When jump-starting, there is a clicking noise

When I start my car, there is a clicking noise. A friend and I tried jump starting it and it did sound like it was ‘trying’ to start, but wouldn’t start all the way. The window lights in the car do work. We’re assuming it’s the battery since it was ‘trying’ to start when we jump started it, but when we took the jumper cables off, it went back to the clicking noise. What does all this mean and what can we do to get it to start?
Experienced mechanics share their insights in answering this question :
The first step would be to have the battery and cables tested to see if they are in need of replacement. If the vehicle is not supplying enough voltage, then the vehicle will not start. The battery may supply enough to power a couple of lights, but the starter and computer systems need full battery power to work correctly. Have a mechanic come and check the battery and starting systems for you and then go from there.

How to Identify and Fix Common car Problems ?

It might be a battery or alternator problem.

A rapid clicking noise when trying to start your car could mean there`s something wrong within the electrical system. Perhaps your battery`s dead, or your alternator, which charges the battery, isn`t working correctly.

Clicking sounds are often relative to the starter relay and solenoid and might indicate the battery is low on volts. One loud click may indicate that the starter relay or starter motor may not be engaging with the engine. However, rapid clicking is a good indicator that the battery is low on volts.
If you are jump-starting a car, but all you hear is a click, it is because: your jumper cables` clamps are not making good contact, a jump box is not fully charged, your car battery is completely discharged and needs to charge first.
it sounds like you may have a problem with the charging system not properly maintaining a charge on the battery. The clicking sound (usually very rapid) is a result of the battery not generating enough power to cause the starter motor to turn the engine over.
It requires a good deal of energy to crank the car`s motor, and if a battery is not replenishing its power properly due to a faulty alternator, it will become drained and ineffective. You will hear a clicking noise while attempting to start the car, and the engine will have difficulty turning over.
If you hear a whine or the sound goes fuzzy when you hit the gas, your alternator is probably failing. If the vehicle won`t crank or start but the headlights are still working, look to problems with the starter or other parts of the engine.
If you have a no-start condition where you suspect a bad battery, you could simply listen for the noise that comes from the engine on startup. A failing car battery usually would make a chattering or whirring noise which is not transient as opposed to a bad starter.
One common reason why a car won`t jump start is because the battery is completely dead. If the battery is completely dead, it won`t have enough power to turn over the engine, even with a jump start. In this case, you`ll need to replace the battery to get your car running again.
Incorrect jumper cable connections can cause fires and explosions, which can lead to injury or damage to your vehicle. For maximum safety, follow these four steps when connecting jumper cables: Connect one red clamp to the positive terminal of the dead vehicle`s battery.
You should expect jumpstarting a dead battery to take five minutes, but in harsh conditions, it could take up to thirty minutes to jumpstart your car. You need to drive for at least fifteen minutes after a jumpstart to fully recharge the battery.
Why won`t my car start but the battery is good? If your car won`t start but the battery is good, the most common cause is a faulty starter – though it could also be to do with your fuel. You may have insufficient fuel to get the car going.
If your car won`t start but the lights come on, it is likely not an issue with your battery so it`s time to turn your attention to your ignition switch. A failed ignition switch won`t be able to supply power to the starter motor, ignition system, and other engine controls, preventing the engine from starting.
A car`s engine won`t start if you jump-start it with a damaged starter motor. Jump-starting just increases the power of the battery. An auto transmission automobile cannot be pushed or towed started. However, a manual transmission car with a broken starter may.

How can I test a portable battery jump-starter, to make sure it works? Disconnect the battery from the car and connect the car`s battery cables to the jump starter. If it successfully starts the car, it`s good. If not, it`s bad.

Clicking noise in idle (link of Video of noise included)
ANSWER : Hi there. Although it is hard to pinpoint the exact source of this noise via a video, it sounds a lot like an exhaust leak. When the exhaust manifold of exhaust tubes age, they are exposed to elements, creating weakness in the metal and eventually will crack or break. It is also possible that this sound is caused by cylinder head hardware that is loose (such as lifters or rocker arms) or not getting enough lubrication. Again, without being there it is impossible to know for certain, but you might want to have a professional mechanic complete a car is making a noise inspection to determine what is causing this issue.

Brief, loud clicking noise from dashboard area when AC is turned on.

loud rattling noise when accelerating, somewhat quiet clicking noise when idling
ANSWER : Hello, thank you for writing in. In this kind of situation, the noise may very well be related to the recent work. Start by going back through as best you can without disconnecting too many things to verify your repair. Make sure you did not leave out any screws, make sure all torque specs were followed, make sure nothing is leaking, make sure all your fluids are full and in good condition, and make sure nothing has shifted. Due to it being related to engine speed, you want to make sure the drive belt is also tight and correctly placed on its pulleys. It won’t start. It goes click, click, click rapidly. Is it the battery or the starter?
ANSWER : Hello there. A crank but no start is a very common problem on your 2003 Honda Accord. Many faults can cause this but the first one to rule out would be the battery, a load test must be performed to check the voltage, cranking amps, and battery condition to make sure it is capable of starting the car. Other common faults are the battery terminals, starter, battery cables, ignition switch, fuel pump, or fuel filter. If you need more help with this, a qualified technician, like one from YourMechanic, will be able to diagnose your crank no start and make any move forward with any repairs required to resolve this.

Idling problems and flashing check engine light clicking noise being glove box by relay
ANSWER : The green key flashing is an immobilizer which can be caused for many reasons including a simple bad battery connection. The rough idle problem suggests a potentially bad idle air control module which regulates the air flow into the intake system as it is mixed with fuel prior to being injected into the motor. When this is faulty, it will cause the car not to idle correctly or intermittently. The bad battery connection may also be responsible for the gauges not working as well. I would recommend having an expert from YourMechanic come to your home to diagnose this rough idling issue with a scanning tool which will provide vital information from the car’s computer indicating the problem.

Humming noise coming from Right Front hub, click noise in the steering gear – What is the problem? 2004 Cadillac Escalade
ANSWER : Hello – I believe the humming noise you mention in the right front wheel area is a worn front wheel bearing/hub assembly. If the noise is louder when turning left while in motion, that would confirm the diagnosis. I would recommend having the right, front wheel bearing replaced by a mobile, professional mechanic, such as one from YourMechanic, who will come to your location, diagnose this problem, give you an accurate assessment of damage and cost estimate for repairs. The clicking noise while turning the steering wheel may be a problem with the upper steering shaft in the steering column. Cadillac has issued a technical service bulletin for problems with the steering performance (# 232985). Check with your Cadillac dealer service center for more information on this repair.
