Loud clicking sound coming from where the serpentine belt is when car is running

Loud clicking sounds coming from the serpentine belt pulleys or engine when the car is running. Not sure what is wrong with it.

My car has 199000 miles.
My car has an automatic transmission.

Experienced mechanics share their insights in answering this question :
Hi there. In most cases, this type of clicking sound is caused by a belt that is slightly frayed and hitting a shield or other mechanical component. It’s also common for a worn out pulley or idler tension pulley to cause a clicking sound as the belt spins. If the sound increases as the vehicle RPM’s increase, then it’s likely with the belt or pulley itself. It would be a good idea to have a professional mechanic come to your location to complete a car is making a noise inspection, so they can isolate the source of this noise and recommend the right replacement.

How to Identify and Fix Common car Problems ?

In most cases, this type of clicking sound is caused by a belt that is slightly frayed and hitting a shield or other mechanical component. It`s also common for a worn out pulley or idler tension pulley to cause a clicking sound as the belt spins.
If the belt becomes stretched out, the tensioner isn`t working properly, or one of the pulleys becomes bent out of shape, you can hear rattling, clicking and slapping noises that might be mistaken for engine knock.
Grinding or squeaking noise from the belts or tensioner

The most common symptom of a bad or failing drive belt tensioner is noise from the belts or tensioner. If the tensioner is loose the belts may squeak or squeal, especially when the engine is first started.

If you`re hearing a heater clicking noise in the car or clicking noise coming from deep within your dash, the problem is likely the blend door actuator. The actuators are either not positioned correctly, the gear may be stripped, or the actuator may be broken.
You may not believe this but the knocking sound you hear coming from your car`s engine could actually be the accessory belt. JTR Repair advises that when this belt gets too loose, it can make knocking noises as it makes contact with the engine. Tightening the belt will alleviate the knocking sound.
Rough Idle: The crankshaft pulley is subjected to a high level of stress as the engine is idling. A bad crankshaft pulley can make the engine idle rough. If you notice that the engine is idling unevenly, but you don`t feel any misfires or combustion problems you should probably check the crankshaft pulley.
If the serpentine belt breaks, the alternator stops generating electrical power. If that happens, your headlights will dim, the radio won`t work, and the battery will die. The battery warning light will also turn on because your battery isn`t being charged.
Heat and friction of normal use slowly wear down the belt before it breaks. You know it`s time to have your belt inspected and replaced when the squealing noise gets louder and louder each trip you take.

ANSWER : If the battery is weak and the voltage is dropping to below 9 volts you will get the clicking without the starter turning the motor. Have the battery voltage checked and if battery cannot hold a load then replace it and clean the battery terminals and recheck system to see if it starts.

My car will start up and run fine until reaches normal temperature and be hearing clicking from kick pannel and car shuts off
ANSWER : Some model Hondas have the engine ECU in the location you described. Now that doesn’t mean you need an ECU, ECU failures are actually pretty rare. But it could be a clue.
Many electrical component failures occur at a certain temperature. A weak solder joint may expand and a circuit board lose the connection when the temperature rises. This kind of thing happens most often in fuel pump relays and power relays. Those would be the things that I would take a hard look at in your case. If you contact Your Mechanic they can send a technician to your home or office to check out your stalling Honda and let you know just what it will take to solve your problem.

Power steering loss, no belts are turning but the car is running fine. I also have a soft pedal. Whats wrong with my car?
ANSWER : I have only seen this situation once in my 30+ years and it turned out to be a broken crankshaft pulley. Belts are driven by the engine. The crankshaft pulley spins the belts, which in turn spin the air conditioner compressor, power steering and water pumps, and the alternator. The vehicle should be towed to your local repair shop and not driven. Without the water pump spinning to circulate the coolant, the engine will quickly overheat and result in more extensive damage.

Car sounds like golf cart when revving and braking; also leaking fluid; sound fades as car warms up
ANSWER : Hello,
There are a number of things that could make an engine noisy when starting up. Depending on the specific type of sound you are referring to, this will determine how to properly diagnose. If there is a bit of a hissing sound, this may be a sign of a vacuum leak. If this is more of a shrieking sound, this may be a sign of a worn out or out of adjustment serpentine belt. If there is a bit of a howling or growling sound, this may be a sign of a worn out or low on fluid power steering pump. A rattling or pinging sound may be caused by an ignition problem. An engine can ping (or knock) due to an improper combustion process. A "spark knock" is the result of combustion occurring too early. Early combustion can occur from carbon buildup inside the combustion chamber, a lean air/fuel mixture, and advanced ignition timing (spark plug firing too soon). A clattering type sound may be a result of improper lubrication in the valve train which could be a more serious problem and should be addressed as soon as possible. I would suggest having an expert from YourMechanic come to your location to diagnose and inspect your vehicle to ensure everything is in proper working order.

Metallic click sound when putting car in drive or reverse from park, and another click (sometimes) when making a turn.
ANSWER : You may have damaged the axle or strut. I would have the entire front inspected and have the clicking diagnosed. When anyone hits something hard enough to pop a tire there is most likely damage to some component in the area where it was hit. A visual inspection may or may not identify the problem, but a good mechanic can road test and hear the sound and should be able to pinpoint the cause of the clicking noise and recommend a repair.

A few days after replacing serpentine belt the car will not move when in drive
ANSWER : This would suggest that you may have a charging system problem as well as the car potentially being in limp mode. When the car goes into limp mode this is a measure the car’s computer takes in an effort to keep you and the car safe when one or more critical components is not working properly. When this happens you should have a Check Engine Light on which will register fault codes in the car’s computer which will point to specific components. I would recommend having an certified expert, like one from YourMechanic, come to your home to diagnose your starting issue and help you repair it.

When I turn on my AC the radiator fans do not turn on. The fans do come on when the car warms up so I know they are working and the fuses are good. The AC compressor does come on and the air blows ice cold when the car is moving. Car is a 2006 Chrysler Sebring Sedan 2.7l v6.
ANSWER : The control circuit for the fans needs to be checked. For example, there is usually a condenser fan relay in the A/C electrical controls. There could be a fault with that relay and/or wiring problems, perhaps even just a loose connection, blown or loose fuse, and so forth. To resolve something like this, the recommended service is an electrical component diagnostic. If you request that diagnostic service, the responding certified mechanic will get the problem pinpointed and resolved. If you have further questions or concerns, do not hesitate to re-contact YourMechanic as we are always here to help you.
