Won’t Shift into drive, 2008 Pontiac G8

My car is having shifting problems, and it won’t go anywhere when I put it in Drive. But it goes into Reverse just fine. I checked my transmission level and it's good. I was thinking maybe it’s one of the sensors. But I've never had a problem with the transmission. I change the radiator fluid all the time. I put 2 new quarts of transmission fluid in my car, and was able to drive in Reverse fine and even in Drive. I put it in Park for 2 weeks, and it sat around. Then when I tried driving it again and put it into Drive it wouldn't go anywhere, but it went into Reverse jus

Unfortunately, it sounds like you have an internal transmission problem that will require the transmission be rebuilt or replaced. A transmission that won’t go into any forward gear almost always indicates an internal mechanical problem as opposed to an electrical problem, like a sensor. I’m not sure if you have the 6L80E or 5L40E transmission, but my guess is that the problem is probably in the 1-2-3-4 clutch assembly. I suggest you have a professional, such as one from YourMechanic, diagnose the shifting issue firsthand, and advise you on the next steps.

How to Identify and Fix Common car Problems ?

The number one cause is the clutch components have worn out and no longer have enough friction material to overcome the weight of the vehicle. A second possibility is the transmission can be stuck in two gears at the same time and it won`t move. The shift mechanism can malfunction and keep you from selecting a gear.
Over time, dirt, debris and other tiny particles can accumulate in the transmission fluid, affecting its fluid properties. This can cause the vehicle to die when you shift into drive or reverse, allow a loss of power, transmission slip, rough shifts or even prevent the vehicle from shifting into gear at all.
Such problems aren`t hard to spot. 2009 Pontiac G8 transmission problems could include shifting delays, grinding when accelerating, the car shaking at any speed, or whistling noises and a burning smell coming from under the hood.
Transmission Issues

Transmission is most likely to be the culprit for the car wont move in drive but will in reverse issue. When the vehicle does not function in one or more gears, you should check the gear shifter. The gear cable could be stretched further than the normal length and will need adjustment.

There are endless medical problems that can affect your ability to drive safely – both temporary and permanent. Failing eyesight; poor balance or coordination; issues with memory or concentration; lack of muscle strength or control; reaction times; pain and drowsiness – all can affect your safety on the road.
Turn off your vehicle`s ignition and wait patiently for 5 to 10 seconds. Start the engine and allow it to idle for several seconds. Switch off the ignition and wait patiently for another 30 to 40 seconds. Repeat these steps 2 to 3 times in order to reset your vehicle`s transmission control module.
Worn Transmission Fluid (Automatic Transmission)

Over time, the transmission fluid gathers dirt and grime. This can cause the engine to run roughly, stall or fail to accelerate when you press down on the gas pedal. You may need to have a transmission fluid change before more damage is done.

In most cases, this issue is caused by a damaged shift solenoid or perhaps an obstruction of debris inside the transmission hydraulic lines. It could also be caused by damaged inside the transmission…

My car will not shift out of drive and into park – 1999 Hyundai Sonata
ANSWER : Hi. This sounds like the ignition switch has a problem and is not allowing the car to go into park. If the ignition switch is not sending the signal to the neutral safety switch that the key is in the run position, it will not allow the shifter to move. It is also possible that the shift linkage is damaged and is causing the problem you have as well.

I suggest you have a certified technician, such as one from YourMechanic, come to your location to determine why the car is not shifting properly and suggest the necessary repairs

Won’t shift past 2nd gear . It drives normal to 2nd gear but wont shift into 3r – 2000 Ford F150 4×4
ANSWER : Hello – I don’t think this is related to switching back to 2WD per se. There is a shift position sensor on the side of the transmission, and it’s possible that the snow activity caused moisture and/or dirt to get into the sensor. I would recommend a transmission inspection by a mobile, professional mechanic, such as one from YourMechanic, who will come to your location, diagnose this problem, give you an accurate assessment of damage and cost estimate for repairs.

My car won’t shift past 30mph while driving and it revs up.
ANSWER : Hi there. It looks like you’ve got multiple problems with your 95 Ford Taurus. The transmission issue may be due to a clogged hydraulic line, which is why most certified mechanics will recommend a transmission flush as opposed to just adding oil when there is a shifting issue. The issue with the battery is most likely due to the alternator or could be electrical due to a bad connection. The problem with many older cars is that sometimes age and parts fatigue will show up quickly, even with just 70,000 miles on the vehicle.

My suggestion to you is to contact a local ASE certified mechanic who can give your car a complete safety inspection to let you know what needs to be fixed before you spend any more money chasing problems.

Shifting issues from drive to reverse and back to drive

My pacifica runs and drives only reverse when i shift it to drive dies quickly . But you can shift it to reverse and neutral
ANSWER : This is an internal problem with the transmission and may be a valve body or leaking internal seal. The problem is the transmission leaking pressure internally, and when you put it in drive, the transmission is trying to go into reverse and drive at the same time causing the transmission to stall the engine. Have a mechanic, such as one from YourMechanic, scan the computer to see if a code is received that will help detect the cause. They will be able to diagnose your stalling issue, and any other problem you are having, so that a proper repair can be made.

Car does not engage drive when cold, after it warms up shift into drive with no problem. No grinding ect.
ANSWER : The oil pump in your transmission is probably worn out. The oil pump produces the hydraulic pressure that the transmission uses to engage the forward clutch. As the transmission warms up and some of the clearances tighten up, there is just enough pressure to make it work, but soon it probably won’t work at all. If you haven’t changed the fluid and filter, you may be able to extend the life of the transmission some with that service, but eventually you will probably need to get an transmission or an overhaul. To get a hands on opinion, you can contact Your Mechanic They can send a technician to your home or office to check out your transmission problem and tell you for sure what it will take to solve your problem.

Truck stalls when shifting into drive from park or reverse
ANSWER : Hi there. The vehicle running great, once past the initial stall, leads me away from a fuel delivery concern. The stalling issue may be, the minimum airflow rate is not properly set. This could be the result of a dirty or worn throttle body. Cleaning and/or making an adjustment to the throttle body may correct the problem. Engine running at idle, plug the IAC passage, and the RPM (revolutions per minute) should be at or near 400 rpm. A vacuum leak present could also cause the engine idle to be improperly controlled and needs to be identified before any adjustments are made. I recommend having your vehicle’s stalling issue be diagnosed and repaired by a certified technician, such as one from YourMechanic.
