In most speakers typically, the white wires, or wires that have an white marking are the wire that is positive. The completely black or unmarked wire is typically that wire which is the negative. However, this can differ based on the maker`s design. Some manufacturers have different markings too.
If you connect the positive wire to the negative part of the speaker, the sound wave reverses and travels as an inverted or reversed polarity. It creates destructive interfaces where sound waves often cancel each other and weaken the waves. Hence, some sound frequencies will not be heard in between the audio.
Good news is, with speakers it doesn`t really matter which one you choose as your positive and which as your negative, just so long as you are consistent. Ultimately, what you want is for the wire that connects to the red terminal on your Amp or Receiver to connect to the red terminal on your speaker.
If you have a wire where both sides are the same color, which is typically copper, the strand that has a grooved texture is the negative wire. Run your fingers along the wire to determine which side has the ribbing. The smooth wire is the positive wire.
If one of your speakers is wired up the wrong way it will be `out of phase`. In other words it will be moving `back and forth` while the other speaker is moving `forth and back`. Your ears may not notice it but this results in the stereo seperation and sound quality not being as good as they could be.
