2008 Hyundai Sonata GLS 4 cyl. 108,000 miles, code P0011 (Cam position, Actuator A-Bank I, Timing over-advance)

I have a 2008 Hyundai Sonata GLS 4 cyl. 108,000 miles.
Changed oil at 7/29/2015 at 86,664M, 12/22/15 at 95,000M. 04/23/2016 at 101,423M, 09/13/2016 at 107,693M.

About a year and a half ago,or earlier, the CEL came on with a P0011 scanner code. I turned the CEL off, it did not come back. I looked up the code, but did not do anything about it.
01/12/2016, the light and the code P0011 came back on.Turned the engine light off, and came back on 01/23/2016. I looked up to see the P0011 code again, and what might be the problem, and one of the many things that could be wrong was a bad engine oil, b

Experienced mechanics share their insights in answering this question :
Hello, thanks for writing in. I’d be happy to provide my insight. The cam position actuator is an engine component that is responsible for phasing the camshafts and altering the timing. It works using oil pressure, so you are good to change the oil regularly. There are cases, however, where the camshaft phasers or solenoids become stuck, or simply stop working and need to be replaced. In this instance the phaser or solenoid may be getting stuck in the an over advanced position, stetting of the light. If the light comes back on I would take a look at the cam position solenoids and phasers.

How to Identify and Fix Common car Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced mechanics :

There are some serious problems with the 2008 Sonata including engine failures, excessive brake wear, and broken door handles. Seized engines are the most common and serious problem with the Sonata, happening at around 100,000 miles. The only way to fix the problem is to replace the engine, costing over $4,000.
How serious is the P0011 engine code? If you`re seeing engine code P0011, stop driving your vehicle immediately. A malfunction of your intake camshaft can lead to serious engine damage, especially if you keep driving around after your Service Engine Soon Light comes on.
These are the most likely causes: The camshaft timing is off. The valve control solenoid is stuck open. The valve control solenoid system has faulty or damaged wiring.
You can drive with code P0011, but we won`t recommend that. Avoid driving your car until performing the essential repairs, as the code can cause severe damage to your car`s engine parts. Ignoring the P0011 error code in your car will result in several drivability issues.
Timewise and distances, a Hyundai Sonata can last a driver for up to 250,000 miles or up to 17 years on average. If you drive less than the average 15,000 miles annually, then your Sonata may last you longer.

Complaint issues range from problems with the electrical system, wheels and tires, and brakes that malfunction, to sunroofs that explode unexpectedly.

A P0340 error code indicates a problem with the Camshaft Position Sensor A circuit. It`s possible that the wires leading to the camshaft position sensor are faulty, or that the sensor itself has failed. This error code isn`t a sign of bad camshaft timing.
A failing camshaft position sensor begins losing its ability to quickly transfer data. Mismatched fuel delivery and ignition timing, even if off by a few milliseconds, will cause your vehicle to sputter, accelerate poorly, lack power, stall or even shut off.
A P0011 code indicates that the intake camshaft is consistently running more advanced timing than the engine computer has commanded. Usually, you should also notice a rough-running condition, poor fuel economy, emissions problems, hard starting and hesitation along with this problem.
Error code P0340 indicates a malfunction with the camshaft position sensor A circuit. This type of malfunction can cause serious issues that require immediate repair because the underlying cause of the code could damage your vehicle`s engine if you continue to drive it.

HVAC actuator problems
ANSWER : The actuators are geared to work back and forth. You may have positioned them in a way where they will not work properly. You should have moved the door until they matched the actuator and not the other way around. You may have to remove each actuator and try and reposition them in order for them to work. If you feel like you need help with having them replaced, reach out to a certified technician.

CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON
ANSWER : The on board diagnostic (OBD) sets a pending code each time the ECU detects a problem. It confirms the code if it sees the same problem twice. So you’re really only dealing with the two codes : P0016 and 17.These codes are telling you that the timing between the crankshaft and the camshaft are off on Bank 1 (the driver’s side) cylinder bank. This could be a sensor error, a problem in the reluctor ring on the harmonic balancer, or a timing chain problem. Without doing a thorough diagnosis, it’s impossible to say what parts specifically need to be replaced. If you contact Your Mechanic, they can send a technician to your home or office to investigate the codes on you Mercedes and then let you know what it will take to fix it.

I have a 2008 lincoln mkz. I ran the codes and am getting a o2 bank 4 sensor 4. I can’t even find anything online that says my car
ANSWER : Hi there. From what I am aware of, there isn’t a bank 4 sensor 4 on this vehicle or other Ford products. There are four total O2 sensors, (two upstream and two downstream), so the code you are getting might be related to one of the downstream sensors. If I were in your position, I would research the specific code you are getting (assuming it’s a Ford / Lincoln specific OBD code) or have a professional mobile mechanic complete a digital scan so they can download all stored error codes that should help you pinpoint the source of the issue you’re having.

How to set correct timing of cam gear to cam alignment.
ANSWER : Hi there. You will need to get a cam alignment gear or something that will hold the camshafts together. Then align up the camshafts to the correct alignment with both dots facing the two slots on the top of the engine. Then insert the timing camshaft lock tool to hold the camshaft from turning. Put on a new timing belt and adjust it tight. Then remove the camshaft timing lock tool. Rotate the engine 720 degrees and make sure that the dots realign up. If you need further assistance with timing your engine, then seek out a professional, such as one from Your Mechanic, to help you.

EGR code, Cylinder 4 misfire code 0304 detected.
ANSWER : Hi there. The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve may be not designed for the emissions requirements for U.S. standards. If the EGR is pulling from cylinder number 4 and after replacing the EGR and the computer detects a misfire, then the EGR is malfunctioning and not responding. When you close off the tube to the EGR and the EGR light comes on and the misfire light goes out, then the EGR is not responding to your emissions system. I recommend replacing the EGR with the OEM specified part for the engine and all of the issues should go away. If you need further assistance with your misfire and EGR, then seek out a professional, such as one from Your Mechanic, to help you.

How much cost could be to replace a timing cover gasket on 2011 hyundai sonata 4cly? And the working time expectation?
ANSWER : Hi there. If the gasket in between the timing cover and the engine is leaking, it is recommended to replace the timing cover and gasket at the same time. Check engine light is on, shows cam sensor that I already replaced two times. Still the same code for camshaft sensor. It starts if I unplug cam sensor
ANSWER : Hello there, thanks for writing in. I’d be happy to help.

If you replaced the sensor twice and the issue persists, then I would look at the connector and ECM as possible sources of the issue. I would carefully inspect the connector to the cam sensor for any signs of oil leakage, damage, or wear, both on the wires and on the metal contacts. If the wiring looks okay I would move on to testing the wiring to make sure that the correct signal is being generated, if it is not then it may be possible that there is an issue with the ECM or wiring. It may also be possible that the aftermarket sensors are the source of the issue, even if they are new. In many cases aftermarket components are not as high of quality as OEM components, and for that reason can cause issues.

If you would like help, consider having an expert automotive technician from YourMechanic come to your home or office to inspect and diagnose this issue for you, and make any repairs as needed.
