When shifting into 1st gear and attempting to take off, car shakes and then stalls. Car also won’t let me shift into reverse.

My car seems to "choke" and shakes when launching in first gear. I can take off slowly in 2nd gear fine without any of the vibrating or noise coming from the engine. I'm also not able to engage reverse, the car moves forward as if it were stuck in 4th instead of shifting to reverse. Could this be this shift linkage? Or possibly the transmission? From what j can tell the car runs fine and pulls healthy in any other gear but I just can't figure it out and I want advice before taking it to a mechanic. I appreciate the help in advance, thank you.

My car has 163000 miles.

Experienced mechanics share their insights in answering this question :
Hi there. Either the shifter rail is damaged inside the transmission keeping the gears from going into reverse and the first gear from connecting all the way, or the transmission first and reverse gears are damaged causing the transmission to have a hesitation on the forward 1st gear and no reverse. I recommend seeking out a professional, such as one from Your Mechanic, to help you diagnose your transmission shifting issue.

How to Identify and Fix Common car Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced mechanics :

There are a large number of reasons why your car might stall while driving. It could be a dead alternator, a bad coolant sensor or lack of fuel, just to name a few. Is your car stalling while accelerating? If so, then it could be a major vacuum leak, clogged fuel filter or a bad fuel pump.
Stalling in reverse is a common problem most car owners face and has many potential culprits behind it. The most common culprits include clogged fuel injectors, clogged transmission fluid lines, bad fuel pump, bad fuel filter, failing idle control valve, failing sensors, and poor earthling connections.
If your vehicle is shaking when accelerating from first gear, and not shifting into overdrive or the higher gears, then there is likely some sort of issue with the transmission. A few things that can cause these symptoms are low or dirty transmission fluid, a faulty transmission sensor, or a worn out transmission.
Most Stall in 1st & Reverse

And usually, the only time that you`re going to stall the vehicle is if you`re starting from a dead stop. It`s unlikely if the vehicles is rolling that you`re going to stall it. You might have it in too high of a gear, like if you put it in fifth gear, for example.

When you`re reversing, you`re probably moving very slowly to make sure everything`s safe. But if you`re not giving the engine enough revs, it`s going to stall. It feels a bit scary, but you do often need to accelerate gently as you`re moving back – just a little bit to keep the car from stalling.
Automatic transmissions that shift hard, jerk or shake during a shift change may mean your transmission fluid needs changed or fluid level is low. In manual transmission vehicles, abnormal gear shifts could indicate damaged gear synchros, worn clutches or other, more severe issues.
Some simple warning signs that the transmission is having problems: Transmission is slow to respond when shifting. Grinding, shaking, vibrating.
Why do manual cars stall? Usually, manual cars will stall because the driver has let the clutch out too quickly. This means the `revolutions per minute` (RPM) of the engine has dropped too low and the engine has stopped. You`re less likely to stall if you release the clutch slowly.
If the vehicle is stuck or stalled, you may need to give it a push to move it. Before the car can be pushed, it should be placed in the neutral gear. Pushing a vehicle is a two-person job; one person can steer the vehicle while others can push. The neutral gear is handy during stalled emergencies.
Automatic transmission problems can be caused by a lack of transmission fluid. If you are experiencing slipping, the first thing you should do is check your transmission fluid levels. If they are low, you should top it up and check for leaks. Slipping can also be caused by burned or worn out fluid.
The only fix is to completely replace the CV joint. The main purpose of motor mounts is to attach a car`s engine to the frame of the vehicle. A secondary purpose is to dampen or reduce engine vibration so the occupants of the car don`t feel the constant shaking or vibrating of the engine while it`s running.

When shifting into 1st gear and attempting to take off, car shakes and then stalls. Car also won’t let me shift into reverse.
ANSWER : Hi there. Either the shifter rail is damaged inside the transmission keeping the gears from going into reverse and the first gear from connecting all the way, or the transmission first and reverse gears are damaged causing the transmission to have a hesitation on the forward 1st gear and no reverse. I recommend seeking out a professional, such as one from Your Mechanic, to help you diagnose your transmission shifting issue.

when I put my car in drive it won’t go but when I put it in low gear and up the RPM its will slowly take off then I have to shift
ANSWER : Hello. The transmission malfunctions you are experiencing can be caused by a wide variety of issues. A few common causes for improper shifting behavior are low or contaminated transmission fluid, transmission sensor issues, or a worn transmission. The first thing I would do is check the vehicle’s transmission fluid to make sure that it is clean and at the correct level. Automatic transmissions operate using fluid pressure and can experience all sorts of issues, including problems shifting, if the fluid is low or dirty. It may also be possible that one or more the transmission components has gone bad and needs to be replaced. Automatic transmission use a series of solenoids and sensors to control the transmission shifting point, and can cause symptoms similar to those you are experiencing if they go bad. Another possibility is that the transmission itself has worn out due to age and service, and may need to be serviced or even rebuilt. As these sorts of issues can sometimes be difficult to diagnose, I would recommend having a professional technician, such as one from YourMechanic, come to your location to determine what the exact cause of your shifting and transmission problems.

The car doesn’t shift into first gear while it works fine in reverse
ANSWER : The problem could be that the internal transmission pump is weak, or the transmission clutch seals are leaking. It sounds like the transmission will need an overhaul.

I recommend having a transmission mechanic test the pressures and diagnose the problems to verify whether you need an overhaul with a new torque convertor.

The engine stalls when I put the car in reverse, but if I go past reverse into drive there is not an issue.
ANSWER : Hi there. Usually when you shift into reverse and engage the brake it will cause the engine RPM to drop; as it’s creating a load against the transmission and the engine. If the engine stalls, it may be caused by a faulty idle control valve, bad O2 sensors, or clogged fuel injectors.

In regards to the "pan", we’re not sure what you are referring, so it may be a good idea to contact one of our local professional mechanics to complete a battery inspection to determine what’s going on with your 2010 Ford Focus.

Car won’t go into gear. 2002 Audi A4 Quattro
ANSWER : Hi there – Your symptoms describe the behavior to expect when your clutch hydraulics go out (clutch master and clutch slave cylinders). Check your clutch fluid level – it may be low. If the fluid level is low, this usually means your clutch slave cylinder has worn out, not unusual with your mileage, and should be replaced. I recommend a malfunctioning clutch inspection performed by a mobile, professional mechanic, such as one from YourMechanic, who will come to your location, diagnose this problem, give you an accurate assessment of damage and cost estimate for repairs.

Engine stalling at low speeds while shifting from first gear to second gear and reverse, with P2757 code
ANSWER : P2757 indicates a torque converter clutch solenoid control circuit issue. If the transmission has been rebuilt, then wiring between the control unit and the transmission may be faulty. The harness connector from the wiring harness to the transmission needs to be checked to be sure the connector is free of contamination. Another possibility could be a faulty torque converter. You may want to enlist the help of a mechanic or service center to assess your stalling issue and determine what is causing the problem.

I got sound when I shift to 3rd gear and it’s get hard to put shift to second gear when car is in 3rd gear.
ANSWER : Hello. It sounds as though the synchronizers in the transmission, which are used to adjust transmission internal gear speed when upshifting or downshifting are possibly worn out or you are shifting a bit too fast. It is also possible that the clutch is not releasing fully when you press the clutch pedal. In some conditions, utilizing synthetic gear oil in the transmission can help the quality of gear shifting. If the clutch is not fully releasing an inspection of the clutch hydraulics is a good idea. I would recommend having an inspection of the hard shift completed by a mobile, professional mechanic, such as one from YourMechanic, who will come to your location, diagnose this problem, give you an accurate assessment of damage and cost for repairs.

My manual car won’t go into gear, it turns on and the clutch goes down perfectly fine. It happened after my gears grinded, the car
ANSWER : If the clutch mechanism is releasing properly, and the shift linkage is not malfunctioning, your transmission will have to be removed from the vehicle and inspected. Once a transmission has been removed from a vehicle, if the problem is a broken or worn part or parts, and the transmission has 100,000 miles or more, the most cost effective approach is to just simply rebuild the whole transmission. There are transmission rebuild kits that are sold just for this purpose. Rebuilding a transmission is no big deal and is indeed easier in many respects than rebuilding an engine. You can rebuild your transmission right in your own garage. You can NOT rebuild an engine in your own garage due to the highly specialized, and extremely costly, machine shop equipment required. Occasionally, mobile mechanics will take on a transmission rebuild job especially as once the mechanic removes the transmission from the vehicle, it is just simply a modular unit that can be easily transported to a mechanic’s shop and rebuilt right there and then returned to your vehicle. If you have further questions or concerns, do not hesitate to re-contact YourMechanic as we are always here to help you.
