Will Not Go In Park.

About 6 months ago we notice it was hard to get it out of park. we would have to jerk hard to get it out of park. Now it will not go in park.
My car has an automatic transmission.
Experienced mechanics share their insights in answering this question :
It sounds like you may have broke the shift mechanism trying to get it out of park. Since it’s now broken it won’t engage anymore. I’d suggest have the system checked by a certified mechanic, like one from YourMechanic, to confirm my suspicion and suggest a fix. In the mean time you should use the parking brake.

How to Identify and Fix Common car Problems ?

Common reasons for this to happen:

Transmission cables usually break due to stretching, which happens over time or can result due to speed shifting or jamming the car into gear. Stretched Transmission Cable: Prior to breaking, a transmission cable will stretch. When this happens the car may be hard to put in park.

In most cases, this issue is caused by a damaged shift solenoid or perhaps an obstruction of debris inside the transmission hydraulic lines. It could also be caused by damaged inside the transmission…
The brake light switch is the main culprit for your gearshift being stuck in the mode. It`s a small sensor located on the brake pedal that prevents the car from starting if the brake pedal isn`t depressed.
It sounds like you most likely have a broken shift cable, or a failed shifter assembly. A failure of either part would allow you to move the shifter handle to park, while the transmission actually remains in drive.
A shifter interlock solenoid ensures that you can`t move your car from park to drive mode without applying the brake. It tends to cost about $200 to replace.
Common signs include the indicator not matching the gear and the vehicle not turning off, starting in another gear, or not going into gear at all.
The main reason the car won`t go into gear is that the level of transmission fluid in the vehicle is lower than required. If the level is low despite regular maintenance, there may be a leak. Transmission fluid, therefore, is important to ensure that the car`s moving parts are properly lubricated for functioning.
Most automatic gearboxes will let you select between `P` (for park), `R` (reverse), `N` (neutral) and `D` (drive). Park should only be used when you`re stopped and getting out of the car. This `locks` the transmission, preventing it from rolling away (but you still need to apply the handbrake when parked as well).
A transmission shift solenoid is what controls the flow of transmission fluid. This is done through a module that sends an electrical signal telling the shift solenoid exactly when to transfer fluid in and out of the transmission along with the right rate.
Third gear either locks the transmission in third gear or limits it to the first, second, and third gear ratios.
How important is replacing a Shift Lock Solenoid? Unfortunately, if it fails it will lock you out and you`re stuck there. No driving for you. There are, apparently, some ways to override the system, but they are not recommended.
When Shift Lock is activated on the touch keyboard, the Shift button will be highlighted with a lock emblem on it. All letters on the touch keyboard will be uppercase while Shift Lock is activated. If you find the Shift Lock feature to be an annoyance, you can disable it on the touch keyboard.
The most common symptom of a bad transmission shift solenoid is unpredictable and delayed gear shifts. You can also notice signs like a check engine light or a transmission warning light on your dashboard. In some cases, the car will also go into limp mode.
The most common reasons are: Shift lock solenoid – The shift lock solenoid is the mechanism that stops the BMW from being able to be shifted out of park when the vehicle is off, it also won`t let you put your vehicle into drive without turning on your ignition and putting your foot on the brake.

Hard shifting, sluggish transmission, or gears slipping: With a manual transmission, you may start to notice that it becomes harder to change gears, or that the shifter pops out of gear. With an automatic transmission, you might experience a slipping of gears while you`re driving.

Blocked shifter

Most of the time, it is found that the shifter is clogged due to the entry of any foreign particles in it. This will also lead to the situation in which the Mercedes will not be able to shift into park or for that matter any other gears depending upon the location of the blockage.

My car won’t go past 35mph
ANSWER : Hi there. From the description you provided, your vehicle has problems with the transmission again. You stated it will not shift into 3rd gear again, like before the transmission was rebuilt. If the transmission is again the problem, it should be covered under warranty. It could be a faulty shift solenoid. The shift indicator not reading properly could be a faulty transmission position sensor. If this is an overall lack of performance issue, according to your last statement, then possibly you have a restriction in the exhaust system. I recommend having your vehicle’s problems inspected and diagnosed by a certified technician from YourMechanic.

It will not go in to park or shift in to any gears.
ANSWER : Hi there. Based on what you have written, it is quite possible that internal components inside the transfer case have broken. This is something that typically requires the transfer case (with internal components installed) to be replaced. Unfortunately, it’s not a service that our mobile mechanics are able to offer. I would recommend contacting your local Ford dealership or suspension repair facility to inquire about the cost of replacing the transfer case. My general rule of thumb is that if repairs are more than 50% of the total blue book value of your vehicle; it’s a good idea to search for a different vehicle.

My windows won’t go down, my instruments don’t work, my car won’t go in park without shift release
ANSWER : Hi, thanks for writing in. In most cases, the problems you’re describing are caused by damage to the electrical system either at the fuse box or through relays that send electrical signals to each component that isn’t working; such as your power windows, instrument panel and others. If the vehicle was exposed to lots of water, this may have damaged the electrical system or the vehicle’s on board computer as well. The best way to reduce the stress, time and money on trying to find the exact source of your problems is to have one of our local mechanics inspect your Honda Accord for electrical problems at your home or office.

previous owner snatched shifter out ouf park very hard now shifter will not go back to park var will not start 2007 cadillac
ANSWER : Hello, thank you for writing in. The vehicle is designed to start only if the vehicle is in park. This is so the vehicle will not move immediately once its started. When it comes to resolving the issue, you are able to check the shift linkage going to the transmission from the shift knob, and you are able to see what gear the transmission thinks its in. You may also be able (depending on whats wrong) manually switch the automatic transmission into park where the shift linkage connects. If you cannot resolve the problem this way, the vehicle needs to be inspected by a transmission specialist. For more help, contact our service department about scheduling.

When driving and going over 55 mph the car starts shaking like it is going to cut off.
ANSWER : Hi there! There are several reasons why your TL can act this way.

First off, if this behavior is predominantly after the car has been sitting overnight or longer, it can be the result of "flat-spotting" – the low profile tires, with very stiff sidewall, develop "flat spots" where the tire sits on the pavement. This is overcome with 5-10 miles of highway driving, and the tire heat up a bit, and air pressure in the tire makes them round again.

The second possibility is out-of-balance tire/wheel combinations. Your tire shop can check the balance for you, and correct balance if necessary.

The third possibility is an axle with bad CV joints. If the CV joints are worn, they essentially "wobble", and this vibration is transmitted into the structure of the vehicle – which you could feel both with the steering wheel, and "seat-of-the-pants".

To avoid any unnecessary repairs, I would recommend having the shaking symptom diagnosed by a mobile, professional mechanic, such as one from YourMechanic, to diagnose this problem, get an accurate assessment of damage and cost estimate for repairs.

Tranny won’t go into park 2009 Toyota Corolla
ANSWER : Hello – the P0705 would normally indicate a mismatch between the shifter and the transmissions internally gear indicator. However your efforts to manually engage Park at the transmission is indicative of an internal transmission problem. For a professional 2nd opinion, I would recommend an inspection of the transmission and shifter to confirm the diagnosis of an internal problem. A mobile, professional mechanic, such as one from YourMechanic, who will come to your location, diagnose this problem, give you an accurate assessment of damage and cost estimate for repairs.
