changing timing belt on 10 year old car with 52k miles, not required till 102 k but decade old belt= bad?

The recommendation to change timing belt is 102k miles, i'm only at 52k. But the car is 10 years old, do timing belts get brittle with age, especially in texas heat? Or are the belts very resilient and should be ok? It is an interference engine, so if the belt goes, so does my engine?

My car has 52000 miles.
My car has an automatic transmission.

Experienced mechanics share their insights in answering this question :
My suggestion would be to take a close look at the belt for microscopic cracks or signs of deterioration. If anything is noted, I would spend the money and replace it as this is a relatively cheap "insurance policy" against the possibility of failure resulting in thousands of dollars of potential damage should it fail. As you know, with this generation of interference engines, a broken belt can cause a nightmare of damage. If you would like to replace your timing belt, a certified technician from YourMechanic can come to your home or office to perform this service.

How to Identify and Fix Common car Problems ?

It`ll usually need to be replaced more than once over the course of a vehicle`s lifetime. Manufacturers will usually recommend to replace your timing belt after a set number of years or miles. This could be anywhere from 40,000 to 100,000 miles or 4+ years.
Seven years is the maximum life of the timing belt recommended by most manufacturers. For example, the belt should be replaced even if the engine has only 30,000 miles but is seven years of age. More timing belts break due to age than mileage.
If you have a 4-cylinder model from 2003-2007, you engine has a timing chain; if you have the V6 model from those years, it`s a timing belt. An Accord from 2008-2012 with a 4-cylinder engine will have a timing chain, whereas the V6 engine models have a timing belt.
To keep your Magnum running right, you must pay attention to the Dodge Magnum timing belt. This part is essential to your engine functioning properly.
Will a timing belt last 10 years? Most manufacturers recommend replacing the cambelt every 60,000 to 100,000 miles or every 5-7 years, whichever comes first.
It is safer to replace the timing belt even earlier than the manufacturer recommends. In general, however, timing belts needs to be replaced from 60,000 miles up to 150,000 miles.
The recommended replacement according to mileage ranges from 60,000 miles to 150,000 miles. If your vehicle is 6 to 10 years old, it is recommended to replace the timing belt.
Timing belt replacement varies from car to car. It can vary from 50,000 to 70,000 miles. Some cars, it may be a higher mileage. But, 300,000 miles, does not seem possible at all.
2007 has a `timing chain` instead of the belt .. No service is required .. However the serpentine – accessory drive belt that you can see on the front of the engine is a different story!
It can be difficult to tell if your timing belt is worn out. Your car`s timing belt is sealed in its own housing, which makes it extremely difficult to check on your own. Timing belts should be left to expert mechanics who have experience dealing with them.
The recommended replacement according to mileage ranges from 60,000 miles to 150,000 miles. If your vehicle is 6 to 10 years old, it is recommended to replace the timing belt.
As we mentioned earlier, most timing belts tend to wear down somewhere between 60,000 and 100,000 miles. You can check your owner`s manual or Volkswagen maintenance schedule for more specific replacement intervals.
Although timing belts are critical, there`s no need to replace them regularly –unless explicitly recommended in your owner`s manual. Some automakers recommend changing a timing belt between 60,000 and 100,000, others don`t. Many of today`s timing belts can go 100,000 miles or more without needing to be replaced.

Can you change the defected water pump without changing its defected belt (which is the drive belt and only belt in this model of
ANSWER : Hello. Yes you can replace the water pump without replacing the serpentine belt. If the belt is worn, and it breaks while you are driving, you can damage a lot of other components in that area. Typically the price of a serpentine belt is relatively inexpensive. You will have to remove the belt to replace the water pump anyway. Since you are likely going to have to purchase a new pump, we do recommend that you purchase a belt at the same time. You SHOULD replace the belt if it is worn, and this is a perfect time to do it. It is not necessarily required, but you are putting yourself at risk of another break down at a later time. Not to mention if the belt is already worn, manipulating off and back onto the vehicle while changing the water pump can further damage it, and shorten the amount of time its got left. Belts should be replaced before they break, as to the amount of damage they can cause when they do break. Again, you may be able to get away with not replacing the belt right now, but if its as worn as you say, its going to break sooner than later and should be replaced.

My timing belt snapped about a year ago , car been sitting for about a year , just recently got the motivation to change the belt
ANSWER : Having the timing belt off by one tooth is enough to cause problems. I suggest having a certified technician, like one from YourMechanic, determine the exact cause of your starting issue and to make sure that you have no further engine damage.

Replaced alternator on car 2 times each time shows it’s charging 14v let car run for a little bit then test drive and car voltage
ANSWER : There are reports that the replacement alternators will not communicate with the engine computer and will not charge correctly. I recommend using only the manufacturer approved replacement part. It can be new or remanufactured but approved for use in the vehicle. Some lower cost alternators on the aftermarket will have charging problems since they will not communicate with the ECM on the vehicle and will stop charging.

Timing belt is tight and yet appears to be slipping several teeth when belt is rotated,
ANSWER : This is okay since there are more notches on the belt than the amount on the sprockets. Once you aligned the first time the belt marks will almost never line up perfectly again. The marks are used to put the belt on correctly. They aren’t used as an indicator after the engine is turned again. You should be okay to start the motor as long as timing marks on pulleys line up. If you run into any issues, have a certified technician, like one from YourMechanic, assist you with the replacement of the timing belt.

1992 Acura Legend, when the timing belt goes, is it common for the valves to bend?
ANSWER : If the timing belt break off, the engine’s pistons will hit the valves as the pistons are moving. The engine is an interference engine and can cause damage to the internals of the engine. The last time the belt came off, the engine may have been running at an idle or not under power. It is possible for the valves to be bent. What I recommend doing is performing a leak down test on the engine with a timing belt on the engine and properly timed to determine if the valves were in fact bent. If all of the cylinders have a 80 percent hold and not leaking, then the engine is fine. If there is a mass leak on a cylinder, then the piston did some internal damage. I recommend seeking out a professional, such as one from Your Mechanic, to help you check your engine’s valve train with a leak down tester.

Serpentine belt tearing apart by pebble & pieces of it getting inside timing belt, motor destroyed
ANSWER : Hi there. I agree with you – this doesn’t pass the ’smell test’. The only way for debris to enter the engine is through the throttle body. Since the throttle body inlet is protected and covered by an air intake on your Ford Fiesta, I highly doubt that this is the source of your problems.

I have a loss of power when acceleration the car does not drive pass 10 or 15mph I change the plugs and also change the fuel filte
ANSWER : This may be result of a failing or dirty mass airflow sensor. This is a unit that is responsible for regulating the air flow into the engine as it is mixed with fuel prior to being injected into the motor. When this is not working properly, this will cause an imbalanced air/fuel mixture resulting in a stalling or surging in the vehicle’s performance. The knocking sound may also be a result of the struggling acceleration which is common when the engine struggles to develop power. I would suggest having an expert from YourMechanic come to your home to take a look at your vehicle, and possibly replace your mass airflow sensor at your earliest convenience.
