My car's transmission is unknown to me.
Experienced mechanics share their insights in answering this question :
Hello, thanks for writing in about your Ford F-100. Depending on the engine you have and if you have a manual transmission then you may have broken motor and transmission mounts that will cause the clutch linkage and shifter to not work correct since it gets out of alignment.

If you need assistance with this repair, consider YourMechanic, as one of our mobile technicians can come to your home or office to diagnose your shifting issue firsthand for an accurate repair.

An engine mount that needs replacing can often cause a jolt when changing gears on an attached transmission. This jolt or thump can also be noticeable when travelling at faster speeds due to the engine working harder. If your machine doesn`t feel as smooth as usual, this can often be down to a damaged engine mount.
The answer is almost always, no—a bad transmission mount will not cause the transmission to slip. But there may be some rare cases where a failed mount causes enough movement to throw off the manual shift linkage or the throttle valve linkage (on an older vehicle), thereby impacting shift quality and shift timing.
If the transmission mount is broken, it can create driveline noise when starting or accelerating, and it might even affect the operation of the clutch or other linkage. The rubber material is molded into the mount, so there`s no direct metal-to-metal contact between the engine or body.
Transmission Fluid Low or Poor Condition – Vehicles low on transmission fluid or that are operating with worn out or contaminated fluid are likely to experience hard shift conditions. Lack of adequate lubrication within the transmission can cause several problems, including hard shifting.
If you shift your vehicle into Drive or Reverse and feel a sudden jerk, it could be a sign that you have a bad engine mount. The jerking is caused by the movement of the engine whenever you change gears. You may also feel the entire vehicle move.
Worn fluid can lead to hard shifts

The fluid`s frictional properties play a vital role in ensuring the clutch plates bind together properly and gear shifts occur seamlessly. Over time, the fluid`s frictional properties can degrade, leading to hard, jerky or inconsistent shifts.

Motor mounts, also called engine mounts, are structural components that connect the engine to the vehicle frame. They help stabilize the engine and absorb shocks and vibrations — allowing you to enjoy a peaceful ride.
So if one of your engine mounts is broken or badly worn out, you`ll feel the normal vibrations of the engine much more strongly. And you`ll notice it most at idle, when you don`t have all the other wonderful road noises and vibrations to distract you.

Im having a really hard time shifting into any gear other than 5th in my truck. I have to use alot of force to shift into gear.
ANSWER : You need to have the hydraulic clutch checked to see if it is disengaging the clutch as it should. The clutch is not disengaging and is the cause of the gears not being able to be shifted. You may have a bad clutch or clutch hydraulic system.

I have a 1998 ford ranger(AT) its shifting roughly, when i come to a stop, the truck wants to keep going, and as a result, the truck stalls out.
ANSWER : The torque converter clutch is not releasing as the transmission is shifting. Try pulling the fuse to the torque converter labeled as TCC and see if the symptoms change. If the vehicle stops acting up, then the torque converter clutch solenoid is active and not releasing. If the symptoms are the same, then the torque converter clutch is melted and needs replaced (torque converter replacement). If you need further assistance with your transmission shifting hash and stalling, then seek out a professional, such as one from Your Mechanic, to help you.

recently my Safari started "hesitating" or " shifting" roughly when shifting at low speeds. doesn’t do it all the time
ANSWER : Hi there. Many electronically controlled transmissions are computer controlled. With that said, the input signals for the engine can have a direct affect on the transmission behavior. Do no rely on scan tool recommendations because it is just that, a recommendation and not a diagnosis. Think of the scan tool you witnessed as a tool to sell parts, nothing more. A capable scan tool provides more than codes; it provides live data to the technician to aid in the diagnosis. When the computer sees an operating condition that is out of specification it sets a code; it does not know what or why, but only that it is out of spec. The code leads the technician to the system that has the fault; it does not diagnose it. Before you do anything, have the battery tested. A bad cell or low state of health can wreak havoc on an electrical system. I suggest having a qualified technician perform an inspection to avoid replacing unnecessary parts. Your Mechanic has several technicians available that can assist you with a check engine light inspection and a car is shifting hard inspection.

Transmission shift hard after high speed driving but shifts normal after engine is off for a while.
ANSWER : Hi there. Transmission fluid should be flushed every 50,000 miles to help avoid issues like you are experiencing. So, it’s probably a good idea to have your transmission fluid flushed and filter replaced, as the obstruction of debris or worn out fluid can cause the hard to shift issue you’re experiencing.

I parked my truck for 5-10 mins. Tried to turn it on, now it wont start, called a tow tow truck 15-20mins later my truck turned on
ANSWER : It is very likely that you have a powertrain control module failure. This can happen often on many GM vehicles. I would recommend having the powertrain control module tested and replaced as necessary in order to resolve this issue. After the powertrain control module is replaced, a reflash procedure will be required so that the vehicle can relearn all of its primary engine data. Once the reflash is completed, your vehicle should no longer have this issue.

I replaced my clutch and bleed my hydraulic clutch master cylinder. But when I put the truck in 2H and try to shift, I won’t shift.
ANSWER : Hi there. There seems to be an issue with the transfer case on your vehicle. The transfer case may have a bent fork or the shifter synchronizer has broken teeth. I recommend seeking out a professional, such as one from Your Mechanic, to help you diagnose your transfer case issue.

Won’t shift out of first unless you let go of gas but it will shift back down and never grab second
ANSWER : If you have all the drive shafts in the front and rear, then you will damage the transfer case or one of the axles if you drive the vehicle and engage the front end. The two different gear ratios will do this. As far as the transmission goes, you have a problem with the governor inside the transmission and may have bad second gear parts. Have a mechanic pressure test the transmission and diagnose the shifting issue for you.

My truck is shifting back and forth really hard
ANSWER : Hi there, thank you for your question. I am going to try to help you but I can’t promise anything. I had a truck do that once. I drove from Texas to Georgia towing a car, when I got to Atlanta, GA, when shifting into 2 or 3rd gear it would sounds like I hit something.
Sounds like something that you could be going through.

My first suggestion is to change your transmission fluid and filter, which fixed the problem I was having. I would also look at your engine mounts and transmission mounts.

You may also look at the linkage to your transmission and make sure it’s tight and properly connected. Also, you have a transmission input speed sensor and an output speed sensor, it sounds like one of these may be failing on your but you didn’t mention any lights on in your truck which would indicate that they are faulty. If this doesn’t work and you still find your transmission having the same problem, you may need to have your transmission rebuilt. Your best bet may to have a local professional diagnose the shifting problem firsthand and then proceed with proper repairs.
