MOT Query

My MOT is due soon and my last year MOT advisory was "suspension component mounting prescribed area is corroded but considered excessive offside read [2.4.A.3]" if it fails on this year how much will I be looking at? It is a Ford KA 53 plate
My car has a manual transmission.
Experienced mechanics share their insights in answering this question :
You will need to have a body repair shop inspect the damaged suspension to see if it is repairable. I know in some countries you cannot do certain structural repairs, meaning the vehicle would have to be removed from the road. That being said, have a shop inspect it to see if it can be repaired and you’ll be able to get a quote from them once they’ve looked at it.

Broken or corroded coil springs are a really common reason for MOT failures, especially around our area where potholes are a big problem.
Car bodywork is always checked over during an MOT. Testers will be looking for signs of corrosion, sharp edges or obvious damage. However, a dent in the car door is not likely to let you down on test day – only if the dent prevents smooth opening and closing of the door will it be an issue.
If you find corrosion that seriously reduces the strength of a highly stressed component, you`ll need to fail the vehicle. You should also fail the vehicle if you find any structural weakness or holes caused by corrosion in a prescribed area, such as: steering. suspension.
Rust can also cause further issues, such as fuel leaks when it`s close to the fuel tank and even structural weakness. Your vehicle could fail its MOT if there is rust that affects the steering or the brakes, too.
When coil springs lose elasticity from exposure to rust and erosion from the road, the propensity for damage to your vehicle, you and other road users increases. For this reason, you should never drive with a broken coil spring. Instead, springs should be replaced as a matter of urgency.
Can I drive with a damaged shock absorber? Yes. Although it won`t be a comfortable journey. A broken shock absorber will result in your car bouncing around, as well as excessive rolling, squatting and diving.
Blown bulbs are the single biggest cause of failures, and are one of the simplest and cheapest to fix. Before the test, enroll a friend to help you check all of the lights are working – front, rear, indicators (including side repeaters), brake lights (including central repeaters), and fog lights front and back.
Your vehicle will fail if the test result lists `dangerous` or `major` problems with your vehicle. You might not be allowed to drive until you fix the problems. You might also get a list of `minor` or `advisory` problems to monitor or fix in the future.
Corrosion is a dangerous and extremely costly problem. Because of it, buildings and bridges can collapse, oil pipelines break, chemical plants leak, and bathrooms flood.
Corrosion of iron is a severe problem since it reduces the beneficial characteristics of iron, causing it to lose strength and eventually become unsuitable for use. As a result, tones of iron are damaged and wasted.
Scale Rust: Surface rust can progress to scale rust, which effects the vehicle`s body and can compromise its structure with time. Penetrating Rust: By this stage, the rust damage is severe enough that you see holes in the vehicle`s body, including parts composing the undercarriage and side panels.
Identify the important load bearing members and `prescribed areas` on a vehicle, then check if they are excessively corroded by: Visual inspection. Use finger and thumb pressure to assess the extent of the corrosion. If necessary, carefully scrape or lightly tap the affected areas with the corrosion assessment tool.
If the coil springs are corroded, they`ll probably snap soon. It`s some thick steel. It will take 2 or 3 decades before corrosion will get them destroyed. Coil springs usually snap due to material fatigue after long mileage or as an effect of overloading.
No, you should not drive with a broken coil spring. You should get it fixed as soon as possible. Some drivers may decide to drive on a broken spring coil in order to reach a garage or home. However, the ride is likely to be rough and controlling the car in an emergency will be more difficult.
Whether it is through consistent contact with water or any other harsh chemicals and substances, corrosion can severely decrease the life and load capacity of springs.

Failing the MOT

Hole in mufler making car sound louder. Is this immediate MOT fail?
ANSWER : Hi there. If the hole is just in the muffler then you only will need to replace that. The pipes will not need to be replaced unless they are showing signs of weakness. It is important that you get this taken care of as soon as possible as that leak can cause further issues. You can purchase a new muffler at the dealer or most exhaust shops will have replacements available at a much better price.

I have a query on used 2008 Land Rover Range Rover car maitenance cost and the common problems faced by it.
ANSWER : Like any other luxury brand, a Land Rover’s cost of maintenance is above average. This is due to parts being specialized, and a lack of aftermarket replacement part options; but also simply because of the name. Land Rovers are typically good vehicles in regards to reliability, however, there have been some electronic issues with sensors and wiring harnesses being damaged due to heat exposure. Overall, it’s a fairly good used vehicle to purchase; however, without being there to complete an inspection or looking at service and repair history of the vehicle, it’s hard to give you an accurate estimate of future repairs costs.

Mot a non-starting car
ANSWER : It’s very unlikely that your vehicle will pass a MOT inspection if it needs to be bump started. Having to rely on bump starting your car to get it running isn’t really considered safe, so it’s doubtful they will allow it to pass in that condition. I would suggest having the starter replaced by a qualified technician first, because even if you decide to sell the car, it will be worth much more in starting condition than not.

Will a bad steering rack or tie rod cause me to fail MOT?
ANSWER : Hello. Yes bad tie rods are a valid reason for a vehicle to fail MOT. The tie rods are part of the steering rack. The steering rack consist of two inner and two outer tie rods. Generally you will only have to replace the steering rack itself if it is leaking. Normally a worn tie rod would be the cause for steering rack failure, replacing the tie rod should enable you to pass MOT.
A thorough site to order parts from is rockauto.com. Though I suggest that you have a technician evaluate your vehicle to tell you which tie rods you exactly need before purchasing any parts.

Anti-roll bar advisor on MOT – 10 Months ago
ANSWER : Anti-roll bar links, also called stabilizer bar links, are generally fairly inexpensive to fix, though I can’t actually quote a price since you appear to be in Europe and our service only works for the United States. The cars we get here are mostly the same, but there are differences, and anti-roll bar links could be one of them. I would suggest contacting a qualified, trustworthy technician in your area to obtain an estimate for repair of the Golf you’re looking to buy.

Mileage query
ANSWER : There is the chance of human error while recording or reporting the information made available. When you have the actual car inspected you can ask the repair technician if anything seems as if it had been tampered with. Vehicles these days are designed to make it much more difficult to do and I’m sure there may just be a problem with the reporting. I suggest having a certified mechanic, like one YourMechanic, perform a pre-purchase inspection on the car to assess its overall condition and give you some peace of mind.
