Clicking noise from steering wheel

I get a clicking noise that sounds like plastic on plastic when I turn my wheel from straight to about 11 o'clock. It is intermittent. There are also two other distinct sounds: one that sounds like a low clunk inside the cabin by the firewall where the coupling shaft is. And then another louder clunk when I make really wide turns or turns over bumps (it may be the lower shaft?). The interior steering wheel click is really annoying. I took off the housing behind the wheel and tried to see if anything was loose but everything looks good. What else could it be?

Hello, thanks for writing in. Most of the time this clicking noise is from the column covers rubbing on the steering wheel. I usually remove the covers and drive the vehicle to see if it goes away. If it does then the cover is the issue and needs to be replaced or trimmed down to prevent it from happening further. If the problem persists then most of the time the problem is the result of a bad cancellation cam in the column. As for the knocking noise this is almost always cause by the intermediate steering shaft. This is a common failure and will cause this noise. I usually remove the shaft and check it for looseness. If it is fine then the noise may be coming from the steering gear but that is not as common. What you are describing sounds like a wheel bearing that may be starting to fail. If the sounds is more pronounced when turning specific ways, this indicates that it is usually the opposite wheel bearing of the way you are turning (i.e. that bearing is taking on more of a load and thus making the noise). A wheel bearing will usually fail due to pitting or small damage on the surface of the rollers or the bearing race. Both the surface of the rollers and the race is precision machined to tight tolerances and highly polished to allow the rollers to pass easily over the race with the addition of bearing grease for lubrication and cooling. Over time the bearing will wear slightly, allowing microscopic pieces of metal into the grease. These microscopic pieces of metal, as well as any contamination that gets into the bearing, will wear away at the highly polished surfaces causing pitting and deformation. Since so much weight is riding on your wheel bearings, and so much load is put on them in corners, even the smallest amount of surface damage to your bearing can cause a lot of noise. Sometimes, in such a circumstance, you can see that the rubber outboard boot is actually torn and leaking grease. If you change the axle, be sure to install a new rubber seal on the transmission output side so that you do not have transmission fluid leaks with the new axle (a common mistake is to overlook that seal; if an old, left-in-place seal leaks after the axle is put in the job has to be done all over again).
