hello, i have 1997 gmc safari awd. it recently shut down on the highway and wouldnt start. pulled DTC p0108 MAP sensor high voltage. replaced MAP on side of road with another used sensor, no start. towed home, checked sensor KOEO and i have good 5 volt supply and good ground, and 2.7 volts signal. changed sensor to other used sensor, almost identical readings. i should have high 4s for the signal with KOEO, correct? are both sensors bad or is it another problem?

My car has 117000 miles.
My car has an automatic transmission.

Experienced mechanics share their insights in answering this question :
Hi there. P0108 is the code for a problem with the MAP electrical circuit sensor having too high voltage input to the Engine Control Unit (ECU). This means that the voltage input to the ECU is too high and that it is not in the correct range for proper engine operation to work with inputs from the Mass Air Flow Sensor (MAF) and Throttle Position Switch (TPS). In most cases, the code is triggered by a failure of the MAP sensor or the electrical harness connected to the MAP and the ECU. Most mechanics do not consider the electrical harness as a possible source. You should read this article to learn more about this code and the possible solutions.

My car shut off while at a stoplight. I got it started only for it to shut off agin. It starts then shuts off.
ANSWER : Hello, thank you for writing in. The vehicle is stalling due to an electrical issue (typically pertaining to power supply or a sensor), a lack of fuel, or a failure with the ignition (spark) system. You will want to start by scanning the vehicle for diagnostic troubleshooting codes. Use any information found there to help guide you to the system or component that is failing. Without that information, you will want to test the fuel pump, ignition cables, spark plugs, and alternator function. Further testing may need to be done based on those results. Map sensor car won’t start up good ?
ANSWER : Your MAP sensor is an important input for your computer. It helps determine the load on the engine to calculate the correct amount of fuel to inject. It sometimes takes a few seconds for the vehicle to realize that the sensor is not producing a good signal.

At that point, it will use other methods to determine the fuel rate, such as pre-programmed fuel maps, throttle position, etc. I would suggest replacing the MAP sensor and retesting. If you would like to have it checked first, a certified technician from YourMechanic will be able to scan your vehicle and test components to determine the root cause of your starting issue before making a repair.

Fuel pump engages. Batery good, alternator good volts, jump start helps when wont start. Temp does not matter. Intermittent?
ANSWER : Hello. Thank you for writing in. There are several reasons your vehicle may only start when jump starting. The first and most common is a build up of resistance that is causing you to need a boost of voltage to get the engine started. This may be due to poor battery cables, a bad ground connection, a poor starter solenoid, and a couple of other issues. The first thing you want to do is perform a visual inspection of the starting system. Make sure there is no corrosion build up in the battery cables. You can also check the resistance across these wires and make sure you have a solid connection between components. You then want to make sure the starter solenoid is doing its job. It is responsible for taking the small amount of electricity sent by the ignition and turning it into a huge electrical charge that is strong enough to push over the engine with the help of some gear ratios in its favor. Do some more testing, and stick to the basics before assuming its something seriously complicated.

2005 Chrysler 300C changed battery and alternator. Car started, ran, and then battery light came on. Shut car off and wouldn’t start.
ANSWER : Hi. There is a couple of things that could be wrong here. The battery or alternator that was just installed could be defective. Theses parts need to be tested for proper operation. There also could be a fuse, fusible link, or wiring for the battery or charging system that is blown or broken causing the battery light to come on.

The codes that you have will cause the car to shut down, run rough, or not start at all. The crankshaft sensor and camshaft sensor should be replaced. I suggest having a certified technician from YourMechanic come diagnose the charging system and check engine codes to help you proceed with correct repairs.

Vehicle won’t start, once it’s jump started it only stays running until you turn it off, then it work start again without jumping.
ANSWER : Hi there. There could be two problems here. It is possible that your battery is bad and will not take a charge from your alternator while driving. In that case every time you shut your car off you will not have enough juice to start it again. Inspect your battery – it should have at least 12.5 to 13 volts to start your car, if it doesn’t you will need to replace the battery. The second problem could be that your alternator is bad and not charging your battery, in this case you will need to replace your alternator. Both the battery and the alternator can be tested in your car. If you would like to have the car checked for you, a certified professional from YourMechanic can come to your car’s location to diagnose the starting problem and proceed with repairs.

What do I have to replace when the oil pump belt cuts and affects starting sensor?
ANSWER : Hi there. If you are referring to the timing belt to your engine, then I recommend replacing the belt if its cut and coming apart to prevent the engine from bending any valve and damaging the pistons. If you are referring to the serpentine drive belt, then I recommend replacing the belt if its cut and coming apart to prevent any accessories from stop working. If you need further assistance with your timing belt or serpentine belt issue, then seek out a professional, such as one from Your Mechanic, to help you.

2006 330i no start, car died on highway
ANSWER : Hi There,
The codes related to the O2 sensors (P0139 and P0159) relate to potentially a leaking fuel injector or too much fuel in the exhaust stream as the fuel is cut off when decelerating. This in effect, causes the moor to essentially choke on its own excess fuel that it is unable to burn efficiently, which is what causes the rough running condition.

The other codes related to the crankshaft and camshaft sensors indicate a spark or timing problem that results when either of these sensors is faulty or does not have a proper connection. When this happens, this results in misfires and ignition problems, which can also cause very rough running conditions or stalling. I would recommend having an expert from Your Mechanic come to your location to diagnose and inspect your vehicle.
