I just got my 99 BMW 528i back had a transmission put in was running fine but out of nowhere when I put it in gear it’s stallin

Just got my car back. Had a transmission put it. Was running fine until yesterday when I put it in gear it's stalling I put in octane booster because it was sitting for like 4 months so figured bad gas runs when it's idle but stalls when in gear

My car has 217000 miles.
My car has an automatic transmission.

Experienced mechanics share their insights in answering this question :
Stalling can be caused by a number of issues. A vacuum leak can be a cause. If during the repairs, a vacuum line was left loose or the air intake tube was cracked/damaged. Too much air can effect the air / fuel mixture and when the idle drops when shifting out of park, the engine can stall. Other components such as the idle air control valve and throttle position sensor can cause the same issue. Even if a fault code is not present for either, they can be slow or lag in their response. If they lag enough, the engine can stall before they can compensate for the idle drop when shifting out of Park. With the proper scan tools, a certified technician can look into the stalling to determine if fault codes are present or if any of the sensors are not responding correctly. A simple code reader does not give you actual sensor values.

How to Identify and Fix Common car Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced mechanics :

The most common reason your BMW won`t shift gear is that the transmission fluid level is lower than recommended. Even if you add transmission fluid regularly, the low fluid level could be caused by a leak.
The “Transmission Malfunction” light will come on when the car suspects there to be a problem with the transmission. Your car will typically put the car into “limp mode” when this light comes on. This “Limp Mode” limits the car in speed in an attempt to save the transmission from further damage.
Turn off your vehicle`s ignition and wait patiently for 5 to 10 seconds. Start the engine and allow it to idle for several seconds. Switch off the ignition and wait patiently for another 30 to 40 seconds. Repeat these steps 2 to 3 times in order to reset your vehicle`s transmission control module.
One reason why an automatic transmission isn`t shifting into gear has to do with the fluid. If it`s not at the right level or the incorrect type has been used, then it`ll affect the gears. Another big reason has to do with the ECM possibly going bad.
If you start to hear whining, humming, or clunking noises under your BMW, it could be a sign of transmission trouble. These noises could stem from the fact that the transmission fluid is breaking down. The fluid is designed to lubricate the transmission`s components and keep them cool.
Often sluggish and reluctant shifts are due to debris buildup between the shift housing and the shift cable, kinks in the cable and/or housing, or worn out housing. As above, make sure your derailleur, hanger, and cassette are tight, and your wheel is properly seated and tight.
How to get your car out of limp mode. You may be able to reset the car by switching it off and on again after about 30 seconds. If the warning lights disappear and the car behaves normally, then it may have just been a temporary glitch.

Carrying out reset and relearn is important to prevent transmissions failure because the oil is replaced.

Everytime I put car into gear it shuts off the car but idles fine
ANSWER : This sounds like a faulty speed sensor problem. Most cars have two speed sensors (one monitors input shaft and one monitors output shaft) which tell the computer what the gear ratio is of the transmission while in use. If either of these are not working properly, they will cause the computer to shut the car off for safety reasons. I would suggest having an expert from YourMechanic come to your home to diagnose your stalling issuee and help you repair it.

My manual car won’t go into gear, it turns on and the clutch goes down perfectly fine. It happened after my gears grinded, the car
ANSWER : If the clutch mechanism is releasing properly, and the shift linkage is not malfunctioning, your transmission will have to be removed from the vehicle and inspected. Once a transmission has been removed from a vehicle, if the problem is a broken or worn part or parts, and the transmission has 100,000 miles or more, the most cost effective approach is to just simply rebuild the whole transmission. There are transmission rebuild kits that are sold just for this purpose. Rebuilding a transmission is no big deal and is indeed easier in many respects than rebuilding an engine. You can rebuild your transmission right in your own garage. You can NOT rebuild an engine in your own garage due to the highly specialized, and extremely costly, machine shop equipment required. Occasionally, mobile mechanics will take on a transmission rebuild job especially as once the mechanic removes the transmission from the vehicle, it is just simply a modular unit that can be easily transported to a mechanic’s shop and rebuilt right there and then returned to your vehicle. Engine stalls when put into gear
ANSWER : Hello. Engine stalling can be caused by a wide variety of issues. Anything from transmission issues, fuel problems, to wiring problems can all cause an engine to stall when put into gear. If you recently rebuilt the transmission it may be possible that the issue is related to the service. As you stated, it may be possible that the torque converter is locking up for some reason, perhaps due to a mechanical issue or a fluid pressure issue. It may also be possible that the stalling is being caused by issues with the engine management system. Perhaps an issue with one of the components, such as the fuel pump or idle air control valve is causing the vehicle to stall out when put under load. I would start by trying to determine if the stalling is transmission or engine management related and go from there. If the check engine light is illuminated, scanning for trouble codes will likely reveal some insight into what the problem may be. As these sorts of engine management issues can sometimes be difficult to diagnose, I would recommend having a professional technician, such as one from YourMechanic, come to your location to diagnose what may be causing your stalling.

Second gear misshifts when I drive, all other gears are fine.
ANSWER : Hello.

A transmission coming out of gear is most often caused by worn transmission components. It may be possible that the synchronizer rings, which are meant to smoothly mesh the gears inside of the transmission, have worn out and are no longer able to stay in gear.

It may also be possible that the gears themselves have worn out, and can no longer hold the torque of the engine. This is usually preceded or accompanied by a grinding noise when attempting to shift into that gear. If this is the case, it may be possible that the transmission may need to be rebuilt.

As transmission rebuilds can be expensive, I would recommend having the vehicle diagnosed by a professional technician who specializes in transmission, to determine if a rebuild is required.

Put my GMC into gear and when I give it gas it just wines and won’t move.
ANSWER : Hi there. Check the clutch to see if it is slipping. When a clutch slips, the engine will continue to operate but the transmission will not drive under a load. If the clutch is new and the noise is still present, then there is an issue with the transmission internally and needs checked for damage. I recommend seeking out a professional, such as one from Your Mechanic, to help you diagnose your transmission and clutch.

I just got a new transmission put in my car and it drives and reverse but won’t go up hill.
ANSWER : This may be a sign of a faulty transmission control solenoid. As you know, automatic transmissions use pressurized hydraulic fluid to change gears. Every time a gear change is required, the car’s computer activates a transmission solenoid, which directs transmission fluid into the valve body to engage the correct gear. When this is faulty or not working properly, this can cause a delay in gear shifting or in some cases cause the car to not shift at all. I would recommend having an expert from YourMechanic come to your location to take the car for a test drive to more specifically determine the cause for this.

have a 98′ Honda Civic Dx with manual transmission that’s got some sort of issue. Most of the time it runs just fine, but randoml
ANSWER : Hello, thank you for writing in. Although the parts you have replaced are the key components, you are going to be more worried about the air intake, throttle, and idle air control valves. The idle air control valve keeps the engine running properly when you decrease speed and are at a stop. You may want to start with it, and then look to your throttle and throttle position sensor. Make sure they are not clogged or sticking from debris and build up. With a new air filter, you should have already checked it housing for any clogs or restrictions.
