codes. You may need to reprogram the keys to work or you have an bad sensor for the ignition key in the steering column.

Car will crank but no start… Fuel pump not coming on. New pump, relay, etc. Will start when hot wire runs from pump wires to bat
ANSWER : There are a couple of approaches to take here – either start from the battery and work "towards" the fuel pump, fuse box, ignition switch, fuel pump relay, and wiring connections in between. Or, as you have done, start at the pump with 12v, and move backwards towards the battery. This will require a GM service manual, or wiring diagram at least, with connection locations as well.

I would recommend having a certified technician from YourMechanic diagnose this starting issue, get an accurate assessment of damage and cost estimate for repairs. YourMechanic.com can dispatch a mobile, professional mechanic to your location for this repair.

New battery & fuel pump. Hours later car starts and shuts down 3X in a row. Finally it starts, 48 hours later, won’t start at all
ANSWER : Checking all the fuses was a good move. I would also want to put a scan tool on it and check for diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) as well as seeing the data that the computer is seeing.

A fuel pressure test would be a good idea to verify correct pressure and so that you’d be able to eliminate that possibility. It should be 58psi on your Magnum.

I also recommend getting your battery tested (I know, it’s new, have it tested anyway) and be sure it’s charged to at least 75%. And yes, loose battery cable connections can result in electrical problems.

If you need some assistance with this, consider enlisting a certified mechanic who can perform the checks I’ve mentioned and diagnose your starting issue firsthand. The mechanic can then perform the necessary repairs once the problem has been isolated. Good luck.

I replaced the fuel pump and now my truck won’t start
ANSWER : Hi there:

In some cases, when the fuel pump is not supplying fuel from the tank to the fuel injectors it’s due to one of three different issues. First, it’s possible that the pump or some of the hose attachments are installed backwards or that there is a blockage somewhere in the fuel lines; typically at the first fuel filter. Finally, it’s possible that you have a ground issue somewhere near the fuel pump that’s causing a reduction in power. The best way to trace this issue is to contact a mobile mechanic and have them help you diagnose this issue; as the process for tracing a fuel pump delivery issue can be complex and very time consuming.
