Hood cable broke and hood won’t open

Our car’s hood cable broke and I can’t open it now. The shop told me to purchase the original part. The guy that helped me opened the hood within a minute with a flat screwdriver. I have to wait on purchasing an original part. The problem is that I need to check the brake fluid. I need to know how that guy opened the hood with the screwdriver. I’ve been trying to do it, but just can’t seem to. There is a gap of ½ inch between the grill and the hood where I can stick the screwdriver, but I just can’t figure out which latch to push up. Can you direct me on how to do this?
Experienced mechanics share their insights in answering this question :
Hello. There is a spring loaded latch that the cable pulls on so you should grab a flashlight and a screwdriver like the one you saw him use and look for where the spring is. The lever needs to be pushed towards the drivers side of the car. If you play with it a little bit, you’ll get it. Keep in mind it’s spring loaded so it will require a little force. There are multiple videos that show the process if you still cannot get it to release.

If you need to open the hood with a stuck latch on your xA, simply pull up on the hood and it should pop up for you to release the second latch. Another option is to pull the interior hood release, then bang on the hood to see if that pops it open.
Go to the front of your vehicle and locate the secondary release lever under the front of the hood on the left-hand side. Release the hood latch by pushing the secondary release lever toward the center of your vehicle.
A hood with a broken latch could be a safety hazard since it is possible it`s not securely closed. And in this condition, it`s possible for the hood to suddenly release while you are driving, obscuring your view of the road.
Under the hood of most cars, trucks, vans and even tractors is a latch. Known as a hood latch, it temporarily holds the hood down. Hood latches are connected to a handle. When you pull or engage the handle, the hood latch will release.
You`re right; eventually, the cable will stretch or break, and you`ll just have to sell the car. Of course, I jest. Actually, this is a common complaint, and it`s almost always caused by a dirty, under-lubricated or rusty hood-latch mechanism.
Also called hood lift supports, the hood struts act as a prop rod to hold the hood up when fully extended.

If the hood was having a problem closing and won’t open now, it’s typically an indicator that the hood latch itself is damaged or simply needs to be lubricated. ANSWER : Hi there. It is possible that the problem with your doors is electrical, however, there are multiple individual components that make up the electric door locks, ranging from solenoids, to relays, fuses, control module and the door lock itself. Before receiving a price quote on what it would cost to fix it, it would first require an inspection to properly diagnose what is damaged and needs to be fixed. I would recommend having one of our professional mobile mechanics come to your location and complete a door will not open inspection first, so they can pinpoint the source of your issue and recommend the right repairs.

My shifter cable bushing broke can you fix this with out changing the cable?

ANSWER : Hi Rachel. Thanks for contacting YourMechanic.com about the door problems that your BMW and Volvo are experiencing. Our process for completing repairs is a bit different than most garages, dealerships or repair centers. Since we are mobile, the first thing we suggest is setting up an inspection to determine what exactly is damaged and causing the problem. On most cars, trucks and SUV’s sold today, there are more five individual components and systems that must all work together – just to open a door. Knowing what item is broken and requires replacement is the best way to ensure the repair is done efficiently and you save money. Since there are two different cars, with two different door issues, it would be best for you to set up a door will not open inspection first; which will allow us to diagnose each component failure, secure the right replacement parts and complete the repairs for you at your location.

The cable for my hood release broke on the end that’s connected under the hood.

The hole grill and lights assembly will come off together. If you need further assistance with removing the hood latch, then seek out a professional, such as one from Your Mechanic, to help you.

hood won’t open
ANSWER : The cable is stretched, this happens over time. What you will have to do is have an assistant pull the release handle from inside the keep while you gently bump the hood at its edge with your hand. Make a fist and gently bump it near the latch and see if it pops up. If this doesn’t work, try pulling up on the hood while the assistant is pulling the release handle.

Once the hood is up, lube the latch and see if you can loosen the latch and fit it in a position where there is less tension on it so the cable won’t have to work as hard to release it.
