Wheel bearing

I am hearing noise from my right wheel and I don't know if I can replace the entire hub quite simply myself or if I have to take it to the shop and they have to press it out?

My car has 146000 miles.

Experienced mechanics share their insights in answering this question :
If you are not sure you can do it, then I would suggest having a mechanic do the work for you. If you do feel you want to do this job, then you will need to make sure you have the axle nut socket and a large breaker bar. The axle needs a special axle remover tool and a slide hammer tool to get hub out in most cases. Then, when installing, you will need a large torque wrench to install the new axle nut to proper tightening specifications. This can be a tough job. If you need help, an expert technician, such as one from YourMechanic, can come to your home or office to replace your wheel bearing or the entire wheel hub assembly for you.

Labor costs are estimated between $106 and $133 while parts are priced between $91 and $91.
Q: Is it safe to drive with a bad wheel bearing? A: No. It can, in fact, be very dangerous to drive if one of your bearings is worn out, especially since it may cause the wheel to stop while driving. Additionally, a damaged wheel bearing puts a lot of stress on the hub, the CV joint, and the transmission itself.
Other times, a bad bearing doesn`t even make a sound. But to test whether a bearing has gone bad, you can either put your car up on a lift or put it up on jack stands, then grip your hands on either the 3 and 9 o`clock or the 6 and 12 o`clock positions of the tire, then try to wiggle the wheel back and forth.
The bearings won`t allow the wheel to turn freely, which exacerbates the problem. It also puts stress and strain on the hub, the CV joint, the axle, and the transmission. Ultimate damage: If you don`t replace a damaged wheel bearing before it fails completely, the wheel will completely seize up.
Unless both bearings on all side of the wheels are overworked, there is no need to replace them all at once. You should only swap out the ones that need it.
Can You Replace Wheel Bearings Yourself? You can lower your wheel bearing replacement cost by changing them yourself. You should be able to do this in your own garage. However, it will require some specialized tools.
If the bearing noise has been growing gradually, then without suggesting it is “okay” to drive 200 miles, the noise may just grow worse over that distance. If the bearing noise appeared out of nowhere, then that suggests an immediate failure potential and should be changed BEFORE a 200 mile drive.
Once you notice any sign indicating a bad wheel bearing, avoid exceeding 500 miles with that issue. A failing wheel bearing will increase your difficulty in driving. But with a high-quality wheel bearing, you can drive for another 1000 miles as per the estimate.
A sure sign that your bearing has failed is vibration. If the raceway surface of the bearing becomes damaged by abrasion, the rolling elements (the balls or rollers) will bounce around on the raceway surface during operation, causing high levels of vibration.
Squealing Or Grinding Noise

If the noise becomes worse the faster you drive, then it`s almost certainly a bad wheel bearing. If the noise remains the same, then the issue may be the tires instead. The noise may be the result of an under-inflated tire or improperly aligned tires.

Driving with worn wheel bearings can cause serious damage to your drive-axle and steering assembly and ultimately be a major safety hazard. Driving on a bad wheel bearing puts stress on the hub and CV joint, brake system components, and ultimately on the transmission itself.

I hear an abnormal noise from front driver’s side wheel. It sounds like a wheel bearing but not sure.
ANSWER : A wheel bearing noise can be different between vehicles as some designs may vary a little. The most common is a roaring noise that may change when going around turns. It may be louder going in one direction or the other or just make a loud noise all of the time. The wheel hub presses into the wheel bearing. The hub is where the studs are for the wheel to be bolted onto the steering knuckle and the bearing provides the support for the wheel and weight of the vehicle. Consider hiring an experienced technician like one from YourMechanic who can come out and take a closer look at your wheel bearing noise to offer a more personal diagnosis.

Can front wheel drive car engine power rear wheel drive
ANSWER : Anything is possible with enough engineering. The changes you are looking at would take major structural changes and would definitely not be an easy job. You could possibly consult a manufacturing engineer to get more details on how this could actually be carried out and whether it would be feasible.

Will a bad wheel bearing damage the CV joints, or will bad CV joints damage the wheel bearing? Honda Accord lax 2006
ANSWER : Any bad part in the drive train can put additional stress on other parts. I could probably draw a line from a bad wheel bearing to a bad CV joint. Not so much the other way. However, it might seem that way because the parts have a similar life span. Once one part fails, the others may come soon after. If your car really only has 45000 miles it seems a little soon for either one to be failing unless you are living and driving in bad northern winters. If your car is making sounds in either the CV or the wheel bearings, you can have it checked out at your convenience by contacting Your Mechanic. They can send a technician to your home or office to check out your Honda and tell you what it may need.

What name is given to the bearing after the wheel bearing on a 2006 Pontiac Torrent
ANSWER : In your application, the passenger side CV axle does not use a carrier (center support) bearing. The noise you are describing could be due to failure of the same wheel bearing (not a rare occurrence, please read below), or the noise could be due to a tire defect, brake problem, or axle or transmission issue. If you request a diagnostic, the cause will be pinpointed. If it were to turn out that the noise is from the wheel bearing that you replaced 8-9 months ago, replacement bearings will fail if the axle nut is over tightened when the vehicle is re-assembled. Unfortunately, that is a common problem because people do not read the instructions in the Factory Service Manual. The nut that holds the CV axle to the hub can ONLY be tightened with a calibrated torque wrench and the nut has to be tightened only to exact value published in the Factory Service Manual. Shops and amateurs will sometimes use an air tool or an ordinary wrench, contrary to the explicit instructions, and the consequence is the axle nut is overtightened and the bearing is guaranteed to fail prematurely. The other common cause of premature bearing failure is the use of cheap aftermarket bearings (or hub assemblies). If you use the OEM (dealer supplied) bearing or a recognizable, reputable vendor such as SKF you will be better off. To get the bearing inspected, and replaced if failed, please request hub assembly inspection/replacement. If you have further questions or concerns, do not hesitate to re-contact YourMechanic as we are always here to help you.

Can a poorly installed wheel bearing cause extensive damage when driven on?
ANSWER : Hi there:

It’s highly unlikely that the installation of a wheel bearing causes mechanical damage that the mechanic has listed above. Typically those components (Axle shaft leaking, steering knuckle, lower ball joint, lower control arm, front strut) are not touched during a wheel bearing replacement. However, it is very possible that the diagnosis of damage due to accident is simply wear and tear, which tends to happen on Toyota Prius’ quite often and usually around 50,000 miles.

I am having a problem fixing my left rear wheel bearing and hub assembly
ANSWER : Hello there, thank you for asking about your 2010 Hyundai Veracruz. You should have loosened the rear parking brake shoes using the access hole on the rotor. The parking brake shoes can hold the rotor/drum on and will not separate. If you need help from a certified mechanic, have a technician from YourMechanic replace your rear wheel bearings at your home or office.

Why is my wheel bearing always acting up?
ANSWER : Greetings and thank you for writing in with this question! If the vehicle is lifted or has larger-than-stock tires, this may be the cause of the wheel bearing problem. Non-stock ride height and custom suspension parts cause undue stress on the wheel hubs and bearings. Additional possibilities include water and/or mud intrusion in the hub/bearing assembly. You may address your situation by replacing the front hubs and bearings with aftermarket units. Scheduling an appointment to diagnose the situation and installation is important, as improper installation can cause these failures as well.
