Problems with battery draining for no ‘obvious’ reasons.

My '03 Chevy Surburban's battery drains when left undriven for more than 8-12 hrs. We bought the vehicle used in 2012. Since then, we've replace the battery 6 times! I purchased a new battery in Dec. 2015, and began dying in May… I've noticed a continuous strange clicking sound coming from somewhere near the steering column, after the key is removed. I took it to a mechanic last week, who didn't find anything wrong with it. In fact, it sat (undriven) at his shop for 2 days, and it started right up. I read somewhere that this is common for this years make and model. Does a

Your problem could be a module staying on or a faulty relay. If you have an alarm installed, they can sometimes drain a battery when engaged. The parasitic drain you are experiencing can be diagnosed by a certified technician that is very good with electrical diagnosis. I suggest having a certified technician, like one from YourMechanic, that is specifically familiar with a parasitic drain test, determine the exact cause of your draining battery.

How to Identify and Fix Common car Problems ?

The most common reasons a Chevrolet Suburban engine makes a ticking noise are low oil level or pressure, an issue with the ignition system, or an exhaust leak.
Electrical devices or lights left running, a defective charging system or alternator, and extreme weather are some common reasons but maybe it`s just time to get a new battery.”
What may drain a car battery when it`s off are things such as interior lights, door lights, or even bad relays. While your engine runs, the alternator recharges the battery — which is why you typically don`t have to worry about the battery dying while you`re blasting the radio on your drive to work!
It might be a battery or alternator problem.

Perhaps your battery`s dead, or your alternator, which charges the battery, isn`t working correctly. If the source of the clicking is electrical, the starter (a small motor energized by the battery that gets the engine running) doesn`t have enough juice to stay powered.

There is a wide variety of possible causes for the clicking sound when driving your car. However, the most common of them all are faulty CV joints, loose wheel nuts, bad struts, loose drive belts, low engine oil, faulty battery, inadequately inflated tires, etc.
Some of the most common reasons for a car battery to die repeatedly include loose or corroded battery connections, persistent electrical drains, charging problems, constantly demanding more power than the alternator can provide, and even extreme weather.
A corroded or defective alternator diode will faultily continue charging the circuit even when the car off. This, in turn, will drain your car battery and cause the car not to start.
Batteries that drain fast may be suffering from an alternator that is not charging properly, or the battery itself may be weak. Another option is an open circuit that continues to draw power after the vehicle is turned off.

ANSWER : Hi there. It’s quite possible that you have one of two things causing the drain to the battery. First, you have a bad ground somewhere in the main relay or fuse box or an exposed wire somewhere that is not allowing the circuit to complete from the alternator to the battery. This can cause a battery draining issue as you’re describing, but it could also be one of multiple other electrical problems. The best way to pinpoint the exact source is to have a professional mobile mechanic come to your location and complete a battery will not hold a charge inspection.

Battery drains overnight – 1990 Cadillac Allante
ANSWER : This problem can be diagnosed by connecting an ammeter to the positive (red) battery cable, observe the current drain (likely less than 1 amp). Then, one at a time, remove each fuse, check to see if the current drain has dropped to near 0, then reinsert the fuse. This process should identify the faulty circuit in most cases. A professional mechanic, like YourMechanic, can perform this procedure for you, and replace/repair the failing component.

Battery keeps getting drained while the car is off during the night
ANSWER : Hello there, thanks for writing in about your 2009 Chevrolet Aveo5. Batteries that drain overnight are not uncommon. This is called a parasitic drain and can have many different causes. The most likely are any aftermarket electrical accessories, such as the radio, a power seat, window switch, dome light or wiring fault. I recommend having a certified technician look over the vehicle’s electrical system in order to diagnose why the battery keeps draining and make the necessary repairs.

Battery light stays on and overnight battery drain. 2006 Land Rover LR3
ANSWER : Hi there – yes, something is going on here that’s draining your battery. Perhaps the pressure of the engine wash dislodged wiring which has shorted, or there was a chemical reaction to the cleaning solution that caused electrical damage in the alternator or voltage regulator. These componnents can be checked off of the vehicle. Vehicle wiring can be diagnosed by connecting an ammeter to the positive (red) battery cable, observe the current drain (likely less than 1 amp), then, one at a time, remove each fuse, check to see if the current drain has dropped to near 0, then reinsert the fuse. I have Chrysler 300c. Battery light came on, changed battery and alternator but power still getting drained and battery light still comes on.
ANSWER : Hi, thanks for writing in. This may be a sign of a failing starter relay. The starter relay is a small unit near the starter that directs power to the starter from the battery. When this fails, it may cause a clicking sound and will not allow the starter to engage the flywheel when you turn the key. I would suggest having a professional from YourMechanic come to your home to diagnose your starting issue to determine the solution to get you back on the road.

Dashboard lights out and something draining new battery
ANSWER : Hello there, thank you for asking about your 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air. Checking for parasitic draw on a battery can be done by inserting an ammeter in series with the negative battery cable, then removing the fuses one by one until the draw drops. Once this happens, you have found your problem circuit. A professional, such as one from YourMechanic, can [find the problematic fuse and replace it for you](https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/fuse-replacement].
