Every time i fill up my gas tank. My jeep patriots shuts down. Once i turn it back on i have to be pressing on the gas for about a minute and after that my jeep works fine.. i also have a check engine light

My car has 80000 miles.
My car has an automatic transmission.

Experienced mechanics share their insights in answering this question :
The most common problem is the vapor purge valve leaking vapor from the gas tank to the engine when it should be closed. The Check Engine Light is most likely on for a fuel tank vapor leak code. You should have the vent valve checked and replaced if it is leaking. This should correct the problem you are having. If you want to have this verified, a technician from YourMechanic can come to your home or office to inspect your Check Engine Light and let you know exactly what needs to be repaired.

How to Identify and Fix Common car Problems ?

Basically, the gas is coming out of the gas pump at a pressure that is too fast for the car to take in. If the air vapors do not get out fast enough and the tube gets covered by gasoline, a vacuum forms inside the nozzle which will automatically switch off the flow of gas into your tank.
The most common reasons a Jeep Patriot engine stalling are the fuel system, the air intake system, or the ignition system. Search our network of RepairPal Certified shops near you to speak with a technician about your issue.
An engine that is hesitating to accelerate is most likely dealing with a fuel/air mixture that is too lean. Engine`s that are running inefficiently will begin to show signs like hesitation which will only become worse over time.
If the vehicle randomly shuts off while driving or stationary, there is usually an issue with the engine. Typical patterns here are issues with the ignition system, mixture preparation or fuel. A known error here is that the vehicle was refueled with the wrong type of fuel.
Cars shouldn`t shut off while driving, but when they do, the most common culprits are: A bad crankshaft position sensor. Other sensor issues in the engine. A faulty fuel system.
Common Jeep Patriot Problems

Despite its above-average reliability scores, the Patriot had some glaring issues, including: Premature CVT failure – The Patriot`s continuously variable transmission is prone to failure. Drivers experienced symptoms like acceleration issues, overheating warnings, and whining noises.

Fuel injectors may become dirty over time and not be able to provide as much fuel to the cylinder as is needed. Dirty fuel injectors may cause the engine to run lean which will in turn, cause hesitation when accelerating.
An indication that a vehicle is not receiving the right mixture of air and fuel is if the vehicle jerks or surges forward at high speed. Several components of the fuel or air intake system could cause this jerking or surging sensation to happen. Issues within these systems can also cause fuel economy to worsen.
Defective Fuel Pump: The fuel pump pulls the fuel from the gas tank to the engine via the fuel lines. If the pump stops working, malfunctions, or becomes clogged, it will not supply enough fuel to the injectors. This can cause the vehicle to accelerate slowly, or even sputter and stall, especially at high speeds.
If the engine runs fine when you are holding the accelerator pedal down and dies when you release it then you may have a couple of possible issues. I would first check the vacuum hoses going to the engine. If any of them are loose or leaking, this will occur. If they are fine then the throttle body should be cleaned.

When refilling gas tank, gas overflows before tank is full.
ANSWER : The most common cause of this type of problem is when the fuel filler neck’s inner tube comes off of the neck itself. You will need to have the filler neck removed to check to see if the inner tube was knocked off from someone trying to get fuel out of tank with a siphon hose and managed to knock the hose off. This causes the tank to not get filled properly and the inner hose can get caught in the fuel sender causing wrong readings.

If you’d like to get this fixed, consider YourMechanic, as a certified technician can help you service your fuel filler neck and ensure that your fuel gauge functions normally. Good luck.

My car will be starting perfect and when the gas tank gets lower it will start having problems .
ANSWER : Based on the information you gave, it sounds like a possible fuel starvation issue, caused by a partially blocked, in-tank fuel filter or a crack in the fuel pump housing. The remedy would be to replace the fuel pump assembly and filter. The overheating may be caused by several things, including a stuck thermostat, faulty water pump, or even a cracked head gasket. I suggest having a certified technician, like one from YourMechanic, inspect the relevant systems to pinpoint the cause of your vehicle’s hard starting issue and overheating problem.

My car shuts off while driving and then turns back on multiple times or shuts off after driving and car turns off.
ANSWER : Hi there. Check the alternator and make sure that the wiring it connected tight. Check the battery cables and make sure that they are tight and clean. Look for any loose ground wires to the chassis on the vehicle. If everything checks out to be working correctly, then the PCM may need to be replaced as it may have a battery disconnect condition. ANSWER : Hi there. There are dozens of problems that can lead to a drop in gas mileage, some of them are serious and some can be easily corrected. Here are some of the more common issues that can affect the fuel efficiency of most cars.On newer cars like your Sonic however, unless you’re driving more than 300 miles per day, you shouldn’t have to fill the fuel tank daily. Since the dealership has attempted to resolve this issue, you might want to have an independent professional mobile mechanic complete a car is getting worse gas mileage inspection to see if they can find the source of this issue.

The car has trouble starting after gas tank is filled up
ANSWER : When you fill your gas tank, a lot of fumes build up in the fuel tank and usually excess fumes come out of the fuel filled tube and out to atmosphere or into a recovery system in the fuel pump handle.

You may have a purge valve that is not sealing correctly and the fumes are going into your engine causing your engine to be flooded with fumes while you are refueling. You can help your car start by holding the throttle wide open to get extra air into the engine to get it started, and then letting off the gas once it starts. This is only a way to get it started after refueling until you get the purge valve replaced to fix the problem. If the problem persists, have a mechanic, such as one from YourMechanic, diagnose your car’s hard starting problem to verify what needs to be done.

Hi. A few days ago I purchased some gas. I filled the tank. Immediately upon restarting the car the engine sputtered and choked.
ANSWER : Hi, thanks for writing in. I believe that that bad gas may very well have caused this issue. My first recommendation would be to have all the fuel drained out and the fuel pump relay removed. Then crank the engine until the fuel pressure is relieved. Then the fuel should be removed from the lines. Once this is done, the fuel tank can be refilled with quality fuel as well as some fuel injector cleaner. Once this step is complete, the engine should start back up. If the engine does not start back up, the purge valve may require replacement in order to resolve this issue. I would also recommend choosing a different fuel station for a while to prevent this issue from happening again. Hope this helps, best of luck!

I filled my car up with gas, drove about a block to get a newspaper, put it in park and it died before i ever got out of the car .
ANSWER : With a car that cranks but won’t start, there are a few things that need to be checked. But before I explain them, there is a common thing that happens with Nissan’s. Every once in awhile they will flood the cylinders with fuel and wash the oil film off the cylinder walls and rings. This will reduce compression enough that the car will not start. Fortunately, there is an easy fix for this problem. It is what is known as clear flooding.

Hold the gas pedal all the way to the floor while cranking the motor. It won’t start immediately and when it does it will not run very well at first. Feather the throttle to keep it running until the motor clears out the excess fuel and the motor begins to run smoothly. If after cranking the motor with the gas pedal held to the floor for at least
