While driving at low speed trunk shifts into neutral?

Could this be a differential problem ? I've had the truck at the transmission Shop and they say there is absolutely nothing wrong with the transmission or transfer case. It feels like the truck has been put into neutral. You can put the truck into neutral and let it coast for a few seconds . You then put it back into drive and everything is fine.

My car has 127000 miles.
My car has an automatic transmission.

Experienced mechanics share their insights in answering this question :
Hello and thank you for your question. If your 2005 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is shifting the transmission or transfer case into neutral, then there may be a problem with the shifter on the column or floor if you have a ratcheting type and a problem with the transfer case shifter on the floor.

Check to make sure that there is nothing pulling on the shifter that could accidentally put the transmission or transfer case into neutral while driving (if you have a manual shifter). If you have a shift button, then check the control module to the transfer case. This is located up under the dashboard on the driver side. If the control module is failing, it looses connection to the transfer case shifter that control what gear to put it in. Check the wires to the control module for any burns or corrosion. I recommend replacing the control module to the transfer case.

If you need assistance replacing the control module and checking your transfer case, then I would recommend having another expert inspect the transmission system to diagnose the intermittent shifting problem that you are experiencing.

How to Identify and Fix Common car Problems ?

A low transmission fluid level could cause the symptom of feeling like the transmission slips into neutral. The low transmission fluid level would allow the vehicle to move a short distance, until the filter could no longer pick up fluid.
Though it will not harm your transmission to shift into Neutral while your vehicle is in motion, the additional wear on your brakes by leaving the transmission in Drive will be negligible over the life of the brake pads. It is that minor. WRT “reverse”, this isn`t true on modern cars.
Coasting down a hill in neutral –

So all in all, coasting – downhill or in any other circumstances – can be potentially dangerous and doesn`t save you any fuel along the way.

Avoid changing gears while the car is moving

The car will actually stop but you will end up wearing out your automatic transmission band. The transmission band is hard to access making its repair and replacement expensive and time-consuming.

Inside an automatic transmission are clutch packs and clutch bands that use friction to move certain parts when shifting. Revving the engine and then immediately putting the transmission into drive causes those clutch packs and clutch bands to prematurely wear out.
In neutral, the torque converter actually has the same function as the clutch in vehicles with manual transmission. This means it separates the power connection between the engine and the transmission.
In Park and Neutral, the transmission side of the torque converter is permitted to spin at engine speed without sending energy to the wheels.
Secondly, we want to debunk the myth that putting your car in Neutral saves gas. We here at PumpTalk are always looking for ways to save on fuel, but coasting in Neutral is not one of them. It`s true that when you place your car in Neutral, the engine is idling and consuming a minimal amount of fuel.
If the speed timing sensor is failing or sending inaccurate data, the engine will rev higher before the transmission shifts into a higher gear. You`ll notice this issue if you`re accelerating to highway speed and the transmission seems to take a long time to shift into the higher gear.
The defect is caused by mistakes in the setup of insulation material for the harness, routing, and some of the fastening points of the harness to the transmission housing. A short circuit could cause the vehicle to unexpectedly shift into neutral while driving.
You might also hear what sounds like revving when your vehicle is in neutral. A sign that your clutch`s input shaft bearing has worn out is a noisy engine before you put your automobile into gear and then a normal-sounding engine once it is in gear.
Among the potential underlying causes are vacuum leaks, EGR system malfunctions, malfunctioning oxygen sensors, dirty fuel injectors, fuel pump malfunction, faulty spark plugs, a faulty mass airflow sensor, or a faulty throttle position sensor.
Low fluid levels

This is usually the main reason why gears start to slip. It is important to check fluid levels regularly and ensure they do not fall below the minimum. If the levels are low, there is usually not enough hydraulic pressure to engage the gears.

My car will not shift out of drive and into park – 1999 Hyundai Sonata
ANSWER : Hi. This sounds like the ignition switch has a problem and is not allowing the car to go into park. If the ignition switch is not sending the signal to the neutral safety switch that the key is in the run position, it will not allow the shifter to move. It is also possible that the shift linkage is damaged and is causing the problem you have as well.

I suggest you have a certified technician, such as one from YourMechanic, come to your location to determine why the car is not shifting properly and suggest the necessary repairs

Transmission was low. Put 4 quarts in it and everything was fine until next morning shifting to drive and felt like neutral
ANSWER : If the fluid was 4-5 quarts low, that’s a third of the total transmission fluid capacity. The transmission has probably been running very hot because of that, causing accelerated wear to the internals (clutches, etc). Check the dipstick for the correct fluid type to use. Ford transmissions are very fussy about using the correct fluid type. You can try a full transmission fluid service by replacing the fluid and filter, not a "trans flush". You might get lucky and have that solve your problem, but odds are with being driven with the fluid that low, a transmission rebuild may be the only solution.

Truck stalls when shifting into drive from park or reverse
ANSWER : Hi there. The vehicle running great, once past the initial stall, leads me away from a fuel delivery concern. The stalling issue may be, the minimum airflow rate is not properly set. This could be the result of a dirty or worn throttle body. Cleaning and/or making an adjustment to the throttle body may correct the problem. Engine running at idle, plug the IAC passage, and the RPM (revolutions per minute) should be at or near 400 rpm. A vacuum leak present could also cause the engine idle to be improperly controlled and needs to be identified before any adjustments are made. I recommend having your vehicle’s stalling issue be diagnosed and repaired by a certified technician, such as one from YourMechanic.

My pacifica runs and drives only reverse when i shift it to drive dies quickly . But you can shift it to reverse and neutral
ANSWER : This is an internal problem with the transmission and may be a valve body or leaking internal seal. The problem is the transmission leaking pressure internally, and when you put it in drive, the transmission is trying to go into reverse and drive at the same time causing the transmission to stall the engine. Have a mechanic, such as one from YourMechanic, scan the computer to see if a code is received that will help detect the cause. They will be able to diagnose your stalling issue, and any other problem you are having, so that a proper repair can be made.

Won’t shift past 2nd gear . It drives normal to 2nd gear but wont shift into 3r – 2000 Ford F150 4×4
ANSWER : Hello – I don’t think this is related to switching back to 2WD per se. There is a shift position sensor on the side of the transmission, and it’s possible that the snow activity caused moisture and/or dirt to get into the sensor. I would recommend a transmission inspection by a mobile, professional mechanic, such as one from YourMechanic, who will come to your location, diagnose this problem, give you an accurate assessment of damage and cost estimate for repairs.

when driving speed slow down and resume to speed it begins to jerk i have to put in over drive to resume speed especially on hiway
ANSWER : You should have the vehicle scanned. The data from the speed sensor needs to be checked to see if the transmission or engine is the cause of the jerking. You may have a transmission solenoid that’s not shifting correctly, an engine misfire, or a sensor malfunction. Have a certified mechanic, like one from YourMechanic, scan and test your vehicle for you to properly diagnose the car’s jerking symptom.

Transmission shift hard after high speed driving but shifts normal after engine is off for a while.
ANSWER : Hi there. Transmission fluid should be flushed every 50,000 miles to help avoid issues like you are experiencing. So, it’s probably a good idea to have your transmission fluid flushed and filter replaced, as the obstruction of debris or worn out fluid can cause the hard to shift issue you’re experiencing.
