Defrost button wont come on. Control power button doesnt work.

Defrost button doesn't light up or work. The power control button doesn't work either, won't turn functions off. The air conditioning buttons work, the mix for defrost and floor work. The air recirculation button works. It won't switch over to just defrost, and the power control button not working

My car has 108000 miles.
My car has an automatic transmission.

Experienced mechanics share their insights in answering this question :
It seems like the defrost of the vehicle has an issue. There are several possibilities that could cause this. The control unit for the climate control system could be malfunctioning. The fuse for the rear defrost could be blown due to some unknown reason. The windshield itself could be damaged and lost connection somehow. I would recommend having a qualified professional who is proficcient in electrical diagnosis inspect your vehicle with a wiring diagram. This will help to determine where the fault in the defrost system is located. Once the issue is found, I would recommend having the issue resolved as soon as possible to prevent any safety issues that could result from lack of clear vision through the rear window.

How to Identify and Fix Common car Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced mechanics :

When a front defroster stops working, it`s usually a faulty switch or blend door if air comes out of the other vents or a bad blower motor if no air comes out of the vents.
Reasons your rear defroster doesn`t work. While front defroster problems are often caused by issues with the cooling or HVAC systems, a problem with your rear defroster can usually be traced to a faulty electrical component. This could be: The rear defroster fuse, switch, relay and wiring.
Make sure the rear defroster switch and the ignition key are turned on. Disconnect both wires from either side of the defroster grid and touch one end of your tester to each wire. If the light comes on, you have power. If it doesn`t, check for a bad fuse and replace it if necessary.
If the unit is not defrosting, ice can build up in a hurry. Defrost issues can be caused by faulty relays, controls, or sensors. There could also be a problem with the reverse valve that switches the unit from heat to air conditioning mode.
Defrost Heater: This mechanism provides the heat that defrosts the evaporator coils. If it`s malfunctioning, frost will continue to accumulate on the coils and in the freezer. If the heater shows a lack of continuity with multimeter testing, it needs to be replaced.
The Defrost problem can be confirmed by removing food from the freezer. Remove the freezer interior panels that cover the cooling coils. A defrost problem is confirmed if the cooling coils are covered with ice.
The defrost cycle is activated when the temperature of the outdoor coil drops below 32 degrees. At this temperature, frost can form on the coil, which can cause damage if it builds up. This is where the defrost cycle comes in. Your heat pump will switch to cooling mode to warm up the coil and melt the ice.
There is a special thermostat or sensor of the defrost cycle system, often referred to as the frost thermostat. It is located on the bottom of the outdoor coil where it can detect the temperature of the coil.
It is a device that removes the condensed water droplets or ice from the main windscreen, side windows and rear windscreen of a vehicle. Its main function is to clear the windscreen of condensed water thereby improving visibility. This device is also known as `defroster` or `demister`.
If you don`t have a defrost button, set your microwave to cook at 20-30 percent of its full power. Set the cooking timer. Keep in mind that most meats, such as chicken, beef or pork must defrost for 8 – 10 minutes per pound.

My hazard lights wont shut off. The button wires have been cut for awhile but now the hazards won’t shut off and I pulled the fuse to no avail.
ANSWER : Hi there. It sounds like you’re getting feedback through the circuits; this is when a normally off circuit gets power or ground from another circuit through an open or short. You’ll need a digital volt/ohm meter, the electrical wiring diagram, and some time to check this. You’ll need to find a possible common point on the diagram where these circuits could be provided either a power source or ground that is keeping the components operating. I strongly suggest acquiring a qualified technician to perform an inspection to avoid replacing unnecessary parts. YourMechanic has several available technicians that can assist you with an electrical problems inspection.

After a bout of wet weather, the climate control buttons in my car will not work.
ANSWER : Hey there. Blinking lights indicates there is a code stored. This is good news because it will help diagnose the problem. If all the lights blink, then the climate control unit will need to be put into self diagnostic mode. A technician grade scanner can often retrieve these codes as well, but there is a procedure to retrieve the codes.

If only the A/C light is flashing, then this indicates your A/C system is low on refrigerant. At least it thinks it is. Either way, you need to have the A/C system serviced to know for sure.

Everything you have stated points toward the need for using the self diagnostic, but the self diagnostic could be needed because the blower motor has failed and the system has detected this. It may be a good idea to test it. This will require a wiring diagram, a test light and knowledge of electricity. Either way, you need access to quality information in the form of computer access or a repair manual. If you should need further help, I recommend having the AC system diagnosed by a professional to verify the correct repairs that need to be done.

Heating works only on defrost and works only at high speed
ANSWER : A car that old is not going to have self diagnostics in the heat AC system. So you don’t need to bother with checking codes. Most cars use engine vacuum to control the heater flaps, and the defrost is the default position, so first you need to check all the vacuum hoses under the hood. find a vacuum diagram and check every hose. One vacuum line could make a big difference. As for the fan speeds, you probably need a blower resistor. High speed comes through the relay, all the other speeds come through the resistor. The high pitched squeal might be the fan motor itself. All this and more could be easily addressed by contacting your mechanic. They can send a technician to your home or office to check out your climate control and make recommendations as to what you should do next.

While driving, hit start/stop button, instead of radio button
ANSWER : Not that I can find. The Start/Stop button, and how long it must be held to turn the engine off in an emergency is a hot topic. Requiring the driver to hold this button down for 3 seconds could be an eternity in a burning fire scenario. Turning the engine off on the slightest touch may cause the vehicle to stop in traffic when you actually just intended to adjust the radio as you describe. You may want to get in touch with a local Lexus or Toyota representative so that you voice this displeasure.

My AC is only blowing through the defrost vent and rear defrost doesn’t work.
ANSWER : Hi there. The blend doors on your vehicle are operated by a vacuum hose. Check the vacuum lines to the engine and see if any of them are broken, has a hole, or is disconnected. Check the vacuum hose on the blend door and see if it has came off or broke. For the rear defroster, check the switch to the defroster and make sure that it has power to it and power coming out. If there is no power to the switch, then check the fuses and see if any of them are blown. The rear defroster has a blend door that opens and closes that is electronically. If the fuse is blown, either the switch has failed or the blend door motor has failed. If you need further assistance with your vehicle, then seek out a professional, such as one from Your Mechanic, to help you with your defroster vents not blowing air.

Radio only works through steering wheel controls
ANSWER : It sounds like the radio unit in your vehicle may have partially failed to where the controls no longer work. I would recommend having your radio inspected by a qualified professional. This inspection may involve the removal of the radio and some sort of bench testing with a high tech scan tool or machine of some kind that is used specifically for the testing of automotive radio equipment. This electrical inspection may also include using a digital multimeter to test certain wires that connect to your radio that may control the use of the buttons on the face of the radio. If the inspection shows that your radio controls have shorted out, replace the radio if necessary to regain this function in your vehicle.

Lock / unlock buttons not working on key fob.
ANSWER : The key fob may have some broken buttons or the battery could be dying out causing the buttons to not function. If the key fob has been dropped, a contact point inside the electronics on the key fob could have been broken causing the buttons to fail and short out with each other. In that case, I suggest replacing the key fob remote. If you need further assistance with your key fob not working, then seek out a professional, such as one from Your Mechanic, to help you.
