Mileage query

Just did a hpi check on a car i was thinking of buying. The car is advertised for 61000 and the mileage check flagged up a discrepancy. The last record goes down a small amount rather than up. Does this look strange or could there be an explanation? Car had mot jan16 and miles where around 53000. Asked this question elsewhere and was told it looks like the car has been unused for almost a year. Where did they get that info. Im clueless

Experienced mechanics share their insights in answering this question :
There is the chance of human error while recording or reporting the information made available. When you have the actual car inspected you can ask the repair technician if anything seems as if it had been tampered with. Vehicles these days are designed to make it much more difficult to do and I’m sure there may just be a problem with the reporting. I suggest having a certified mechanic, like one YourMechanic, perform a pre-purchase inspection on the car to assess its overall condition and give you some peace of mind.

How to Identify and Fix Common car Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced mechanics :

When shopping for a used car, most drivers want a vehicle with less than 100,000 miles on the odometer. Taking into account that the average driver puts about 10,000-12,000 miles per year on their vehicle, there are some factors to consider.
On average, a car should have around 10,000 miles per year. So, for an easy way to calculate how many miles on a used car is too much, just multiply its age by 10,000. For example, a five-year-old car would ideally have 50,000 miles or less on its odometer.
The general rule, though, is that anything under 200 miles is acceptable for a new car. That allows enough capacity for transport from the shipping port or between dealerships if the car is sent to a new showroom. It`s also unlikely that the car would suffer any technical issues with fewer than 200 miles.
uncountable noun. The mileage of a vehicle is the number of miles that it can travel using one gallon or liter of fuel.
Is Mileage More Important Than Age? The short answer is no. There is no clear winner in the battle of mileage vs age. This is because, when shopping for a used car, you don`t just base your decision on either one.
The highest mileage car on record is Irv Gordon`s 1966 Volvo P1800S, with over 3 million miles.
Different insurance providers have their own idea of what constitutes low mileage. But 8,000-10,000 miles per year is considered fairly standard, so if you drive far less than that, you could be on track for discounted insurance.
This sounds like in 4-5 years time maximum we are all going to be chasing the same increasingly fewer low mileage examples or putting alternative engines in our cars! That or if you have a lowish mileage car use it very sparingly, unless your lucky enough to have the space and/or money to keep a few spares!
In general, most modern cars can cross 200,000 miles without any major issues, provided the vehicle is being well-maintained. Considering that an average person drives 10,000-20,000 miles per year, this will account for roughly 15 years of service. Here are some factors to consider when assessing used car mileage.
Can you reset the miles on a vehicle? No. Mileage is one of the primary factors during vehicle appraisal and determining its sale value. In fact, it`s illegal to alter or tamper with your car`s odometer, especially intending to deceive potential buyers or sellers about the car`s actual condition.
After consuming most of the fuel in the fuel tank calculate your car`s mileage by dividing the number of kilometres driven as per the trim meter by the quantity of the fuel consumed.
Essentially, Mileage refers to the number of kilometres that a vehicle can travel on one litre of petrol or diesel. The word Mileage has many alternatives, such as bike average, bike mileage, car average, gas mileage, etc. However, all these terms basically mean one and the same thing.
As such, the average mileage of a petrol car is typically slightly less than the overall car average (as this includes diesel models, too) – 6,000 to 7,000 miles per year is a good benchmark. Therefore, a petrol car that has travelled an average of 9,000 miles per year could be considered relatively high mileage.
What is a car`s average annual mileage? In the UK, the national average mileage was 6,800 miles (as of 2020).

I have a 2014 Dodge advenger se and dont know why i can not find the mileage gauge to find iut my mileage on my car . where is it
ANSWER : The odometer or mileage gauge is always located on the dashboard of the vehicle within the instrument cluster. If the odometer cannot be seen it is possible that the digital read out of the gauge has failed. The reason the gauge failed could be one of two reasons. Either the instrument cluster has a malfunction causing this to occur or the vehicle speed sensor has failed. If the vehicle speed sensor has failed, the speedometer would also be affected. I would recommend having your vehicle speed sensor checked for proper function by a certified technician. Consider YourMechanic as this service can be done at your home or office.

Bad gas mileage on the highway
ANSWER : There are many things that can cause the fuel mileage to go down or be lower than what others are getting. The most important thing is to not use performance parts like filters or sensors. These only increase the power and use more gas. Also, put the tires to their most optimal pressure settings. Make sure all tune-up parts are new like the plugs, filters, wires, and belts. Then practice good driving habits like coasting longer before stoping, accelerating slower, and braking slower. Not speeding will also save fuel. Do not use A/C unless it is needed. All these things will help. Finally, you can have the computer scanned for any pre-existing problems that may affect fuel mileage.

Low gas mileage on 1997 GMC K1500 Suburban V8-5.7L
ANSWER : Hello. We will be happy to help with your 1997 GMC K1500 Suburban. There’s likely a combination of reasons as to why your MPG has so greatly declined. I suggest that you have a technician inspect the following items and perform the needed repairs.

Flush out the fuel injectors using an injector flush kit, replace your fuel filter, inspect the spark plugs and wires (and replace if necessary), check the air filter (replace if found dirty). Cleaning a dirty mass airflow sensor will help increase the MPG as well. I also suggest that you check the pressure and condition of the tires. Low air pressure or bad tires will decrease in MPG, too. If you would like to have this inspected by a professional, a qualified technician from YourMechanic can come to your car’s location to diagnose your mileage issue and let you know what should be done.

I removed then reinstalled cluster and mileage changed.
ANSWER : The vehicles body control module should have the correct mileage stored and you will have to bring the vehicle to the dealer to have the instrument cluster reprogrammed to read the correct mileage. If the body control module has lost its programming and the instrument cluster cannot be programmed, special permissions will be required to reset the odometer to zero and a notice will have to be attached to the vehicle stating the last known mileage and the technician who set the odometer back to zero and this label may not ever be tampered with under federal regulation.

When I drive the mileage on my car does not change
ANSWER : Hi There,
This could be related to a couple of possibilities. The [instrument voltage regulator]((https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/instrument-voltage-regulator-replacement) regulates the voltage supplied to the various gauges in your vehicle’s dash. When this is not working properly, this may cause the gauges in your dash to dim or flicker erratically or in some cases provide false readings. This may also be caused by a faulty instrument gauge cluster.

This may also be caused by a faulty transmission speed sensor. The speed sensor reads the rotational speed of the reluctor wheel, located within the transmission. The speed sensor also controls the anti-lock braking system. Driving with a bad speed sensor usually causes the ABS to malfunction and can lead to loss of braking power and/or an accident. When this is not working properly, you may also notice the transmission hesitating to shift gears, erratic tachometer readings, the speedometer not working properly or the odometer not working properly. I would recommend having an expert from YourMechanic come to your location to diagnose and inspect your vehicle.

Do cold air intakes make d difference in mileage on pick up trucks?
ANSWER : Hello,
Yes, a cold air intake will help to increase fuel mileage to the extent that it is delivering cooler air into the motor than the normal stock intake would be. In general, air cleaners and breathers do not affect fuel economy all that much, however they can help slightly. Other things to consider when wanting to increase fuel economy are: tires and tire pressure, fuel type, exhaust type (switching to a higher flow exhaust), fuel programmers, fluid upgrades (use a lightest oil possible for your climate and conditions), electric fan conversion (this will help improve fuel economy during freeway cruising – be sure that the electric fan can effectively keep the motor cool) and ignition upgrades. Be sure when making any of these types of modifications that they are appropriate for your particular application as the results will vary according to engine model, climate and conditions.
