How to Identify and Fix Common car Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced mechanics :

If you hear your vehicle squeal while accelerating, it could be related to your belt. In this case, you`d probably hear it while the vehicle is idle, too, or just turned on in colder weather. That means its worn or loose, and getting it fixed or replaced is always a good idea.
Squeals while turning could also be a suspension issue, like shocks, tie-rod ends, seals, ball joints, or universal joints that are in need of lubrication. There also could be something rubbing up against the interior trim of the vehicle, which a service center can check out for you.
Besides brakes squeaking, the most common squeaks are usually associated with your vehicle`s suspension. The squeaking suspension parts are often associated with a lack of lubrication when metal-on-metal wear is happening in connections such as the tie-rods, suspension joints and steering linkage.
Failing Water Pump Pulley: The most common cause of squealing or squeaking from the timing belt cover is the water pump pulley. If the bearings in the pulley are beginning to fail, they will make noise. Eventually, they`ll seize and the water pump will no longer operate, causing your engine to overheat.
If you notice a loud squeal when accelerating, especially if your car is just warming up, it could be that you have a loose or worn fan belt. Usually if your fan belts are worn, it could mean your timing belt needs to be replaced as well.
You may hear this sound while accelerating or right after starting when the engine is cold. A loose or worn fan belt, also known as the serpentine belt, is usually the cause. Replacing this belt or belt pulley should eliminate the sound. Consider having the timing belt checked as well.
Although there are a few causes of a squealing engine, one of the most common is a bad or failing serpentine belt. The serpentine belt – or drive belt, as its also known – plays a vital role in the engine. The belt drives many of the engine`s accessories, including the alternator and power steering pump.
Over time, the bearings that facilitate smooth spinning of the pulleys can wear out. If the pulley on your alternator or other accessory isn`t spinning freely, it can cause a squeaking noise as you drive along. The bearings in the pulley or the accessory itself will likely have to be replaced to stop the squeak.
A squeaky suspension system is not just embarrassing with those squeaking noises and grinding noises, but it is also dangerous and can be extremely difficult to diagnose and fix. Your vehicle`s weight is supported using coil springs, leaf springs or torsion bars.
There are several ways that squeaking brakes can be fixed. First, lotion or cream can be applied to the back of the brake pads. Sandpaper can also be used to sand off surface hardening on the brake pads. You may also want to consider replacing your current pads with those of a different material.
Your engine has a series of belts that help in various functions. They are one of the principal moving parts in your BMW engine and often cause noisy engines. When these belts wear out, they may make squealing sounds, especially when you start the engine after it has been shut off for a while.
Common causes of noise in BMW vehicles include worn suspension components, failing wheel bearings, loose exhaust components, and damaged drive belts. If the noise is accompanied by other symptoms such as vibrating, pulling to one side, or a change in handling, it may indicate a more serious problem.
There are many different causes for this sound in your BMW. These include dirty air filters, spark plugs that are old or worn out, or a clogged fuel filter. Larger issues could be an issue with the ignition or a clog in the catalytic converter.

What’s wrong with my manual Jeep if I’m driving at 5th gear but it sounds like I’m driving at 3rd or 4th?
ANSWER : Since the car is still new, the vehicle should be taken back to the dealer to be checked under warranty. You may need a repair or replacement of the engine assembly. The engine may have an imbalance causing the problem. There is a technical bulletin that may pertain to this vehicle and call for engine replacement. The TSB is 09-008-16 and is dated June 16, 2016.

The vehicle makes a humming/whining sound immediately after highway driving. After several minutes off highway, noise stops.
ANSWER : Hello, thank you for writing in. There are several issues that may cause these issues. You will want to start by making sure the brakes are not sticking. This can be done by raising the vehicle and checking for grinding or rubbing. Secondly, check the tires to make sure they are properly balanced, have good tread, and are properly inflated. These are the most common causes or tire noise. However if the issue goes deeper, you may want to inspect the wheel hubs and suspension. If you have more reason to believe the convertible top is to blame, check the seals and the latches first. When I drive mostly slow, but also when I’m going fast the front right tire has a bounce to it. New tire, what could it be?
ANSWER : Hello, thanks for writing in about your Chevrolet Monte Carlo. If the problem did not start until you installed the tires then the tire is most likely bad and has a flat spot. I suggest taking it back to the shop that installed it to have them recheck the tire. If they’re not able to pinpoint the issue, have a certified technician, like one from YourMechanic, diagnose the bouncing you’re experiencing for an accurate repair.

Squeaking metallic sound when turning
ANSWER : Thank you for the detailed information, it helps! The front driver side is where the majority of the steering components are located. Start by checking the power steering fluid. The best option is to raise the vehicle and inspect that side of the vehicle. You will want to look at the steering gear box, the linkage, and on down to the wheel hubs. This should include an inspection of the control arms, and other suspension components as well. Steering and suspension are very closely related and have adverse effects on each other. If you see any power steering fluid leaking, look to the steering gear for damages or a failed seal. The control arms also have CV joints that make similar noises to what you described. If those are cracked, leaking, or crushed they will need to be replaced.

Jeep Compass slow turn bogging down issue, TC/ABS/ESP/4WD.
ANSWER : Hi There,
What you are describing sounds like it may be related to a faulty transmission control module or potentially a bad transmission speed sensor. The speed sensor reads the rotational speed of the reluctor wheel, located within the transmission. The speed sensor also controls the anti-lock braking system. Driving with a bad speed sensor usually causes the ABS and potentially the traction control to malfunction. When this is not working properly, you may also notice the transmission hesitating to shift gears, erratic tachometer readings, the speedometer not working properly or the odometer not working properly. I would recommend having an expert from YourMechanic come to your location to diagnose and inspect your vehicle.

Car making a funny sound
ANSWER : Hi there. One of the most common sources of ’strange and consistent’ noises are the drive, serpentine or AC belts, pulley’s and tensioners that are loose or damaged. There are several of these on your Saturn, so it would probably be best to have a professional mechanic come to your location to complete a car is making a noise inspection to pinpoint the source of this noise and recommend the right repairs.

There’s a lawn mower sound coming from my engine when I’m driving
ANSWER : The noise could be due to an exhaust leak although it is also possible that a failed wheel bearing could cause enough "rumbling" to sound really loud. If you request a vehicle noise diagnostic the origin of the noise will be pinpointed and the certified mechanic will let you know of the required repair and the cost. The power steering leak is probably not related to the noise (unless the fluid level has fallen low enough to cause pump noise). Power steering leaks can be a fire hazard though (if the leaking fluid contacts a hot engine part) and so you should have the leak repaired. The service to request is a power steering system inspection – leak diagnostic. If you request these services, a certified Mechanic, dispatched by YourMechanic will come right to your location and get these problems fixed for you. If you have further questions or concerns, do not hesitate to re-contact YourMechanic as we are always here to help you.
