Can i make a new sump gasket for my 98 lancer from cork or rubber gasket sheet or do i need to buy a new one?

my 98 lancer has done 337,000km the last service was over 37km ago. in that time it has burnt over 10lt of oil. i can imagine the sump is fairly full of sludgey oil. im about to give it a service and was thinking of going a little further and removing the sump pan and cleaning out in the robowash at work. it this extra step worth it or should i just stick to the normal service? if yes i would like to make a new gasket out of cork or rubber gasket sheet i can get from work is this possible or does the lancer have a molded sump gasket?

My car has 337000 miles.
My car has a manual transmissi

Experienced mechanics share their insights in answering this question :
Hello. If you have reason to believe that your oil sump may be sludgey, due to waiting too long in between services, then it may not be a bad idea to clean it out. Cleaning the pan / sump out would only help extend and maximize the engine’s service life. You may be able to make a new gasket on your own, however a custom molded oil pan gasket, specifically made for that vehicle can likely be found with little difficulty. If you choose to make your own gasket be sure to do so using a sufficiently oil resistant material.

How to Identify and Fix Common car Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced mechanics :

The oil is transferred to the lubrication via the pickup tube (from the oil pump) that is in the sump. After use, the engine oil returns to the sump. It is important that there is a tight seal between the sump and the engine block, therfore a gasket must be used to avoid an oil leak.
RTV sealant is popular with many engine builders, and it`s the preferred sealing method by many OEMs.
Generally speaking a good gasket does not need any sealant. But in most cases a sump can be fitted with sealant rather than a gasket. Use what you`ve got, and if it`s good quality materials and work you shouldn`t have a problem.
The job is somewhat straightforward, but it can be messy. Be conscientious of a few potential pitfalls: Try not to bend the oil pan when removing it. Attempting to pry the pan loose with a screwdriver can bend the mounting surface. Tapping it with a mallet can actually crack the pan if all bolts aren`t out.
Ans. You can easily fix the sump water leakage with the help of cement and fix the cracks with the use of liners.
Cork gaskets have traditionally provided this seal in engines in a very unique way. Engines have oil inside of them, and as the oil comes up against the cork gasket, it helps to provide the seal. When you first change a cork gasket, the oil will come through the seal a bit until it finalizes the sealing.
If lubrication or grease is applied to the gasket or gasket surface, it can cause the gasket to become chemically attacked and can, ultimately, lubricate the sealing surface and allow the gasket to be pushed out easily by the system pressure.
Silicone is an excellent choice for gaskets because it forms a tight seal and repels water. Plus, its ability to withstand temperature extremes make it superior to many other types of rubber.
For example, silicone gaskets are a better choice when dealing with extremely high temperatures. Natural rubber can work well in temperatures from -58 degrees to 176 degrees Fahrenheit. Silicone can handle more extreme temperatures from -58 degrees to 446 degrees.
Engine Gasket

This is the number one area where oil leaks can develop and, we won`t lie, it`s devastating. There is a long seal between your cylinder heads, oil pan, and the engine block, and if this seal breaks, oil can leak into the cylinders and damage your engine.

The gaskets that connect the pan to the engine block can wear over time and allow leaking. An over-tightened drain plug, a bad washer, even rocks and debris from the road all have the ability to cause a major leak if gone untreated. Engines run so hot, that the high temperature can deteriorate the gasket over time.
It could refer to any number of gaskets in your engine. . “Oil pan gasket” however is a specific name that refers to the gasket on the oil “sump” or “pan” Gaskets are joints, they fit between two parts that are bolted together to provide a seal between them.
The first sign of an oil leak isn`t necessarily a major problem. Once you determine you have adequate oil in your engine, it is possible to continue driving in the short term. It`s always best to treat an oil leak as soon as possible, however, to ensure a larger oil leak doesn`t catch you off guard.
Sealing the Sump Pit

The sump pit should be covered with a gas-tight lid. While sump pumps are very effective in removing water, if they are not covered and installed properly, they can create additional water management issues, as well as indoor air quality concerns for the house.

The short answer is yes. Head gasket sealers can temporarily fix a leaking head gasket, but they`re not a permanent solution. These products last a little while and can only do so much; eventually, the wear and tear will need to be dealt with for your car to run properly again.
For the ultimate repair and as an alternative to using putty, one can prepare a square steel plate to cover the crack. Drill holes into the four corners of the plate and tap holes into the sump that line up with the holes on the plate. Apply Pratleymix adhesive to the underside of the plate and onto the sump.
Rubber makes the cork denser and eliminates pathways that can cause leaks. The choice of rubber can control the swell of the material to provide an optimum seal. The choice of rubber is also determined by the chemicals or oils that the product will come in contact with. Rubber makes the cork more stable.
Known for their use in sealing wine bottles, cork materials make relatively cheap and effective seals, with good oil resistance properties.
Silicone is one of the most frequently used sealants to achieve a waterproof, protective joint seal. The flexible, rubbery plastic has high heat resistance and low toxicity, making an ideal sealant choice for plumbing pipes, aquariums, ships, and other metal fabrication projects that require a watertight seal.
Yes, silicone sealants can be used on cars to repair leaks and damage. However, as with any sealant application, we recommend doing thorough research into how to apply car silicone sealants and the best sealants to use for your specific project.
Although they are easy to overlook, gaskets are an essential part of your car`s design, and while they are engineered to be durable, they eventually age and need to be replaced. Gaskets function as a seal where two separate engine parts meet.
Some water pumps are sealed with O-rings on their inlets and outlets. In most cases, no sealant is required. Most installation instructions advise that these O-rings are to be coated with coolant or oil to lubricate the seal and allow the two components to expand and contract independently.
The oil pan gasket is a seal or separator that prevents oil from leaking out. As we all know, engine oil is constantly moving, making it very susceptible to leaks. Fortunately, oil pan gaskets are made of heavy-duty metals and rubber so that they can be resistant to extreme heat and intense pressure.

Got told I needed I new head gasket but my car doesn’t over heat or smokes obut needs o2 sensors… Any suggestion?
ANSWER : Hello, thank you for writing in. Without knowing the symptoms the vehicle is having, it is difficult to say what the issue may be. If you are receiving a code from the computer related to the oxygen sensors, then the sensor(s) may be receiving a reading outside of specification. This can be because fluids are passing through the head gasket and being consumed in the engine. When this happens, the catalytic converter is forced to process contaminants it is not designed to handle. This may set off the an oxygen sensor code. In this situation you would not necessarily see or smell a leak, but you would see a decrease in fluid levels. However, there are several other causes for these sensors to read outside of of specifications. They include a bad connection, bad O2 sensor, or a bad catalytic converter. If you are worried you are being scammed, get a second opinion by contacting our service department.

have code p0017 dealer is telling me i need a new engine is this because they dont know what to do next to my car .?
ANSWER : As you may have already learned, the code p0017 indicates an issue with the crankshaft position sensor. This would mean that that transmission doesn’t understand the speed and can’t send the same information to the transmission. I don’t think your car needs a new engine just based on this code alone. With all the repairs that you’ve done, it’s possible that the ECM is faulty and is producing the code. I recommend having a professional mechanic, such as one from YourMechanic, reset the codes and inspect the Check Engine Light thoroughly in order to make a proper diagnosis.

Throttle Body needs replacing, is cardone re-manufactured ‘better’ than a ‘new’ throttle body
ANSWER : When it comes to remanufactured or brand new you are better off in most cases with the new one. The reason the company did not have the remanufactured one in stock is due to there has not been enough old cores returned to get rebuilt yet or the remanufactured part is in short supply. When it comes to getting a new or remanufactured part I have seen mixed results. The remanufactured one rebuilds an old throttle body using the base housing and installing all new parts in to it. The replacement parts will have to meet or exceed the manufacturers part performance and specifications. Just remember that if the manufacturer identified a product problem and changed the unit specification the dealer will get the new designed part before the aftermarket companies will and you may get old stock on the aftermarket where a dealer will only sell the newer part. If it was myself I would only use a factory new throttle body on this car. It may cost more but at least I would know I would get a new quality part with any last minute changes to product.

It cranks doesn’t start new batteries, oil pressure switch new pmd, new injection pump. new alternator, new glow plugs.
ANSWER : Hello.

A crank but no start condition can be caused by many things. A few common causes are a faulty crank position sensor, or issues with the fuel system. The crank position sensor is used in the engine’s fuel calculations, and in some cases it’s failure will disable the engine.

It may also be possible that there is issues with the fuel system that are preventing the engine from running. If the fuel pump or injectors have an issue the engine may not run correctly, or at all. It may also be possible, for either case, that the issue may be wiring related.

I would start by trying to determine if the engine is getting fuel and then going from there. If you need assistance with these checks, consider YourMechanic, as one of our mobile technicians can come to you in order to diagnose your starting issue firsthand for an accurate repair.

I got a new battery new alternator put in but my battery just gets drained I keep having to buy new batterys
ANSWER : This may be a sign of a failing voltage regulator or potentially a bad grounding problem causing a draw on the system. The voltage regulator is a unit that regulates the charging of the battery by the alternator. Often times this will result in the alternator allowing too much power to be delivered to the battery resulting in damaging wires and prematurely sometimes destroying the battery. In other cases it may result in the alternator not supplying enough power to the battery, resulting in undercharging the battery or not charging it at all. In either case, I would recommend having an expert from YourMechanic come to your location to diagnose your vehicle’s charging system.

Check engine light is on for the catalytic converter , I fixed one about a year ago. Is there a part needed, Frontback? Which part
ANSWER : Since your vehicle has a V shaped engine, it will likely have two catalytic converters. Since the engine is mounted transversly in the vehicle (because it is front wheel drive) there will be one converter on the front and one on the rear. If you had one replaced, it is likely the issue is coming from the opposite converter. I would recommend having your exhaust system inspected by a qualified professional who has experience in exhaust system diagnosis and repair.
