I have to fill gas tank everyday due to car using alot of fuel

my car has been using an extreme amount of fuel the past few weeks. I am having to fill the tank everyday it seems like. it's a small car that is supposed to get great gas mileage but clearly isnt. I tried changing the air filter and that didn't work. I had a Chevy dealership close to me fix the purge solenoid valve because apparently the fuel trim level was at 22%. they said they fixed it and brought it down to 7%, but the car is still using an extreme amount of fuel for as small of a car as it is. what could be wrong?

My car has 47000 miles.
My car has an automatic transmission.

Experienced mechanics share their insights in answering this question :
Hi there. There are dozens of problems that can lead to a drop in gas mileage, some of them are serious and some can be easily corrected. Here are some of the more common issues that can affect the fuel efficiency of most cars.On newer cars like your Sonic however, unless you’re driving more than 300 miles per day, you shouldn’t have to fill the fuel tank daily. Since the dealership has attempted to resolve this issue, you might want to have an independent professional mobile mechanic complete a car is getting worse gas mileage inspection to see if they can find the source of this issue.

How to Identify and Fix Common car Problems ?

Bad oxygen sensors and air filters can reduce gas mileage by as much as 20%! It`s a must to help keep oxygen sensors with a proper mix of air and fuel so they can perform optimally. Dirty air filters, clogged with sand and debris, simply need to be replaced so that the engine can perform at its peak.
This bad habit is threefold – driving too fast, accelerating too quickly, and stopping too suddenly. All three of these actions lead to high fuel consumption. Where possible, you should accelerate slowly and drive with the speed of traffic.
However, keeping drivers tanks full reduces the space for condensation to form, so you are less likely to have issues with water in the fuel tank. A full tank of fuel weighs more, driving round with additional weight in a car or van will reduce fuel economy.
Help avoid an emergency. Having a full tank of gas prevents you from being stranded or getting stuck in an accident or traffic jam without a means to keep your vehicle running. You can also avoid having to call a tow truck or roadside assistance.
The fuel sending unit is not accurate and is empty at 1/4 of a tank, or you have a fuel pump that has a faulty bottom screen which has come off and sucks air below a 1/4 tank. A big problem that these vehicles have is the plastic fuel tank.
Many of the main causes for poor gas mileage are mechanical and include things like improper air flow, faulty injectors or bad oxygen sensors. “Your vehicle needs both fuel and air to give the best fuel mileage,” says Nicole Miskelley, manager at PMR Auto & Diesel Repair in Marion, Illinois.
Less petrol in the tank means more evaporation (in theory)

The basic thinking behind it is that when the fuel tank is half full, there is more air in the tank which means the fuel evaporates faster. The quicker it runs out, the more trips you will need to make to keep filling up.

As you drive, you use up some fuel, and hence carry less weight in the car. When you have used half a tank your fuel efficiency is now roughly 8.08L/100km: the car is travelling more efficiently than it was with a full tank.
Experts say you should keep your gas tank at least a quarter full at all times.
How do you know when your gas tank is full? If you`re planning to fill your fuel tank all the way, you will know the tank is full when you hear a sound indicating that the valve shut off. At this point, you will no longer be able to fill your tank any further.
A four-cylinder car holds approximately 14–15 gallons of gas.
Some people might consider switching to a high mileage oil at 200,000 miles, while others may want to change to a high mileage oil at 80,000 miles. For the average driver, anything over 100,000 miles could safely be considered a high mileage vehicle.
Too Much Fuel

Most commonly a result of improper starting, “flooding” results from various causes, including over-priming, closed choke, stuck valve, gummed carburetor, or immediately trying to restart an automatic choke engine. The easiest way to tell if your engine is flooded with gas is to remove the spark plug.

ANSWER : The switch you are referring to is vended with the required electrical and fuel schematic (I just looked in the box) that answers your installation question. If you want an advance view, here is a link as well. Yes, you need a return line and just refer to the aforementioned link. If you are retrofitting back to OEM, I strongly encourage you to buy the original Factory Service Manual (FSM). There are lots of details attending this system and obviously it is difficult to recount it all here. The FSM will make your life much easier and you can then make sure your installation is perfect. Alternatively, YourMechanic can dispatch a certified mechanic and perform the whole retrofit and check out if you desire. Just request and schedule a generic service such as fuel pump service and the mechanic will come to your location and estimate the parts and labor required. If you have further questions or concerns, do not hesitate to re-contact YourMechanic as we are always here to help you.

Just had cluster replaced on a 2005 Ford freestyle. Filled up tank and a day later was driving car fuel tank light came on
ANSWER : Hi there. The only mechanical item that might cause the fuel gauge to act this way would be some malfunction within the EVAP vent solenoid system. However, if this occurred right after replacing the instrument cluster, it’s more likely due to an electrical fault that occurred during the installation. I would contact the company or mechanic that completed the instrument cluster installation to ask them if they can take a look at this issue, as it is likely an installation fault and not mechanical.

Full fuel tank the car uses about 2 gallons of gas then quits?
ANSWER : If your fuel pump stops pumping fuel when you only use two gallons then you need to remove the fuel pump from the tank to verify the fuel tank is full except the two gallons used. If tank is still full then your fuel pump is leaking on the assembly and begins sucking in air. Inspect the fuel module and replace it if it is damaged and leaking. If the fuel tank is real low on fuel then replace the fuel sending unit so it indicates the correct amount of fuel.

1996 F150 4.9 5 speed. Frt. Fuel pump quit working. Put fuel in rear tank and it sucked the fuel to the frt tank.
ANSWER : The two tanks are designed to work together and so BOTH pumps must be functioning and, as well, the related fuel system supply code, the Code P0232 that has set has to be resolved. P0232 means that the fuel pump relay is stuck on, keeping power supplied to the fuel pump even after the ignition has been turned off although another possibility is the fuel pump secondary power circuit has a short to battery voltage. The factory service manual (FSM) specifies a very lengthy diagnostic (because you have separate tanks). If you do not have the FSM, your best bet is to request a fuel pump diagnostic – dual tanks and let a certified mechanic get to the bottom of this. With regard to the other code, P0704, that code will set if the clutch switch is defective, there is worn clutch pedal lever or clutch lever bushing, shorted or open wiring and/or connectors in the clutch switch circuit, a blown fuse or burnt fusible link and/or, rarely, a faulty PCM or programming error. If you request the pump diagnostic the responding certified mechanic will get this taken care of for you. ANSWER : Hello, thank you for writing in. If the new battery has also failed to hold a charge, the alternator is likely not working correctly. You can test the alternator at home with a voltmeter, or you can remove it and have it tested at most automotive parts stores. It will need to be replaced if it has failed. You will also want to make sure all of the electrical connections are clean, dry, and tight. For more help testing or replacing the alternator, contact our service department to schedule an appointment.

The car has trouble starting after gas tank is filled up
ANSWER : When you fill your gas tank, a lot of fumes build up in the fuel tank and usually excess fumes come out of the fuel filled tube and out to atmosphere or into a recovery system in the fuel pump handle.

You may have a purge valve that is not sealing correctly and the fumes are going into your engine causing your engine to be flooded with fumes while you are refueling. You can help your car start by holding the throttle wide open to get extra air into the engine to get it started, and then letting off the gas once it starts. This is only a way to get it started after refueling until you get the purge valve replaced to fix the problem. If the problem persists, have a mechanic, such as one from YourMechanic, diagnose your car’s hard starting problem to verify what needs to be done.

Can 1 man replace a fuel pump and sending unit, clean out sludge and particles from fuel tank in about 1 hour? Think I was scammed
ANSWER : To drop the fuel tank on your model, and immediately re-install the tank (without any cleaning or service) would require about 2 to 3 hours in total for an experienced professional if a lift is available. The fuel pump itself can be installed without removing the tank but to do that you must have access to the inside of the car because the pump is removed through an access panel under the rear seat. Also, you can’t drop the tank without access to the inside of the car because to drop the tank the wiring harness has to be disconnected and that connection is only accessible from inside the car. So, if the car was locked, obviously no work was performed on the vehicle. YourMechanic does offer these services and you can start by requesting fuel pump replacement.
