Broken wheel bearing

Mt drivers side front wheel bearing is broken but I have to move the car or its towed. Canbi drivevit less thanba half mile?
My car's transmission is unknown to me.
Experienced mechanics share their insights in answering this question :
If the bearing is broken then you may do more damage to other components if you drive it farther. The tow truck may cost less than any additional damages that accumulate if you continue to drive it. It would be safer towing it also. After getting to a safe location, I suggest having a technician, such as one from YourMechanic, replace your wheel bearing for you at the car’s location.

Q: Is it safe to drive with a bad wheel bearing? A: No. It can, in fact, be very dangerous to drive if one of your bearings is worn out, especially since it may cause the wheel to stop while driving. Additionally, a damaged wheel bearing puts a lot of stress on the hub, the CV joint, and the transmission itself.
If your wheel bearing fails, it can cause the wheel to stop while you are driving or possibly even to fall off. At the very least, before a wheel falls off, a failed wheel bearing can/will cause significant damage to your vehicle, so it`s very important to keep an eye on these and keep them maintained.
Once you notice any sign indicating a bad wheel bearing, avoid exceeding 500 miles with that issue. A failing wheel bearing will increase your difficulty in driving. But with a high-quality wheel bearing, you can drive for another 1000 miles as per the estimate.
If the bearing noise has been growing gradually, then without suggesting it is “okay” to drive 200 miles, the noise may just grow worse over that distance. If the bearing noise appeared out of nowhere, then that suggests an immediate failure potential and should be changed BEFORE a 200 mile drive.
The bearings won`t allow the wheel to turn freely, which exacerbates the problem. It also puts stress and strain on the hub, the CV joint, the axle, and the transmission. Ultimate damage: If you don`t replace a damaged wheel bearing before it fails completely, the wheel will completely seize up.
One of the most alarming and noticeable signs of bad wheel bearings are brake issues, which can occur when your wheel bearings are worn down and loose in the housing. You may notice inefficient braking on the road, brake “slips,” or uneven wear on your brake pads.
While you are able to drive up to 1,000 miles if you have one, you should have a bad wheel bearing replaced or fixed in the very near future. Once repairable, the damage becomes more serious and impossible to repair if you continue driving with bad wheel bearings.
Bad wheel bearings can damage things like your hub, the vehicle`s constant velocity joint (CV joint), or the automatic transmission.
Since wheel bearings are what your tires spin on, they can reduce your acceleration as they fail. Due to poor lubrication or rust, wheel bearings can start to perform worse, and they won`t let your vehicle acceleration freely.
Driving with worn wheel bearings can cause serious damage to your drive-axle and steering assembly and ultimately be a major safety hazard. Driving on a bad wheel bearing puts stress on the hub and CV joint, brake system components, and ultimately on the transmission itself.
Luckily, bearings aren`t difficult to replace, and most modern vehicles use either bolt-in or pressed-in bearings. With the right tools, you can perform this replacement by yourself: Park your car on a safe, flat surface and secure the wheels you aren`t working on with wheel chocks.
In the worst-case scenario, hitting a pothole can result in a tire blowout or bent wheel. But even in non-catastrophic impacts add up over time and have a negative impact on your vehicle: Wheel misalignment (causing premature tire wear) Wear/damage to shocks and struts and cv axles.
If a wheel bearing goes bad, more friction will be placed on the wheel, and the wheel will start to wobble. It is not safe to drive with a missing wheel bearing. Driving without a wheel bearing is dangerous, so if you experience any of the 3 signs below, contact a mechanic as soon as possible.
If the torque applied was too high the bearings can be put into excessive pre-load, or if the torque was too low, the bearings can have excessive endplay. Both of which could affect fuel economy and the performance of the bearings over time.
If it gets too hot, or there`s too much debris in the bearings, they could start to lock up or grind. If the bearings lock up, the wheel could lock up.
Heat. If the car wheel bearing is worn out, therefore, friction will cause a very intense heat that will be flagrant when we drive our car to a stop.
The most common failure pattern for wheel bearings is for those on the passenger side of the vehicle to fail first. The passenger side bearings are exposed to the most standing water in the gutter.
Quick Answer: Expect 30 Minutes to an Hour, but It Depends

This makes it difficult to apply a catch-all time estimate, but you can tend to expect about 30 minutes to an hour and a half for front bearings and 15 to 45 minutes for rear wheel bearings.

There`s nothing to “fix”. Bearings are essentially sealed units.

I hear an abnormal noise from front driver’s side wheel. It sounds like a wheel bearing but not sure.
ANSWER : A wheel bearing noise can be different between vehicles as some designs may vary a little. The most common is a roaring noise that may change when going around turns. It may be louder going in one direction or the other or just make a loud noise all of the time. The wheel hub presses into the wheel bearing. The hub is where the studs are for the wheel to be bolted onto the steering knuckle and the bearing provides the support for the wheel and weight of the vehicle. Consider hiring an experienced technician like one from YourMechanic who can come out and take a closer look at your wheel bearing noise to offer a more personal diagnosis.

Can front wheel drive car engine power rear wheel drive
ANSWER : Anything is possible with enough engineering. The changes you are looking at would take major structural changes and would definitely not be an easy job. You could possibly consult a manufacturing engineer to get more details on how this could actually be carried out and whether it would be feasible.

Will a bad wheel bearing damage the CV joints, or will bad CV joints damage the wheel bearing? Honda Accord lax 2006
ANSWER : Any bad part in the drive train can put additional stress on other parts. I could probably draw a line from a bad wheel bearing to a bad CV joint. Not so much the other way. However, it might seem that way because the parts have a similar life span. Once one part fails, the others may come soon after. If your car really only has 45000 miles it seems a little soon for either one to be failing unless you are living and driving in bad northern winters. If your car is making sounds in either the CV or the wheel bearings, you can have it checked out at your convenience by contacting Your Mechanic. They can send a technician to your home or office to check out your Honda and tell you what it may need.

What name is given to the bearing after the wheel bearing on a 2006 Pontiac Torrent
ANSWER : In your application, the passenger side CV axle does not use a carrier (center support) bearing. The noise you are describing could be due to failure of the same wheel bearing (not a rare occurrence, please read below), or the noise could be due to a tire defect, brake problem, or axle or transmission issue. If you request a diagnostic, the cause will be pinpointed. If it were to turn out that the noise is from the wheel bearing that you replaced 8-9 months ago, replacement bearings will fail if the axle nut is over tightened when the vehicle is re-assembled. Unfortunately, that is a common problem because people do not read the instructions in the Factory Service Manual. The nut that holds the CV axle to the hub can ONLY be tightened with a calibrated torque wrench and the nut has to be tightened only to exact value published in the Factory Service Manual. Shops and amateurs will sometimes use an air tool or an ordinary wrench, contrary to the explicit instructions, and the consequence is the axle nut is overtightened and the bearing is guaranteed to fail prematurely. The other common cause of premature bearing failure is the use of cheap aftermarket bearings (or hub assemblies). If you use the OEM (dealer supplied) bearing or a recognizable, reputable vendor such as SKF you will be better off. To get the bearing inspected, and replaced if failed, please request hub assembly inspection/replacement. If you have further questions or concerns, do not hesitate to re-contact YourMechanic as we are always here to help you.

Can a poorly installed wheel bearing cause extensive damage when driven on?
ANSWER : Hi there:

It’s highly unlikely that the installation of a wheel bearing causes mechanical damage that the mechanic has listed above. Typically those components (Axle shaft leaking, steering knuckle, lower ball joint, lower control arm, front strut) are not touched during a wheel bearing replacement. However, it is very possible that the diagnosis of damage due to accident is simply wear and tear, which tends to happen on Toyota Prius’ quite often and usually around 50,000 miles.

Why is my wheel bearing always acting up?
ANSWER : Greetings and thank you for writing in with this question! If the vehicle is lifted or has larger-than-stock tires, this may be the cause of the wheel bearing problem. Non-stock ride height and custom suspension parts cause undue stress on the wheel hubs and bearings. Additional possibilities include water and/or mud intrusion in the hub/bearing assembly. You may address your situation by replacing the front hubs and bearings with aftermarket units. Scheduling an appointment to diagnose the situation and installation is important, as improper installation can cause these failures as well.
