won’t turn over

my trooper wont turn over… I used a socket and breaker bar to turn the crankshaft pulley, it turns but only so far… what could be the issue?

My car has 155000 miles.
My car has an automatic transmission.

Experienced mechanics share their insights in answering this question :
Hi there. Manually turning over an engine while spark plugs are installed is very hard to turn over due to compression inside the motor. If your car won’t turn over when you turn the key, it’s likely caused by an ignition relay that is faulty, a damaged starter or the starter relay. It could also be the battery or battery cables that are worn out. If you haven’t had any oil indicator lights come on and are good on oil change intervals, it’s less than likely that the motor is seized. It would be a good idea for you to have a professional mobile mechanic complete a car is hard to start inspection.

How to Identify and Fix Common car Problems ?

The most common reasons an Isuzu Trooper won`t start are a dead battery, an alternator problem, or failed starter.
The most common reasons an Isuzu Rodeo won`t start are a dead battery, an alternator problem, or failed starter.
There`s either a 3.0-litre common-rail turbo-diesel or a 3.5 petrol V6. Both are strong. The petrol unit offers more speed on the road but the diesel will probably be the best choice with its low-down torque.
Insufficient Compression. In order to start running under its own power, an engine needs four essential things: air, fuel, compression and spark. An engine with low compression can be difficult or impossible to start, and it means seals and gaskets could be leaking in the engine.
If your vehicle won`t start, it`s usually caused by a dying or dead battery, loose or corroded connection cables, a bad alternator or an issue with the starter. It can be hard to determine if you`re dealing with a battery or an alternator problem.
If the car is turning over but not starting, there might be not spark inside the cylinder to ignite the fuel. To check for spark you`ll need to remove one of the spark plugs. Once out connect the spark plug into the lead socket and place the metal electrode end of the plug 2-4mm from a metal part of the engine.
With the standard five-speed manual, this propels the Isuzu from 0-60 mph in a zippy 8.9 seconds and offers a hefty (for this class) tow capacity of 4500 pounds.
Most reliable vehicle I have ever owned!

I have owned over 10 used cars over my lifetime and the Isuzu Trooper has outperformed all of them. Parts are easy to obtain and since they are no longer sold in the US since 2002 , the value of troopers increase as long as you maintain them.

One common culprit for this problem is the crankshaft position sensor, which measures the position and speed of the crankshaft. The computer uses the information from this sensor to know when to fire the spark plugs. If the sensor isn`t working, the spark plugs won`t fire, keeping the engine from starting.
Hard start symptoms and starter failure may NOT be caused by the starter, but could actually be caused by the crankshaft position sensor. If your vehicle is experiencing one or more of these symptoms, the crankshaft sensor may be at fault.
The battery can be fully charged but still not be able to start the vehicle if it is failing or has a dead cell. Other likely issues are the fuel pump, ignition switch, battery cables, starter, or a clogged fuel filter.
The crankshaft position sensor monitors the position and speed of the crankshaft and other parameters that play an important role when starting the engine. If the crankshaft position sensor is having a problem, the vehicle may have intermittent starting issues or not start at all.
Connected to the battery is the alternator, which works to generate power for your vehicle`s electrical components. When you have a brand-new battery but still can`t start the car, the alternator might be the issue. Cold and damp climates may increase wear on an alternator, causing it to fail.
Incorrect timing is the most overlooked and misdiagnosed cause of a no-start. Perhaps you automatically think of ignition timing as the position of the crankshaft when the No. 1 plug fires. While this is important, it isn`t the only timing condition that can influence a no-start.
The 1999 Trooper gets 15 MPG overall, with 13 MPG in the city and 18 MPG on the highway.
The number following the letter `B` indicates the percentage of an engine`s population that will require an overhaul before the indicated mileage. That means that 90 percent of Isuzu 4HK1-TC engines are expected to last 375,000 miles before they require a major repair or rebuild.
Isuzu is one of the top diesel engine builders in the world. While toyota doesnt have a significant record surpassing 25 years thoughness in diesel engines compared to Isuzu that have set a record of over 25years longevity in their diesel engines. You cant compare Isuzu to Toyota in therms of Diesel engines.
Isuzu Motors` history began in 1916, when Tokyo Ishikawajima Shipbuilding and Engineering Co., Ltd. planned a cooperation with the Tokyo Gas and Electric Industrial Company to build automobiles.
LML. The 6.6L RPO LML (VIN code “8”) is the 2011–2016 version of the Isuzu/GM Duramax V8 diesel engine. It is a further advanced version of the LMM engine with the majority of the changes addressing a required drastic reduction in engine emissions.
The O2 sensor will not cause the no start. The no start can be caused by the fuel pump or the ignition system. You should check the engine for spark and fuel pressure, when it is not turning on to help narrow the problem down. The ignition system may be the coil, module, or pick up in the distributor.
If the level gets low, it can prevent proper lubrication of critical components inside the engine and cause starting problems, engine failure, and damage to critical components.
A: Possible causes: a marginal battery, a poor connection in the starting circuit or starter, a charging-system problem, or the battery is being drained while the car`s parked. If this only happens first thing in the morning, a weak battery or a drain in the electrical system are likely causes.

Engine turned off but inside of car still on, now engine won’t turn back on.
ANSWER : Hi there. The symptoms you’re describing with your boyfriend’s 2002 Grand Cherokee appear to be related to a broken or worn out ignition switch or relay. The ignition switch on the inside of the steering column is attached to multiple electronic connections that send signals to a relay box; which in turn, sends the signal to the individual components. The issue could be related to the ignition switch, the relay, or any of the components in between. If you want to have the fault pinpointed in person, I would have this starting issue inspected by a trained professional to ensure that the correct repair is made.

car won’t start.
ANSWER : A possibility is a faulty ignition switch. If the switch opens after the car starts, the engine will shut off. But, that is just a possibility and a diagnostic would have to be performed to rule that in or out. Be sure you have a fully charged battery that passes a load test. Starters motors can display intermittent operation if they are faulty. With a fully charged battery, if the starter motor does not run that signifies an electrical problem in the starter circuit (includes the ignition switch) or a problem with the starter motor itself. If there is power to the starter motor and yet it doesn’t run, the starter is condemned and replaced. Alternatively, if there is no power to the starter, or there is a big voltage drop anywhere on the circuit to the starter, then the circuit has to be traced until the fault in the circuit is found. Notably, faults can include high resistances, due to corrosion, wire strand breaks, or loose terminals, which can only be diagnosed using a voltage drop test. Regardless of what the underlying cause of the no start condition is, if you desire that a certified mechanic resolve this promptly, please simply request a no start diagnostic and the responding mechanic will get it diagnosed and repaired for you. Please let us know if you have further concerns or questions as we are always here to help you.

steering wheel won’t unlock my key turns only to turn lights on but that’s it can’t unlock steering wheel to start the car what to
ANSWER : The steering lock may not be unlocking either due to a faulty ignition lock housing or more commonly as the cars age a faulty spring at the steering wheel on the under side of the column. If the ignition lock housing is the issue the housing can be replaced. It s a bit tricky as the mounting bolt has break off heads and generally need to be driven out with a punch. If the lock is not disengaging because of a faulty spring on the ignition lock many owners have had the spring removed by having it drilled out of the housing. However, removing the spring may permanently disable the steering lock. The last option would be to replace the steering column. You may want to enlist the help of a mechanic who can recommend the proper repair for your situation.

As I’m driving, all my lights inside/out of the car turn off and the car still stays on. But when I turn the car off it won’t turn over
ANSWER : Hello there. The charging system on the car may not be charging the battery as you drive and the systems that keep the engine running are priority so the engine will stay running until the voltage drops below about 9 volts but the lighting and some other accessories may cut off above this voltage first. You should have the charging system tested to see if the alternator needs to be replaced.

Headlights wouldn’t turn off / now they won’t turn on
ANSWER : The most likely components to cause this may be the headlight relay, headlight switch, or the ignition switch itself. The relay is an electro-mechanical switch. The headlight switch sends a power signal to it. It then switches on internally to send power to the headlights. If the relay is sticking either in the on or off position, this can cause the lights to stay on or not turn on. If the headlight switch has failed, it may not be signaling the relay properly. With the ignition switch, if the mechanical tumbler portion is worn, it may not be fully moving it’s internals to signal the electrical portion of the switch to turn the lights on or off. Or vice versa, the electrical portion of the switch may have shorted internally.

Since one or more components may be at fault, it may be best to have a certified technician properly diagnose why the headlights are not working to find the exact cause.
