When I open my doors the interior lights don’t come on.

When i open my doors the lights do not come on, but do come on when i manually turn my dimmer switch and press the map lights. I have checked fuses and no luck, I have read about a CTM could that be my issue or could it be that the switches in the door frames are bad

Hello. Without knowing the make and model of your vehicle, it hard to definitively give insight on the exact component that has failed.

In general, when the door is opened, the switch turns on the interior lights. If the lights are not coming on, then its possible the switch has failed. It also possible there is a short between the fuse and the door switch.

Does your vehicle have a door ajar warning light, and if so does it turn on when you open the door? The door switch in question would be responsible for this warning as well, and if its not working this would indicate that the switch has gone bad or is not receiving power. The switch is used and impacted often enough that it is more likely to fail than any other component in the circuit.

You will need to test the available voltage at the door switch, and what the voltage is after the door switch is supposed to turn on. If there is available voltage before the switch, and no voltage after, you will need to replace the door switch as necessary.

If you’re unable to fix the issue, have a certified technician, like one from YourMechanic, come to your location and diagnose the electrical issue and firsthand.

Circuit Overload

Check you don`t have too many appliances plugged into one power point. One of the common causes of lights not working is an overload of circuits. This happens when too many appliances are connected to one circuit, which means not enough current is available for each appliance or light fixture.

The IOD fuse is a 20 amp fuse located in cavity #51 of the integrated power module (IPM). This fuse provides power to the instrument cluster, diagnostic connector, map lamps, glove box, courtesy lamps, radio and underhood light.

Check the light bulb first to see if it has burned out. If so, replace the bulb. Check to see if the bulb is tight in the socket. The constant on-off flow of electricity can sometimes loosen a light bulb in the socket.
Components. A complete sensor consists of a motion detector, an electronic control unit, and a controllable switch/relay. The detector senses motion and determines whether there are occupants in the space. It also has a timer that signals the electronic control unit after a set period of inactivity.
When one light does not work and the others do then a blown fuse may have occurred which needs replacing. If a short circuit has occurred then replacing the fuse and repairing the wiring may be needed. If the car door lights do not work then the door jamb switch often needs replacing.
You may simply have a faulty door switch that is turning on and off when it shouldn`t. Check that all the doors make the interior lights come on and go off when you open and close the doors. You may also what to check the tailgate/trunk. If one of them is not operating correctly then it`s switch may need replacing.
If one or more lights in your home have gone out and your circuit breaker isn`t tripped, what could the issue be? One culprit could be a GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) outlet that has tripped. When experiencing electrical imbalances, GFCI outlets trip much quicker to protect people from electrocution.
The connections are loose

A loose wire, circuit breaker connection, or terminal can lead to problems like flickering lights. Loose connections create resistance, which causes arcing, which can lead to overheating or even electrical fires.

A fuse isn`t required for the lights to work. You can still hook them up directly to the battery. But most people still want to use a fuse to protect the circuit and wiring in case of a short.
The electric wiring for light and fan circuit uses a thin fuse of low current rating(= 5A) because the line wire has a current carrying capacity f 5A.
Door Jamb Switch Kit mounts in a door jamb to activate lights or other electrical items when the door is open. All purpose switch for indoor use on sliding or hinged doors in locations like closets, darkrooms, and walk-in refrigerators.
Puddle lights are the car lamps placed just below the mirror. These illuminate the ground near the car door. Puddle lights prevent you from stepping into a, well, puddle or anything murky when getting into your car. Puddle lights have been around for over a decade now.

Most modern cars have a computer called the BCM or Body Control Module. Depending on the settings, it either has a time delay, or instant turn off that occurs when you lock the car doors. The door lock signal comes in from your remote, the BCM locks the doors, and turns off the interior lights.
If you find that your light switch toggle starts behaving differently than usual (i.e. becoming stiffer than usual or losing its “snap”) it`s a good sign that the switch mechanism is worn and should be replaced immediately by a qualified electrician.
A modern stage lighting system consists of a few main parts- consoles, fixtures, distribution/dimming, and cabling. Whether a small or large system, these basic pieces make every lighting rig function.

How do I override the interior light delay module so when I shut the door the lights will turn off?
ANSWER : Hi there. The interior lamp control module is located under the center of the instrument panel on the dash of your vehicle. Look for any ground wires to the interior light circuits to see if they are loose. If all the wiring looks in good condition, I recommend replacing the interior lamp control module. The module is tied into the interior lighting, the door switches, and the ignition switch. You car hard wire the dome light to the fuse box with a key on only slot to bypass the module if you insist on not replacing the module. If you need further assistance with the dome light staying on after locking the doors, then seek out a professional, such as one from Your Mechanic, to help you.

Door unlocked alarm, no power window or door lock on driver door only, interior light comes on with L turn signa
ANSWER : Hi there. In general, wiring harnesses are sold by the manufacturer as a whole harness; not individual wires. It is much easier, cost-efficient and safer to replace the entire harness if it’s determined that it is faulty and the source of your alarm / door issue. It would be best to have one of our mobile mechanics come to your location and complete an electrical problems inspection though, as it’s possible that this issue is related to an error code trapped in the ECU. If this is the case, simply clearing the code will resolve the problem. If the issue is determined to be the wiring harness or an exposed wire, they can recommend and most likely complete the repairs as well.

Dome lights will not turn on when door opened, radio will not turn off when car is off and door is opened.
ANSWER : Hello, thank you for writing in. The vehicle is likely having issues with the door switch which activates/shuts down both circuits. This is going to look like a peg in the door frame next to the hinge. The peg that is designed to make contact with the switch behind it may be at fault, or the switch itself may be faulty. It is best considering the circumstances that you replace the entire unit, as they are typically sold as an assembly. It is a rather straight forward repair if you are looking to do it yourself. Simply remove the old switch and reconnect it to the new one. Make sure to unplug the battery before hand. With that said, you can also contact our service department to schedule an appointment, and we can resolve the issue for you.

on a 1970 Lincoln mark iii Interior lights wont turn on and warning lights are very dim and doorlock button makes buzzer go on
ANSWER : Hi there. Although the electrical systems on older vehicles tend to be much simpler in design, in many cases, issues like you’ve described can be very tricky to trace. It could possibly be something as simple as an expose wire creating an electrical short or a faulty relay that is not completing an electrical circuit. I wish we can help you further, but the best advice I can offer is to have one of our mobile mechanics come to your location and complete an electrical problems inspection.

Interior lights stay on, open door light comes and goes
ANSWER : Hello. For your 2000 Plymouth Grand Voyager, it sounds like there may be a short or short to ground in the wiring harness. I recommend having a certified technician, like one from YourMechanic, come and diagnose your electrical problem and assist with the appropriate repairs.

Intermittently, dashboard and interior lights do not work
ANSWER : Hello there, thank you for asking about your 1988 Oldsmobile Toronado. This is something that would require first hand inspection for complete diagnosis. However, there is a technical service bulletin (TSB) that may pertain to your issue. The TSB is number 89-T-129 and it deals with an "Electrical Problem" message on the message display and erratic air conditioning operation. The solution is to replace the HVAC control module with an upgraded one. There is also another TSB 89-T-140 which deals with intermittent climate control and instrument cluster operation due to a faulty solder joint in central power supply. The fix is to replace the unit with an upgraded model. I recommend having the pros at YourMechanic diagnose the electrical issues and repair this problem for you.

Rear brake light, and some interior lights don’t come on unless I’m braking
ANSWER : Hello. Replacing the stop light socket with a new one should have solved the intermittent problem of the stop light not working all of the time. It is possible that when you tweaked the socket, it caused a short to ground. This could explain why the dash lights only come on when you press the brakes.

The first thing that I would suggest is that the stop light socket be replaced. After replacing the stop light socket, if the dash lights still only come on when you press the brake pedal, the wiring for the dashboard will need to be inspected for any shorts to ground or bare wires touching metal that it shouldn’t touch. Since this issue started as a rear light problem, I would start with having your rear lights inspected by a certified technician, such as one from YourMechanic.

Interior lights don’t come on when opening door
ANSWER : Hello. There should be a switch located on the interior light of your car that has a switch to operate the lights when the door is opened or closed. The symbol that is most commonly used to indicate the location of this switch is one that looks like a door. It is also possible that your dimmer switch is in the off position or on a very low dim setting preventing the interior lights from coming on. If you require assistance with this problem, a certified technician, such as one from YourMechanic, can come inspect the interior lights on your car and assist with a repair.
