Will my transmission swap work?

I have a 96 f250 with a 7.5 460 in it and the 5 speed manual transmission went out of it but I have a 88 f250 with the same engine and a 5 speed manual also. will the transmission out of the 88 fit the 96? Thanks
My car has a manual transmission.
Experienced mechanics share their insights in answering this question :
The 1988 F250 had a S5-42 manual transmission and the 1996 had a S5-47 transmission. The two transmissions are different models and may have different gearing inside. The difference may also be one that is from a 2-wheel drive, and another from a 4-wheel drive or a different tail shaft length. My best guess would be that any differences between the two transmissions will make it very difficult to make this transmission swap.

In theory: yes. A custom adapter plate can theoretically allow any engine to match up to another transmission. However if you mismatch the power ratings of the two (massive V8 to a manual transmission of a 90`s Civic) you`re likely to shred the transmission very quickly.
The 4R100 was introduced as the replacement for the E4OD and was internally stronger for use in the Powerstroke Diesel trucks. While almost identical on the exterior, not all parts are interchangeable between these two units, so care must be exercised to insure compatibility.
Ford debuted the E4OD transmission for use in F-series pickup trucks like the F-150, F-250 and F-350. They also got fitted into the Ford Bronco SUV and E-series cargo and passenger vans.
High Wheeler. Other transmissions that would bolt behind the 6.9 or 7.3 would be T19 and C6. They have to have the 6.9/7.3 pattern.
There is an alternative to the transmission overhaul. The other option is to replace your transmission with an entirely different one, one that has already been rebuilt or remanufactured. So, to answer the title question, yes, it is possible to replace an entire transmission. And people sometimes choose this option.
To make sure, look at the production sticker (usually in the driver door) for the transmission code, make sure it matches perfectly. MTX-75 is the code for the 5-speed manual, and you can find here which other vehicles had that exact transmission.
The Ford Expedition. The Ford Excursion. The Ford E-Series. The Ford F-250 Super Duty.
In practice, the characteristics of the engine dominate, and the characteristics of the transmission have to be “adapted” to match. The transmission mediates between the engine and the road surface; it adapts the traction available to the power required, ensuring the desired performance.

To determine what type of transmission system you have under the hood, write down the code that appears underneath or beside the “TR” symbol. Once you have this code handy, call your local Mister Transmission and our technicians will look up your system specifications.

The 7.3 Powerstroke is a two-valve behemoth which measures in at 444 cubic inches and has a maximum stock power rating of 275hp and 525lb. ft.
Ford Performance has since announced that the Ford Godzilla V8 will now be for sale off-the-shelf crate engine along with a 10R140 transmission.
Ford 10R80 – 10-speed, 800 Nm transmission used in F150s and similar vehicles. V8 versions of this transmission should bolt to the 7.3.
Of course, when the swapped engine is similar to the original engine, it is often compatible with the original transmission. A good example here is the swap of a Toyota 3RZ into an older 22RE equipped truck. Because the engines are so similar, the 22RE transmission will bolt straight up to the 3RZ.
If you want to buy a used transmission, then you can expect a similar benefit. Used transmissions naturally cost less than new ones, which is a major factor. In many cases, you can save hundreds of dollars. Many used transmissions are technically remanufactured, which means they come with new parts and updates.
1996-1998 will all interchange. 1999-up will not interchange with anything previous as the GenIII engines used a transmission with different length input shaft, among other things. Now, here`s where it gets fun.

No. Every engine and transmission have very specific bolt patterns, but most engines have a couple or a few transmissions that will bolt to them from the same manufacturer as the engine.
Without the damping springs, this triple-disc unit can support 1,000 hp. In addition to offering billet shaft upgrades, a Mag-Hytec high capacity transmission pan can also be included in a Legendary 4R100 build.
Problem #1 – The Torque Converter

The Ford 4R100 torque converters share common failure points. To begin, one popular failure point in these converters is the lockup clutches themselves. This is the clutch pack at the front of the converter that activates in upper gears to improve power and fuel economy.

The oaH of the 5R110W unit is approximately 7.035”, while the oaH of the 4R100 unit is approximately 6.955”. NOTe: The 4R100 converter has a relatively straight fin angle, while the last row of ribs on the 5R110W unit has a “low stall” fin angle.
Another factor that heavily impacts the cost of an engine swap is whether you need a new transmission. You generally won`t need to replace the transmission, even when your engine has been totaled. If your old transmission can be salvaged, you`ll save yourself a lot of money!
Well yes, but there`s a little more to it than that. First, check your owner`s manual for the exact specifications of your classic car`s transmission. The VIN plate on some classic cars may also give you the model of transmission installed in your classic car, or at the very least, the transaxle model.

Transmission quits working completely until I turn it off, then restart it, and then it works briefly, quits again.
ANSWER : if the engine speed is increasing and the vehicle does not move, the transmission is slipping. The first thing to do would be to let the engine idle and warm up to operating temperature and then check the transmission fluid level while the engine is running and the gear selector is in park. If the fluid is at the proper level and the transmission is malfunctioning there may be an internal failure. If the fluid level is too low from a leak, this may cause the transmission to slip as well. Consider hring an experienced technician like one from YourMechanic who can come out for a closer look and offer a more personal diagnosis of your transmission concerns.

Windshield wipers stopped working. They’ll suddenly stop working then suddenly start working again. Has been happening for a week.
ANSWER : The problem you are describing likely stems from an intermittent electrical fault in the wiper circuit. The windshield wiper system uses a small electric motor to move the wiper arms that you see on the windshield. That electric motor is controlled through a switch, relay, fuse, and wiring. One, or more, of those electrical components has failed although it is also possible that the mechanical arms are binding (seized, if the lubricant has dried out) thus causing the electric circuit to the motor to overload. Regardless of the underlying fault, if you request a non functioning wiper diagnostic/repair, the responding certified mechanic will get this taken care of for you. If you have further questions or concerns, do not hesitate to re-contact YourMechanic as we are always here to help you.

My dash board don’t work my front light work when I change my light into high beam and my back window won’t go down
ANSWER : As unfortunate as it is, your vehicle would be considered flood damaged. Diagnosing electrical problems in a flood damaged vehicle is nearly impossible. This would take many hours or even days to determine which wiring harnesses and circuits have been affected. Then nearly all of the wiring under the dash would likely require replacement as well as many sensors and switches. On a BMW vehicle, the amount of wires and switches are likely more than that of a lower end vehicle. Due to the inefficiency in cost, you would likely be able to purchase another BMW like yours for less than what it would cost to fix your car. Many insurance companies would consider this type of damage to total out the vehicle unfortuantely.

Transmission swapped and gears don’t work
ANSWER : The 4L60-E should be interchangeable from vehicle to vehicle so this is more likely an electrical issue. Fuses to the powertrain and transfer case shift module need to be checked and any faults should be read out. Also, inspect the wiring to ensure the wiring harnesses have not been pinched. You may want to enlist the help of a mechanic, such as one from YourMechanic, who can survey the faults to diagnose your gear shifting issue.

My AC does not always work. If I fiddle with the blower knob I can ususally get it to work on the lowest setting.
ANSWER : Hi There,
It sounds like you may have a faulty blower motor resistor. The highest speed setting may still work because in most cars in the highest fan speed settings the current bypasses the blower motor resistor. In some cars, if the resistor is failed, the fan may stop working completely. Another reason a blower motor resistor may fail is when the blower motor has a mechanical problem or when a foreign object jams the blower motor fan blade and prevents it from spinning freely. This leads to increased current through the resistor and causes it to overheat and fail. I would suggest having an expert from YourMechanic come to your location to diagnose your system to determine what may be causing the fan not to work properly.

All dashboard lights and tail lights do not work after driving through a lot of snow. Headlights work. And brake lights work.
ANSWER : Hello. We’ll be happy to help you. There are a few things that I recommend checking to discover why your lighting system is malfunctioning. The headlight dimmer switch should be checked. Along with the wiring harness above the right front tire behind the fender well cover. Also
the main fuse under the hood should be inspected because other people with your particular vehicle have had similar lighting issues if that fuse goes bad. It will be a great idea to check the rest of the fuses in that area too while checking the main fuse. Once the fuses are checked inside of the main fuse box then I would check the fuses inside of their interior fuse box. The interior fuse box should be located on the driver side of the dashboard near where your legs would be. Sometimes when I shift my car’s automatic transmission into Drive it stays in neutral. Reverse works and trans fluid is full.
ANSWER : It is very possible that you could have some internal transmission damage. I would recommend enlisting in the assistance of a qualified transmission professional to inspect your transmission for internal faults. I must warn that this could be a pricy inspection as it may involve the removal and disassembly of the transmission. However, this is a sure fire way to determine if any internal damage has occured. The good news is that if any damage has occured, it can easily be resolved at that time since the transmissoin has already been disassembled.

Honda Civic 2008. AC stopped working suddenly and engine check light came ON for a day.Next day AC worked and no engine light.
ANSWER : Hi there. In both cases, when an AC system is not working and a warning light is coming on the dashboard, typically a professional mechanic will complete the same initial inspection, which is to download the stored error codes that triggered the warning light initially. This tends to give them an idea as to what is causing the problems. This could be something as simple as an electrical relay that is faulty or loose or an indication of a computer related "glitch". Either way, the best way to move forward is to have a professional mobile mechanic complete a check engine light inspection.
