Car is overheating

There has been a noise coming from under my hood, like something flapping. Today my car started to overheat. The coolant got up to 275 degrees. I would pull over and let it cool down for 15 minutes, then drive a mile or so and it happened again, over and over again. There was also a slight burning smell coming from the vents and the vents only blew cold air. If I wasn't able to pull over right away a light came on that said, "Check Charging System" and white smoke would come from the engine area.

My car has 98000 miles.
My car has an automatic transmission.

Car is overheating – 1999 Pontiac Grand Am

Alright, When I first bought the car the guy i bought it from told me there was 2 problems with the car. A camshaft sensor and a map sensor. I replaced both of them, and the car still didnt crank. I think I may have flooded the engine so i let it sit overnight. Went out the next morning and it crank right up. So I tried driving it down the road and it died every time i tried to give it a little to much gas. So i unplugged the mass airflow sensor now it runs perfectly. I drove for about ten minutes and noticed my temperature gauge started rising. I parked, looked at my reservoir tank and there

I was driving to work and the car overheated, opening the hood, it was steaming and coolant was spraying out of a hose near the alternator. The fan also doesn't seem to be turning on. What's the best course of action?
