Timing Belt Cover replacement and External Belt too.

Hello Carlos, about 10 month ago my timing belt was replaced, water pump and external belts too, but I noticed that the timing belt cover is rubbing or having contact with the belt that it made a cut in the cover and the thread of the belt is getting damage and I am afraid that is going to cut the belt leading to damage the engine. What do you recommend to do in this case before it gets worst.

My car has 192000 miles.
My car has an automatic transmission.

The parts are touching likely because either the parts were not installed properly or fasteners may be missing or broken. If oil has been leaking, this can cause the seal around the covers to swell as well causing misalignment. Consider hiring an experienced technician like one from YourMechanic who can come out and take a closer inspection of the belt drive to see what is causing the misalignment and offer a more personal diagnosis as well as estimate the proper repairs.

If your Honda Accord dates back to 1997-2002, it has a timing belt. If you have a 4-cylinder model from 2003-2007, you engine has a timing chain; if you have the V6 model from those years, it`s a timing belt.
From 2018 to the present, your Honda Accord will have a timing chain, but those specs vary a bit for previous model years. Here are the details: 2013-2017: V6 models have timing belts & 4-cylinder models have timing chains. 2008-2012: V6 models have timing belts & 4-cylinder models have timing chains.
According to the Honda maintenance schedule, your Honda`s timing belt and water pump generally needs to be inspected and/or replaced every 7 years or 60,000-100,000 miles traveled.
These kits contain the belt and all necessary drive components for the application. And for peace of mind, these components look like the original part and meet or exceed that it fits form and function so that the part will install the same as the original parts.
Your Guide to 1997 Honda Accord Scheduled Maintenance

If you put in the effort to keep up with proper maintenance, you could hit 200,000 miles (or beyond!) in your Accord.

Depending on the Honda, some Hondas have interference engines and this will destroy the engine. Other Honda engines are non-interference, and may have different outcomes. For example, yours is a `97 Accord that actually has a non-interference engine (unless it is a VTEC).
The Accord is a good used-car choice by virtue of being roomy, reliable and having clear controls. EX trims are the pick of the Accord line with alloy wheels, a sunroof and better audio system. Most samples will have a four-cylinder engine that, together with the automatic, makes for a smooth, unobtrusive powertrain.
The Honda Accord`s engine can last well over 200,000 miles, but it does begin to form a bad habit after the 70,000-mile mark—it suffers from excessive engine oil consumption.
The recommended replacement according to mileage ranges from 60,000 miles to 150,000 miles. If your vehicle is 6 to 10 years old, it is recommended to replace the timing belt.
The timing chain is an interior engine part, lubricated by the engine oil.
Should I replace the water pump with the timing belt? It is not necessary to replace both at the same time, however, it is highly recommended due to a high risk of engine damage. All parts of the synchronous drive have the same mileage and wear.
If there`s no receipt for a changed timing belt, always look closely for the sticker proving it was changed. If that`s missing, adjust your valuation of that vehicle to account for the work you will need to do.
Apparently, yes, the Accord can reach 500,000 miles and even more. In 2019, the owner of a 2000 Honda Accord hit one million miles.
lasts will depend on how well it is cared for and how often you drive it. But given proper maintenance, it should last 15-20 years or 200,000 – 300,000 miles. , make sure to follow the recommended maintenance schedule, stay up to date on your oil changes, and have any required repairs addressed promptly.
Yes the book shows that it is an interference engine.
This motor isn`t a VTEC, but it has 24 valves. Its greater displacement results in 170-horsepower. To get it, you have to go to an EX or LX sedan. Hooked to the V-6 sedans, and the EX wagon, which is powered by the 2.2-liter four, is an electronically controlled four-speed automatic transmission.
Generally, a four-cylinder engine offers better fuel economy than a six-cylinder. Its better fuel economy is mostly due to having less horsepower but also by being smaller and reducing the weight of your car. Add in turbocharging, and there`s even more improvement in fuel efficiency and performance.
Honda tends to receive better ratings for higher-quality interiors and standard features. Toyota is lauded as one of the most reliable car brands in the world and beats out Honda for expected longevity.
The 2021 Accord Hybrid comes out ahead for efficiency, with a combined EPA rating of 48 mpg; the 1.5-liter four-cylinder is the runner-up with up to 33 combined mpg, and the 2.0-liter gets a mere 26 mpg combined.
The most reliable Honda Accord year for this generation is the 2015 model. It has the least number of complaints out of this generation and only has four recalls under its belt. Also, the 2015 Accord has primarily minor issues, including clear coat problems and sudden loss of power.
Modify the suspension: Consider lowering and stiffening your car`s suspension to help improve performance. Supercharge or turbocharge the engine: The most expensive option, but also the most effective. This process involves forcing more air into the engine to create more power.
2004-2007, 2010-2011, 2014-2017, and 2019-2021 are the best years for the Honda Accord. But Accord buyers should stay away from the 2001-2003, 2008-2009, 2012-2013, and 2018 model years. The troubles with these Accords usually involve expensive repairs to the engine and catalytic converter.
Honda is one of the top brands in the world for longevity of vehicles. The Honda Civic and Accord will last between 200,000 and 300,000 miles when cared for properly.
However, if the vehicle has a timing belt, there is a very specific interval for replacing it. Timing belt replacement is generally recommended every 60,000 to more than 100,000 miles, depending on the vehicle manufacturer.

Do I need to replace timing belt again of replacing water pump?
ANSWER : The water pump and timing belt should be replaced as a set if the coolant leaked on the belt. The coolant leaking on it will damage the belt.

1992 Acura Legend, when the timing belt goes, is it common for the valves to bend?
ANSWER : If the timing belt break off, the engine’s pistons will hit the valves as the pistons are moving. The engine is an interference engine and can cause damage to the internals of the engine. The last time the belt came off, the engine may have been running at an idle or not under power. It is possible for the valves to be bent. What I recommend doing is performing a leak down test on the engine with a timing belt on the engine and properly timed to determine if the valves were in fact bent. If all of the cylinders have a 80 percent hold and not leaking, then the engine is fine. If there is a mass leak on a cylinder, then the piston did some internal damage. I recommend seeking out a professional, such as one from Your Mechanic, to help you check your engine’s valve train with a leak down tester.

Billing and parts question was sent to CS for the cost of parts and labor for valve train and related parts from a broken timing belt for a 1992 Acura Legend with a V6-3.2L engine.

timing belt and driving belt replacement interval
ANSWER : The timing belt should be checked every 24 months or 30K miles and replaced every 48 months or 60k miles. You are not due until 173k for a timing belt replacement, but should get inspected at 143k. The accessory belts should be inspected at every oil change and replaced as needed.

Timing belt is tight and yet appears to be slipping several teeth when belt is rotated,
ANSWER : This is okay since there are more notches on the belt than the amount on the sprockets. Once you aligned the first time the belt marks will almost never line up perfectly again. The marks are used to put the belt on correctly. They aren’t used as an indicator after the engine is turned again. You should be okay to start the motor as long as timing marks on pulleys line up. If you run into any issues, have a certified technician, like one from YourMechanic, assist you with the replacement of the timing belt.

Replaced a timing belt and timing belt tensioner pulley. Still wont run. Why?
ANSWER : If you broke the timing belt while driving then you may have bent the valves. You should have the engine compression checked to see if you are loosing compression due to bent valves. If compression is low then have cylinders leak tested to see which cylinder is leaking and what valves are bent.

My water pump is leaking but I replaced timing belt and pump a year ago. Can I just replace the water pump this time?
ANSWER : Hello. You can just replace the water pump in this case. Although, the cost of just the timing belt is fairly negligible in comparison to the total labor of the job. My estimator says the water pump is a 6.5 hour job. Multiply that by whatever the shop rate is and you have the total labor without parts. You end up saving about $100 or less on parts if you only replace the pump.

The deciding factor will be the condition of the timing belt. If it has problems, you won’t be saving yourself any money by reusing it. In addition, there are seals and pulleys that may need to be replaced as well.

Assuming all the related parts were replaced the first time around, there isn’t a reason you can’t reuse them. I would say you should weigh the savings of reusing them against the actual condition of the parts. This is best determined after a complete disassembly. Keep in mind, time estimates will vary a bit depending on many factors. Either way, the labor is the largest cost.

If you would like to have the water pump replaced, a certified professional from YourMechanic can come to your car’s location to perform this service at your convenience.
