Steering wheel squeak

When I turn the steering wheel at a normal rate or slowly it makes no noise. But when I turn the wheel really fast wen parking or k turning it makes a little squeak. It's not the engine or anything like that it's just the physical steering wheel. I don't know if it needs more lube or something but I'd like advice since it's really annoying

My car has 145000 miles.
My car has an automatic transmission.

Experienced mechanics share their insights in answering this question :
Hello.

If your steering wheel is producing a squeaking sound when rapidly turning I would first try to determine where the sound may be coming from. If it sounds like it may be coming from outside the vehicle, perhaps the engine bay then the noise could possibly be related to the steering components. If it sounds like something may need to be lubricated then the noise may be coming from somewhere on the steering column mechanism. If you can pinpoint at least a general area of where the sound may be coming from then spraying a bit of aerosol lubricant of your preferred brand could be enough to make the squeak go away. I would also, just as a precaution, check the vehicle’s power steering fluid level, as low or bad fluid can sometimes cause symptoms similar to those you are experiencing.

How to Identify and Fix Common car Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced mechanics :

Your car`s tie-rod ends, seals, ball joints and universal joints all need lubrication, and if they dry out, that could lead to a squeal, screeching or similar noise; you may even hear a grinding noise. Again, a technician or mechanic should be able to identify the problem and recommend a repair.
A creaking sound when turning your steering wheel may be nothing more than a sign that your suspension system needs lubrication, but it may be a sign of something more serious, including tie rod damage, power steering rack damage, or a failing strut/shock.
If you are hearing a squeaking sound from the rack and pinion, there is likely a restriction in your rack and pinion most likely due to a broken tooth from one of the gears.
Squealing noises

If there is a low amount of fluid present, air will start to circulate through the steering mechanism and make strange sounds when you turn the steering wheel. To prevent this, simply top up your fluid reservoir with power steering fluid. The noises should start to go away if there are no leaks.

You will need to flush the power steering fluid in order to get rid of the pesky air pockets if you find this is the cause of the noise. However, to avoid any more air getting trapped in the fresh fluid, ensure you check all the connections from the reservoir to the pump, tightening any loose ones.
Steering Wheel Housing

Sometimes this housing can rub against the interior trim and wear it down. When they rub against each other you might hear a squeak or squeal. If this is the case, then you`ll need to take your vehicle in for a repair, as you most likely won`t be able to fix this problem on your own.

Release the clip at the inner end of the lower gaiter. Pull the gaiter free of the rack housing and let all the oil drain out. Smear a little grease or gear oil inside the gaiter to make it easier to push on. Refit the gaiter and tighten the clip.
A steering wheel that is hard to turn, or very tight could be a sign that you`re having problems with your rack and pinion. If your gearbox builds up heat, or loses hydraulic pressure from lack of steering fluid, this can be another indicator.
When the power steering pump starts to die, it will let you know by making squealing sounds or low groaning noises when you turn the steering wheel.
Worn, damaged, or bent suspension parts, wheels, or wheel hub bearings, caused by an accident or hitting a pothole or curb, can cause tread cupping, feathering, or scalloped wear. Any of that can make tires squeak. A trip to your repair shop is best to diagnose and correct abnormal tire wear.
Squeaking Noises

Like the clunking, you`ll likely hear this when you`re going around curves in the road or over bumps. Squeaking noise may indicate that your ball joints have gotten dirt, grime, or other debris inside of them. While a rubber gasket seals the joints, this gasket can start to break down over time.

My steering wheel squeaks when turning left
ANSWER : The problem does need to be fixed. The steering wheel shaft may be binding in the steering column. You may also have another problem with the front end if the squeaking noise is not coming from the steering column. If the column is squeaking then you should have a mechanic come look at it and diagnose the issue. Only a qualified mechanic should inspect it since the air bags on the steering wheel may need to be removed to diagnose and complete the repairs. A certified mobile YourMechanic can come examine the problem at your home or office.

Steering wheel does not center
ANSWER : The problem to me sounds like you have worn out bushings that hold the power steering rack and pinion assembly. This is why your steering wheel gets off center in the direction of the turn. Have the steering inspected and the bushings replaced if they are bad. You should have no problems then.

steering wheel won’t unlock my key turns only to turn lights on but that’s it can’t unlock steering wheel to start the car what to
ANSWER : The steering lock may not be unlocking either due to a faulty ignition lock housing or more commonly as the cars age a faulty spring at the steering wheel on the under side of the column. If the ignition lock housing is the issue the housing can be replaced. It s a bit tricky as the mounting bolt has break off heads and generally need to be driven out with a punch. If the lock is not disengaging because of a faulty spring on the ignition lock many owners have had the spring removed by having it drilled out of the housing. However, removing the spring may permanently disable the steering lock. The last option would be to replace the steering column. You may want to enlist the help of a mechanic who can recommend the proper repair for your situation.

Problem with steering on one side only.
ANSWER : Hi there. The power steering system has a control valve that sends the fluid through the rack and pinion system. The valve maybe plugged up and causing the fluid to not return to the reservoir fast enough.

For the alignment issue, check all of the suspension and see what is loose or could be damaged. I recommend having an alignment performed on the vehicle after replacing any suspension or steering parts. If you need further assistance with your alignment, then seek out a professional, such as one from Your Mechanic, to help you.

Power steering stiff when cold
ANSWER : Hello. This can be a sign of a bad pump, but most of the time it is caused by contaminated fluid. If the fluid is old or has any moisture in it then this will occur. I usually flush out the power steering fluid first. I also check the belt. Once it has new fluid and if the belt is fine, then I double check the symptoms. If it continues, then I replace the pump. If you need to have this done, consider YourMechanic, as a certified mechanic can come to your home or office to diagnose the steering and move forward with the proper repairs.

Fan belt squeaks or a bearing squeaks especially when steering wheel is turned right
ANSWER : Squealing when turning the wheel can be caused by a few things. A worn belt can be the source, as can a failed belt tensioner not keeping the belt tight enough. Also, a failing water pump, alternator, or power steering pump bearing may be failing. The added load of turning the wheel can add load to a bearing and cause noise. The power steering pump itself may be the cause as well.

Have a certified technician look into the squealing when turning to isolate the exact cause.
