Replaced alternator, now aftermarket radio will not turn on.

Everything was working fine til Alternator froze up out of nowhere. Car sat for a couple weeks until I had the alternator rebuilt, then when I reinstalled it and got everything back in working order, I have no power in the aftermarket radio. Everything else seems to be working fine. All fuses are OK, I have swapped radios out with another vehicle to see if the radio itself was dead, but the radio is good and the problem lies within the car itself. Please help, I'll go crazy with no radio.

My car has 150000 miles.
My car has an automatic transmission.

Experienced mechanics share their insights in answering this question :
It sounds like you may some faulty wiring (to speakers or head unit), a bad fuse or a short somewhere in the circuit related to the stereo. Particularly, if the alternator was replaced as a result of the system being overcharged, this may have caused a fuse to pop. I would suggest having an expert from YourMechanic come to your location to diagnose and inspect your radio not working.

How to Identify and Fix Common car Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced mechanics :

Some of the most common issues include a blown fuse, bad or damaged wiring, and anti-theft modes that are often triggered when the battery dies. In order to track down the reason that your car radio won`t turn on, you`ll want to tackle each of these potential issues one at a time.
The most common reason for a car radio to stop working after the battery has gone completely dead is that the radio has an anti-theft “feature” that kicks in whenever battery power is removed. When that happens, all you have to do is enter the right car radio code, and you`re back in business.
Damaged Antenna or Tuner: If the car`s CD player still works, but the radio itself doesn`t, then the problem most likely lies with either the antenna or the tuner. A damaged antenna means that your radio isn`t able to receive signal from stations.
Turn your car on, but do not start the engine. Turn the radio off. Hold the radio power button down for a few minutes until it resets.
Not grounded or poorly connected circuits can cause an overflow of electric current. It can result in voltage surges and harm the electrical devices in your car. A properly grounded system helps stabilize the electric current to prevent any accidental situation.
You have to stop shut it off and start again. 5 people think this is helpful.
With today`s units, even going back 20 years or more, it is almost impossible to hook up an alternator wrong. Now if you replace the plug(s), you can wire that up wrong. It could lead anywhere from nothing at all happening all the way up to shorting out the whole system and melting stuff.
A Fuse Needs to be Replaced

If too much current is sent to the audio system, this fuse will blow out and disconnect the circuit to save the main radio. On newer models, there are a variety of fuses for the entertainment system.

What happens to the radio and other electronics if I have to disconnect the battery? If you have to disconnect the battery in your car, several important systems will lose power. You`ll need to reset the clock, for one thing. You`ll also need to enter the radio code for your audio system when you replace the battery.
A cracked touch screen is one of the main reasons that lead to an unresponsive car stereo screen. Check out for visible damages. If the screen has cracks or visible damage, you probably need to repair it. Sometimes, even minute scratches can lead to a faulty touch screen for your car stereo.
That means power cords may need replacing. Contacts can be bent or corroded. A dial cord can be broken or the gears jammed. The station indicator pointer may be misaligned.
There are a few different reasons for a car radio to stop working after the battery has gone completely dead. The first, and by far most common, is that the radio has an anti-theft “feature” that kicks in whenever battery power is removed.

Lights flickering, car turning off.
ANSWER : Hi there. Typically when you have an inconsistent power issue with accessories like a radio, lights and other components, it’s due to a loose ground wire or a faulty electrical relay. It could also be caused by battery cables that are worn out or an alternator connection. Depending on what type of vehicle you have and where you live, one of our mobile mechanics might be able to come to your location and complete an electrical problems inspection.

Engine turned off but inside of car still on, now engine won’t turn back on.
ANSWER : Hi there. The symptoms you’re describing with your boyfriend’s 2002 Grand Cherokee appear to be related to a broken or worn out ignition switch or relay. The ignition switch on the inside of the steering column is attached to multiple electronic connections that send signals to a relay box; which in turn, sends the signal to the individual components. The issue could be related to the ignition switch, the relay, or any of the components in between. If you want to have the fault pinpointed in person, I would have this starting issue inspected by a trained professional to ensure that the correct repair is made.

my 2012 kia sportage turns on just fine but occasionally the back up camera and radio panel will not turn on or turn off while dr
ANSWER : Hello, thank you for writing in. The intermittent nature of the issue can help us rule out some of the issues that would cause the UVO system to completely fail. You should start by checking the fuses, and make sure they are secure and clean. Secondly you will want to make sure the electrical connections to the system are clean, dry, and tight. After you rule out a wiring connection issue, you may want to try resetting the system with the driver controls. While it is not impossible that the two issues (the UVO and the starting issues) are related, we will want to treat them separately at first. The key will have issues being recognized if there is something blocking the signal. This may mean your cell phone is in the way of the signal, or that there is something blocking the signal at the other end. With a new fob battery, the signal strength should be improved. Try relocating the key fob from your pocket or bag when you push the start button. If this does not improve the issue, and resetting your UVO system does not stop the intermittent failure, then you will want to have the vehicle inspected by a technician.

When lights come on, radio goes off and visa versa
ANSWER : Hello. It sounds like the battery and/or alternator is causing the electrical problems that you are experiencing. The battery light coming on in the dashboard is an indication that there is a problem with the battery and low voltage may cause the vehicle to do some crazy things. I would recommend that you have a certified technician, like one from YourMechanic, come and complete an inspection of the electrical system in order to pinpoint the problem.

hi, my car had a starter replacement last month and the ignition won’t turn on until turning the key at least twice. Thank you!
ANSWER : Hi there. The hissing noise is your fuel pump priming; so this is normal. The ignition issue is sometimes caused by an internal component failure inside the ignition switch. However, it’s possible that the issue could be caused by an ignition relay that is slowly wearing out. I would recommend having a professional mechanic come to your location to complete a car is hard to start inspection; so they can hopefully replicate the symptoms and determine what needs to be repaired.

Dome lights will not turn on when door opened, radio will not turn off when car is off and door is opened.
ANSWER : Hello, thank you for writing in. The vehicle is likely having issues with the door switch which activates/shuts down both circuits. This is going to look like a peg in the door frame next to the hinge. The peg that is designed to make contact with the switch behind it may be at fault, or the switch itself may be faulty. It is best considering the circumstances that you replace the entire unit, as they are typically sold as an assembly. It is a rather straight forward repair if you are looking to do it yourself. Simply remove the old switch and reconnect it to the new one. Make sure to unplug the battery before hand. With that said, you can also contact our service department to schedule an appointment, and we can resolve the issue for you.

Car turns off. First it would turn off in reverse and when I would stop at a red light or slow down to make a turn.
ANSWER : Hi there. For the reverse stalling condition, check the Idle Air Control Valve and see if its plugged up. If a IAC valve is plugged up, an engine will stall out when going into gear and could cause issues when slowing down. For the steering and stalling issue, check the power steering fluid and see if its low. If the fluid is full, then the pressure control valve in the power steering is not releasing causing the pump to load up making the engine stall. Try turning the vehicle with the engine running and at a stopped location.

If the engine stalls out, then its the pressure control valve, but if it does not stall out, then there could be an issue with the transmission.

If you need further assistance with your engine stalling, then seek out a professional, such as one from Your Mechanic, to help you.
