Passenger seat heater not working properly.

After depressing the button, the lights (on the button) turn off after a couple of seconds. The seat never heats up. It used to work. I looked in the owners manual to find the fuse. It says the right front seat fuse is in the passenger side dash fuse box and the left seat is in the trunk fuse box. It takes a 15/30 fuse. Does that mean 15-30 range or is that a actual fuse? Also when I checked the fuse boxes…there is no fuse in the passenger seat location (it worked before) and the drivers seat fuse is a 5 amp. Are both seats running off the driver seats fuse and it needs to be changed to 15/3
Experienced mechanics share their insights in answering this question :
Hello and thank you for contacting YourMechanic. The book says that you can use a 15, 20, 25, or 30 amp fuse. The power to the heaters are operated through the wiring to the main harness. There could have been a wire tied into it to make the seat work on the same circuit as the driver seat. This is common to find in the vehicles.

You can try putting a 15 amp fuse in the slot and see if the seat works. Try to avoid using a high amp fuse for if there is a problem with the heater you don’t want to burn it. If nothing seems to work, then the heater in the seat has failed and needs replaced.

If you need further assistance troubleshooting your vehicle, then seek out a technician, such as one from Your Mechanic, that can assist you with a seat inspection at your home or office. Best of luck.

How to Identify and Fix Common car Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced mechanics :

Some common causes of a heated seat not working include: Faulty fuse. Faulty heated seat power switch. Dirty or corroded seat plug.
There can be problems with heated car seats. If you use your heated seats too often, for too long, it may cause skin rashes, lesions, or burns. If you leave the seat on for too long, and it gets too hot or malfunctions, it could start a fire.
A heated seat repair cost can vary widely depending on the vehicle and exactly what`s wrong, but in general, it`s not inexpensive, primarily because of the time required to diagnose and repair the problem, which almost always involves removing the seat from the vehicle.
The temperature of a heated automobile seat is measured by a NTC thermistor that is embedded between the foam pads of the seat. The thermistor monitors the seats temperature and feeds this information back to the controller that regulates the seats temperature.
The average cost for a Seat Heater Replacement is between $558 and $593. Labor costs are estimated between $133 and $167 while parts are priced between $426 and $426.
Heated Seats Warm Up Very Quickly

It can take a while for a heater to warm up an entire vehicle. Heated seats simply need to warm up the seat itself, so you`ll begin to feel warm almost immediately — even if the interior of the car is still fairly cold.

Yes, they can. Temperatures on heated seats are supposed to max out on 113°F, but they`ve been observed to sometimes go all the way up to 150°F. Third degree burns can happen at just 120°F.
As the seat warms up, the thermistor value decreases and the sensing current increases. To make the seat get hotter, I cut into the circuit and added a fixed, non changing resistor inline with the thermistor. This shifts the entire temperature control behavior “up”.
Sometimes the heating element burns out so the whole system needs to be replaced. The heating element is attached to the upholstery so it is a big job that needs to be done by a professional.
The most common cause of a heated seat that does not work is a faulty seat heater element. The seat heater is also the most difficult component in the system to replace, since the seat must be removed and disassembled in order to access the heating elements.

Driver’s side seat heater not working
ANSWER : If the driver’s side heater is not working, but the passenger’s side heater is, then that may be a sign of a problem with the driver’s side blend door actuator. The blend door actuator is the electric motor that is responsible for switching the vents from blowing hot, to cold air, and vice versa. If the blend door actuator malfunctions, then the vents will be stuck in one position – either hot or cold. As the blend door actuator is an electrical component, and located inside the dashboard, I would recommend having a professional technician, such as one from YourMechanic, inspect your AC system, and then proceed with the appropriate repair.

2011 Chevrolet Camaro"Driver side power seat"…..Seat back won’t come up. Dealer says its over $4,000.
ANSWER : Without knowing what the actual problem is, it would be difficult to say which estimate is accurate. It is quite a price difference. The problem can be caused by a faulty electric motor, which may be a few hundred dollars to replace, or possible a broken seat frame or drive mechanism, which can cost much more One of our mobile technicians can come to you and check into why the seat is not working and give you a diagnosis and/or estimate for repairs.

I just replaced the front passenger window regulator and motor and it works but only when i am using the rear passenger switch
ANSWER : Your Audi uses a window control module to operate the windows. The switches send a command to the module, and the module sends the power to the window motors. I’ve seen the modules do some screwy things, especially when the battery voltage gets low, but I wouldn’t run out and buy a module just yet. It may be possible to communicate with it with the right software and there might be some re-set that can be done. If you contact Your Mechanic, they can send a technician to your home or office to check out your spooky windows and tell you whether you need a new module or something else.

What do I do if the passenger airbag indicator light is not responding properly to passengers in the front seat?
ANSWER : Sometimes, the sensors in the vehicle, that can tell whether the person riding in the passenger seat is an adult or an infant in a car seat, do not work properly. Sometimes these sensors can’t tell when there is anyone sitting in the passenger seat at all. If This happens, don’t worry. This is a simple problem to solve! Here’s how:

If a car seat meant to hold a small child is installed in the front passenger seat, the sensors in the seat should communicate this to the truck’s computer and the truck will not activate the airbags. The passenger airbag indicator light, located above the windshield, in front of the mirror, should read “Off”. If this light instead reads “On”, here’s what you can do:
One reason this may be happening involves the carseat itself. If the angle of the seat cushion and seatback is too narrow, the seatback will push the car seat into the cushion. Reclining the seat slightly may alleviate the problem.
If this doesn’t work, the vehicle should be turned off and the car seat removed. Re-install the car seat, being careful to make sure the seat isn’t wedged against the seat cushion. If the light is still in the “On” position after this, the truck may need to be serviced. It is not safe to carry a child in a car seat if the airbag is active.
If the passenger airbag indicator light is in the “Off” position when there is an adult seated in the passenger seat, then there are a few ways to get it to activate:
Make sure nothing is jammed into the seat (sweatshirt, blanket, etc.) or seat belt buckle.
If the light is still in the “Off” position, then turn the vehicle off and back on again with the passenger outside of the vehicle. When they once again take their seat, make sure the seatback is at a reasonable angle and that they are sitting with their feet on the floor. If this does not yield results, the truck may need servicing.

How do I properly secure a car seat in the front passenger seat?
ANSWER : The front passenger seat can safely hold a forward-facing car seat. The front passenger seat does have an airbag in front of it, but the airbag can either be manually turned off with the vehicle’s key via a switch in the glove compartment or, if there is not manual switch, the truck will sense whether or not a car seat is in the front passenger seat. Here’s how to install a child restraint, like a car seat or booster seat, into your vehicle:

Put the car seat on the center of the seat that you wish to secure it to and make sure it rests in a natural, level position.
Carefully read the manual to your car seat to ensure that you know how the seat belt should be properly looped through the child restraint and whether or not the seat needs to be tethered at the top to be secured.
Loop the lap and shoulder belts through the car seat and fasten the latch plate into the seat belt buckle. After it is secured, pull the shoulder belt all of the way out and then let it retract, as this will lock the belt in place. Push down on the car seat and pull on the shoulder bet to remove slack.
If the seat needs a top tether, then locate the top tether anchors either on the tops of the passenger seat or against the rear panel (regular cab only).

If using the seatback-mounted tether anchors, loop the tether(s) through both the tether anchor on the seat the car seat is secured into and the center tether anchor.
If using a tether anchor mounted onto the rear panel, then the tether needs to be uncovered and the tether(s) coming from the seat must not stretch over the headrest.

Tips

Do not install a car seat in the center passenger seat. This is dangerous as the center seats, if available, are not designed to secure a car seat.
Rear-facing car seats cannot be used in the front passenger seat. The airbag can be deactivated, but even the slight chance of it going off in a crash is too great. A child in a rear-facing seat during a crash is likely to suffer a broken neck or skull.
Shake the seat around once it is installed to ensure that it is secure. If it moves more than an inch in any direction, tighten the seat belt or re-install the car seat.

Heater / A/C are not working properly. They are weak and the highest and lowest settings do not work at all. Any ideas what it could be?
ANSWER : Hi there. Check the power from the switch on each setting and to the blower. See what the voltage is at each setting. If the voltage is low or not showing, then the switch is not working and needs replaced. The switch has a resister built in it to make the blower have different voltage outputs which makes the blower have multiple speeds. However, the first setting and the last setting could have a burned element inside making only the second and third setting work. Once you have the blower working properly, if there is no heat, then check the heater control valve in the engine compartment for if the vacuum line has came off or if the valve is not working. When the engine is at operating temperature, check the temperature of the coolant hoses to the valve and after the valve. If the hoses are the same temperature and the valve is shut, then the valve is on or not working. If the temperatures are different, then the valve is off or not working. If you need further assistance with your heater and a/c not working, then seek out a professional, such as one from Your Mechanic, to help you.

Water under passenger seat and mildew problem
ANSWER : If the A/C evaporator drain is clogged or partly clogged, then the water condensation from the normal A/C operation cannot drain out of the evaporator case and has to go somewhere. The place it usually goes is out of is the floor vents. Have the A/C evaporator drain checked and cleaned out. Try to not park under trees that shed the leaves and seeds in the future. This is what clogs the drain. As for the mildew, there are several methods listed in this article for maintaining car upholstery after liquid damage.
