Replace timing belt.

The code readout said the camshaft position sensor needed replacing. I replaced it and it still sounds the same, though no new code comes up. I think the timing belt needs replacing.
Experienced mechanics share their insights in answering this question :
Camshaft and Crankshaft position sensors are somewhat common failures seen in the Hyundai Santa Fe, mainly due to the temperature abuse they both receive inside of the engine. From extreme hot when the engine runs, to very cool ambient temperature that can drop it to more than 200 degrees difference, it is no wonder these parts begin to crack or break apart internally. When either of these parts fail, they can’t do their job letting the computer know where the crankshaft and camshafts are positioned. This leads the problem you experienced.

In regards to your timing belt, Hyundai’s maintenance schedule recommends changing the timing belt every 90k or having it checked every 2 years, whichever comes first. If you have not replaced the timing belt, or have not had it checked in the last couple of years, it is a highly recommended that you get this service done to keep your engine safe from internal engine damage. Timing belts seem to fail at the worst times and there are usually no signs it is going to happen. You do not want to be in a situation where you are stuck at the grocery store because your timing belt has failed, or worse, have your car die while driving. Make sure this is a service you get done so it gives you the peace and mind that you’re doing what is needed to keep your car reliable.

How to Identify and Fix Common car Problems ?

Most versions of the Santa Fe diesel had a timing chain, but there was a 2.2-litre CRDi diesel, codenamed aD4EB-V, made between 2006 and 2010 that had a belt.
For the model year 2006, the Hyundai Santa Fe is equipped with a timing belt and has an interference engine. The timing belt maintains the proper synchronization of camshaft and crankshaft inside the engine for smooth operation.
Timing belts are replaced as part of scheduled maintenance, usually every 60,000 to 100,000 miles.
They can go as long as 100,000 miles although it`s always a good idea to change it before then. Belt failure can cause extensive damage to the valves, pistons and other internal parts of the engine.
Although Hyundai uses a single timing belt on its 2.7L V6 engines, its 3.3L, double-overhead camshaft engine is equipped with one timing chain for each camshaft and one drive chain for the oil pump.
Best Answer. A 2.7 engine usually bends two valves when the timing belt goes. The exhaust valves are interfering with the pistons when the camshafts stop turning. One or usually both cylinder heads must be removed, repaired, and reinstalled.
The petrol V6 has a timing belt and should be changed every 90,000 km. The diesel has a chain that doesn`t require replacement.
After diagnostic test I was informed by the dealer that the timing chain in 2007 SantaFe 3.3L 6V needs to be replaced as the engine check light was going off. The cost of the repair is around $2400.
The recommended replacement according to mileage ranges from 60,000 miles to 150,000 miles. If your vehicle is 6 to 10 years old, it is recommended to replace the timing belt.
Cambelts or timing belts usually need to be replaced, usually between 40,000 and 100,000 miles. Alternatively, for lower mileage cars, the belt is advised to be replaced around four or five years.
Every 60k-90k miles.

If an engine is equipped with a timing belt, the timing belt must be replaced at the service interval specified by the vehicle manufacturer regardless of whether or not any problem is visible, typically in the range of 60,000 to 90,000 miles.

However, if the vehicle has a timing belt, there is a very specific interval for replacing it. Timing belt replacement is generally recommended every 60,000 to more than 100,000 miles, depending on the vehicle manufacturer.
If you have a 4-cylinder model from 2003-2007, you engine has a timing chain; if you have the V6 model from those years, it`s a timing belt.
Under the hood, all the 2023 Hyundai Palisade trim levels feature a rugged 3.8-liter V6 GDI engine that unleashes 291 hp of efficient power and 262 lb. -ft. of torque.
It is safer to replace the timing belt even earlier than the manufacturer recommends. In general, however, timing belts needs to be replaced from 60,000 miles up to 150,000 miles.
Best Answer. On Hyundai, all their engines are interference engines, so yes, they would bend the valves if the timing belt breaks.
Newer models use timing belts made of polyurethane and Kevlar for long life and durability. They can go as long as 100,000 miles although it`s always a good idea to change it before then.
Hyundai Santa Fe

The average lifespan of this popular SUV is 200,000 to 250,000 miles or 13 to 17 years. It can probably reach beyond 250,000 miles if you`re a mindful driver who keeps up with routine maintenance.

The Hyundai V8 uses a chain. The most common engine timing problems are with the variable valve timing actuators, oil control valves and oil-powered tensioners. These components can fail quickly if the owner does not keep up with the oil changes or uses the wrong oil.

Timing Belt Cover replacement and External Belt too.
ANSWER : The parts are touching likely because either the parts were not installed properly or fasteners may be missing or broken. If oil has been leaking, this can cause the seal around the covers to swell as well causing misalignment. Consider hiring an experienced technician like one from YourMechanic who can come out and take a closer inspection of the belt drive to see what is causing the misalignment and offer a more personal diagnosis as well as estimate the proper repairs.

My water pump is leaking but I replaced timing belt and pump a year ago. Can I just replace the water pump this time?
ANSWER : Hello. You can just replace the water pump in this case. Although, the cost of just the timing belt is fairly negligible in comparison to the total labor of the job. My estimator says the water pump is a 6.5 hour job. Multiply that by whatever the shop rate is and you have the total labor without parts. You end up saving about $100 or less on parts if you only replace the pump.

The deciding factor will be the condition of the timing belt. If it has problems, you won’t be saving yourself any money by reusing it. In addition, there are seals and pulleys that may need to be replaced as well.

Assuming all the related parts were replaced the first time around, there isn’t a reason you can’t reuse them. I would say you should weigh the savings of reusing them against the actual condition of the parts. This is best determined after a complete disassembly. Keep in mind, time estimates will vary a bit depending on many factors. Either way, the labor is the largest cost.

If you would like to have the water pump replaced, a certified professional from YourMechanic can come to your car’s location to perform this service at your convenience.

Replaced a timing belt and timing belt tensioner pulley. Still wont run. Why?
ANSWER : If you broke the timing belt while driving then you may have bent the valves. You should have the engine compression checked to see if you are loosing compression due to bent valves. If compression is low then have cylinders leak tested to see which cylinder is leaking and what valves are bent.

Timing belt is tight and yet appears to be slipping several teeth when belt is rotated,
ANSWER : This is okay since there are more notches on the belt than the amount on the sprockets. Once you aligned the first time the belt marks will almost never line up perfectly again. The marks are used to put the belt on correctly. They aren’t used as an indicator after the engine is turned again. You should be okay to start the motor as long as timing marks on pulleys line up. If you run into any issues, have a certified technician, like one from YourMechanic, assist you with the replacement of the timing belt.

1992 Acura Legend, when the timing belt goes, is it common for the valves to bend?
ANSWER : If the timing belt break off, the engine’s pistons will hit the valves as the pistons are moving. The engine is an interference engine and can cause damage to the internals of the engine. The last time the belt came off, the engine may have been running at an idle or not under power. It is possible for the valves to be bent. What I recommend doing is performing a leak down test on the engine with a timing belt on the engine and properly timed to determine if the valves were in fact bent. If all of the cylinders have a 80 percent hold and not leaking, then the engine is fine. If there is a mass leak on a cylinder, then the piston did some internal damage. I recommend seeking out a professional, such as one from Your Mechanic, to help you check your engine’s valve train with a leak down tester.
