Starting problems

My truck recently started taking several attempts to start. I changed my fuel pump because I was only hearing it partial turn on. After installing it , it did not change anything I then changed my gas cap, fuel tank pressure sensor, filter, and cam shaft position sensor. It still is not starting . It sometimes will turn over but after several attempts. What else could it be?

My car has 230000 miles.
My car has an automatic transmission.

Experienced mechanics share their insights in answering this question :
Hey there. You should have the fuel pressure checked to see if the pressure does not drop after you turn off the vehicle. If it does, then have the pressure regulator replaced for not holding pressure. If the pressure holds but the pump intermittently does not come on, then try replacing the fuel pump relay in the fuse relay box in the engine compartment. You might also want to verify and check all fuses and fuse holders for evidence that it overheated and is losing connection. You may need to put in a fuse bypass if one is burnt. If you would like to have all of this checked for you before making repairs, a qualified professional from YourMechanic can diagnose the starting problem and perform any repairs required.

How to Identify and Fix Common car Problems ?

The most common reasons a Ford Expedition won`t start are a dead battery, an alternator problem, or failed starter.
Your F150 does indeed have a fuel pump driver module located above and just ahead of the spare tire. It is attached to a steel cross member with two fasteners. The aluminum base is very susceptible to corrosion being mounted against steel. It is a good idea to check /test this part when having fuel delivery problems.
The 2001 Ford Explorer`s fuel pump relay is located on the fuse panel in the passenger compartment under the dash on the driver`s side.
This usually means the battery is bad and incapable of handling a huge request for power to crank the engine over. Headlights begin white and bright, when you try to start the engine, they dim to nothing or almost nothing then as soon as you let go of the key, the headlights QUICKLY bounce back to white and bright.
The fuel pump shut-off switch has a red reset button on top of it.
If the fuel pump relay fails the fuel pump will be left without power. The engine may still crank when the key is turned, however it will not be able to start due to lack of fuel. This symptom can also be caused by a wide variety of other issues, so having the vehicle properly diagnosed is highly recommended.
The Fuel Pump Driver Module controls the voltage delivered to a vehicle`s fuel pump. By controlling the voltage, the module maintains optimal fuel pressure and fuel delivery to the engine throughout its full operating range.
This part is mounted on top of the Electric Fuel Pump in the back of the vehicle.
The electric fuel pump on a vehicle with a spark ignition engine is controlled by a fuel pump relay. The engine control module (ECM) activates the relay when operating conditions are correct. For safety purposes, the fuel pump relay is only activated when an engine speed signal is received by the ECM.
Your engine won`t start. While the cause could be a range of issues related to fuel, compression, or spark, the fuel pump is often a likely culprit.
Finally, your vehicle might not start because of the battery, alternator, starter, fuel filter, or the fuel pump. All of these things play a role in getting your vehicle started. If the pump is dead, you won`t be able to get gas into the combustion chamber to start the car.
The engine does not start

An engine that refuses to start can be another sign of a bad ignition switch. The ignition switch sends power to the the starter motor, engine controls, and ignition controls. These systems may not receive the power they need to start up if the ignition switch isn`t working properly.

If your vehicle won`t start, it`s usually caused by a dying or dead battery, loose or corroded connection cables, a bad alternator or an issue with the starter. It can be hard to determine if you`re dealing with a battery or an alternator problem.
A dead battery or a failed starter motor will not allow the engine to crank at all. But these components don`t always fail suddenly one day. If a battery is low on energy, or if the connections are loose, your engine may be able to crank, but it may not start–or it may take several tries.
The battery can be fully charged but still not be able to start the vehicle if it is failing or has a dead cell. Other likely issues are the fuel pump, ignition switch, battery cables, starter, or a clogged fuel filter.

Fuel pump engages. Batery good, alternator good volts, jump start helps when wont start. Temp does not matter. Intermittent?
ANSWER : Hello. Thank you for writing in. There are several reasons your vehicle may only start when jump starting. The first and most common is a build up of resistance that is causing you to need a boost of voltage to get the engine started. This may be due to poor battery cables, a bad ground connection, a poor starter solenoid, and a couple of other issues. The first thing you want to do is perform a visual inspection of the starting system. Make sure there is no corrosion build up in the battery cables. You can also check the resistance across these wires and make sure you have a solid connection between components. You then want to make sure the starter solenoid is doing its job. It is responsible for taking the small amount of electricity sent by the ignition and turning it into a huge electrical charge that is strong enough to push over the engine with the help of some gear ratios in its favor. Do some more testing, and stick to the basics before assuming its something seriously complicated.

My 2001 c320 has an intermittent starting problem. I turn the key to start the car and nothing. There is no engine turn over. All
ANSWER : A YourMechanic no start diagnostic on the problem you have written in about involves first determining whether or not full battery voltage is reaching the starter motor itself. If not, then the circuit has to be traced from the battery onward, through the wiring, fuses, relay, ignition switch and so forth until the break in the circuit is found. On the other hand, if it is determined that full battery voltage (i.e., no voltage drop due to high resistance in circuit) is reaching the starter motor, that means you need a new starter. In the latter case, by the way, sometimes starter motors develop a "bad spot" on the armature and thus if you use a rubber mallet and strike the motor (the motor, not the solenoid housing), you can sometimes get the starter to work as the armature "jumps" past the bad spot. If the rubber mallet trick does work, of course, that is a further indication that the "intermittent" fault is within the starter itself. Do not use metal tools around the starter, by the way, as you can cause a short circuit to ground if you touch the exposed hot terminals causing damage and personal injury. If you would like a certified mobile mechanic to professionally diagnose and repair your no start problem, by all means please follow up with YourMechanic.

Vehicle won’t start, once it’s jump started it only stays running until you turn it off, then it work start again without jumping.
ANSWER : Hi there. There could be two problems here. It is possible that your battery is bad and will not take a charge from your alternator while driving. In that case every time you shut your car off you will not have enough juice to start it again. Inspect your battery – it should have at least 12.5 to 13 volts to start your car, if it doesn’t you will need to replace the battery. The second problem could be that your alternator is bad and not charging your battery, in this case you will need to replace your alternator. Both the battery and the alternator can be tested in your car. If you would like to have the car checked for you, a certified professional from YourMechanic can come to your car’s location to diagnose the starting problem and proceed with repairs.

I have a 2001 Jetta Volkswagen and I want to start it one day the car will turn on but won’t start what could the problem be ?
ANSWER : Hello. Does the engine attempt to fire up and start at all? If not the starter is not working, or is not receiving enough power. The starter can be removed and bench tested, however these tests can be false. They do not load test the starter. The battery may also be strong enough to power lights and electronics, but not be powerful enough to turn over the starter and engine. You can test this by jump starting the vehicle. If the jump start works, the battery was either drained, is failing, or the alternator is failing to charge the battery. Both of the battery and the alternator can be removed from the vehicle and tested. You can usually have this done at your local auto parts stores. If the starter is turning over the engine, then you have a fuel, spark, or sensor issue. Either way, further testing must be done to find what is keeping the vehicle from starting.

Hi I have an 2001 Infiniti i30 and when I put it in drive it starts to shake and when I start driving it starts shaking and rumbl
ANSWER : Hi there. There are many sources that cause vibration, and if a single component designed to dampen that fails, you’ll feel it. Motor mounts, transmission mounts, suspension bushings are just a few of the things that are designed to minimize vibration. However, damage to fuel system components like a mass air flow sensor can also cause this type of problem. The best way to narrow the causes down is to have a professional mobile mechanic come to your location and complete a car shakes and vibrates inspection.

Hello my Ford Expedition eddie bauer clicks over but does not start.
ANSWER : Hi there. Check the battery and see if it has a full charge. Also, check the battery for a load test and see if it holds a load for 30 seconds without dropping below 11.5 volts. If the battery is good, then check the starter to see if the cables are tight and clean. Try tapping on the starter solenoid and see if the engine starts up. If the engine starts up after tapping on the solenoid, then the starter needs replaced. If there is no effect, then the starter relay is getting too hot and needs replaced. If you need further assistance with the starter not engaging for four minutes, then seek out a professional, such as one from Your Mechanic, to help you.

Cranks over start than dies
ANSWER : Hi There,
The idle air control valve is a small valve on the engine’s intake system that reads the air intake as it comes into the motor. This is controlled by the car’s ECM which uses this information to make adjustments to the air/fuel ratio depending on various inputs such as outside air temperature, intake air temperature, load and various other things. As you accelerate, your car’s engine is receiving a much higher dose of fuel than when at idle and conversely, when you let off the gas pedal, there is a sudden change in this fuel supply as a result of your foot letting off the pedal. When this happens, the job of the idle air control valve is to bring this deceleration down to a slow and smooth idle rather than suddenly cutting off the fuel supply causing the motor to die. When the idle air control valve is not working properly, this cause a disruption in this process resulting in the engine not being able to idle properly. I would recommend having a professional come to your location to diagnose and inspect your vehicle.

Car won’t start – 2004 Ford Focus
ANSWER : Hi and thanks for contacting YourMechanic. Check the battery cables for more corrosion and clean them up again. You may need to put backing soda and water mixture on the terminals to clean the corrosion completely off. Make sure that the cables are tight and also tight on the starter solenoid. By rocking the vehicle back and forth and using the clutch to start the vehicle, this is an indication that the cable on the starter is either corroded or loose. If you need further assistance troubleshooting your starting system, then seek out a technician, such as one from YourMechanic, to diagnose and resolve the issue.
