Experienced mechanics share their insights in answering this question :
It could be that you haven’t gotten all of the air out of the system. Bleeding the clutch carefully may solve the problem. Or it may be that the Clutch Master Cylinder is also worn out. Often I just recommend replacing both to keep from having the hassle of one wearing out shortly after the other. The third possibility is that there is a problem with the clutch itself. An experienced technician can tell you pretty quickly where this problem lies. How to Identify and Fix Common car Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced mechanics :

If your transmission makes a grinding noise when you shift gears, you are likely experiencing friction between gears due to insufficient transmission fluid, worn transmission linkage, maladjusted binding, or a “dragging clutch.” If you hear grinding sounds when shifting from neutral to any gear, you may be dealing with …
When a grinding noise occurs with your transmission, it could mean a serious problem with your planetary gear system. Automatic transmissions depend on a planetary gear system to function probably, and if this system is allowed to fail, it can result in major damage throughout your transmission.
If you hear a whining or loud grinding sound coming from underneath your vehicle as you press the clutch pedal down to the floor, it may be caused by a throw out bearing that is damaged and need to be replaced.
If you hear a grinding noise when you turn the key or press the start button, you likely have a starter that needs replacement. One of the curiosities about a bad starter is that it can still start the engine.
To avoid this be sure to press down fully on the clutch pedal when changing gears and remember to shift smoothly and softly. Grinding your gears too much or trying to force a gear change could cause long-term damage to your car.
A healthy transmission will shift between gears smoothly and there won`t be any slippage. Low fluid levels can cause gears to miss, which will result in a grinding sensation.
You may have a problem with your gearbox if it starts making a sound you`ve never heard before, or if you hear clunking, whining, humming or buzzing.
A grinding or shuddering sensation is common when a transmission has trouble shifting fluidly. Sounds: Any grinding noises while shifting or knocking noises while in neutral are clear indications of a transmission in trouble.
If you notice your car making a grinding sound when it accelerates, your issue is likely to do with your transmission, a problem with your differential, a bad wheel bearing, a damaged CV joint, or a worn engine/motor mount.
If the pressure plate is in terrible shape, you will hear a creaking sound when you apply pressure to the clutch pedal. If this does not appear to be the case, you should inspect the clutch system`s spring arrangement.
What sound does a bad water pump make? Any high-pitched sound, or an increasingly loud whining sound as you accelerate is usually coming from the car water pump. The same sound happens when a belt is loose, or the bearings are bad. No matter which of these it is, getting your car to the mechanic is a must.
My Gears Are Clunking, Clicking Or Rattling

These noises usually mean that your gearbox or engine is on it`s way to failing, which can be catastrophic if you are driving at the time. For this reason, you should try and have the car collected rather than driving it to the garage.

Without getting majorly technical, grinding the gears starts to do small amounts of damage to the synchronizers and gears each time you do it. Usually the cause of the grinding is a failing clutch/throw-out bearing or simple impatience.
If the engine mounts wear out, they cannot stop your car`s engine from moving around while you`re driving. When you press down on the gas pedal, your engine can come into contact with other metal components under the hood. This can result in a rattling sound from under the hood any time you accelerate.

My manual car won’t go into gear, it turns on and the clutch goes down perfectly fine. It happened after my gears grinded, the car
ANSWER : If the clutch mechanism is releasing properly, and the shift linkage is not malfunctioning, your transmission will have to be removed from the vehicle and inspected. Once a transmission has been removed from a vehicle, if the problem is a broken or worn part or parts, and the transmission has 100,000 miles or more, the most cost effective approach is to just simply rebuild the whole transmission. There are transmission rebuild kits that are sold just for this purpose. Rebuilding a transmission is no big deal and is indeed easier in many respects than rebuilding an engine. You can rebuild your transmission right in your own garage. You can NOT rebuild an engine in your own garage due to the highly specialized, and extremely costly, machine shop equipment required. Occasionally, mobile mechanics will take on a transmission rebuild job especially as once the mechanic removes the transmission from the vehicle, it is just simply a modular unit that can be easily transported to a mechanic’s shop and rebuilt right there and then returned to your vehicle. Car struggles to go into the reverse gear and makes a clunking noise
ANSWER : Other consumers report the type of issue you have with various years and models of BMW but the reports are model specific. If you do a Google search ("difficulty getting reverse BMW "model, year") for your car, you can try the various strategies that I see published. I would suggest one, but I do not know which model you have. If none of those work out for you, that would point to there being a mechanical fault with the reverse synchronizer and related assembly in the transmission. That latter possibility being strongest of course if this difficulty in shifting is a "new" issue that you are experiencing. If you need help diagnosing the shifting issue, a certified professional from YourMechanic can come to your car’s location to inspect the vehicle and advise on the repair.

Gears get stuck and hearing some noise in the exhaust. Some running noise that doesnt sound normal when parking. 1996 Mazda Miata
ANSWER : Hi there – either your clutch hydraulics (master/slave cylinder) are weak, or something wasn’t done right with your clutch repair. It shouldn’t fail so quickly. Either the clutch is dragging because the clutch hydraulics are weak, or the pilot bearing wasn’t replaced when the clutch was repaired, and that bearing is now seizing. This has the same effect as a dragging clutch – hard to get in gear when you’re stopped. I recommend a clutch inspection by a mobile, professional mechanic, such as one from YourMechanic, who will come to your location, diagnose this problem, give you an accurate assessment of damage and cost estimate for repairs.

My clutch pedal is stuck to the floor. A while back I started hearing noise in my clutch when I pressed it. The car drive fine, th
ANSWER : Your vehicle uses a hydraulically operated clutch system. The first thing to do is check the fluid level in the master cylinder and check for leaks although leaks at the slave cylinder might not be apparent. Internal seal failures can cause the same problem that one might experience (i.e., no clutch operation) with visible leaks and a low fluid level. The noise may be due to a failed clutch release bearing. Due to the noise and the misoperation, if the slave cylinder turns out to be faulty, you will probably need a new clutch as well as hydraulic components. The cause of the fault that you are reporting can be pinpointed if you request a hydraulic clutch system diagnostic. If you request that diagnostic, the responding certified mechanic will get this diagnosed and let you know exactly what must be done. grinding noise while turning right or driving straight
ANSWER : Hello. If the noise is still there when the engine is off and if you are not turning the wheel, then it is typically either a failing bearing in the rear differential or it can be a failure in the transfer case if it is four wheel drive.

The transfer case is a very common failure on this vehicle. If it is two wheel drive then I typically start by draining the oil from the rear differential and inspecting the fluid for metal.

Any metal in the fluid indicates a bearing failure. If that is also fine, then it may be an issue within the transmission. It may be a failure in one of the thrust bearings. If you need to get this looked at, consider YourMechanic, as a certified mechanic can come to your home or office to diagnose your car’s grinding noise.
