Shift linkage

I replaced the motor in my car and put a new clutch in in the process but now I can't get it into 1st, 3rd, or 5th I'm guessing something with the linkage

My car has 202000 miles.
My car has a manual transmission.

Experienced mechanics share their insights in answering this question :
This may suggest the transmission synchros may be wearing out. Your transmission has small gear synchronizer rings that help to move the transmission in and out of the various gears. When these begin to wear out, you may notice it hard to shift in and out of gears as you describe. You may also occasionally hear a bit of a grinding sound when trying to shift from gear to gear. I would recommend having an expert from YourMechanic come to your location to diagnose and inspect your transmission.

Shift Linkage refers to the car cables that connect the gearshift or gear selector to the transmission. Gear shift linkage, shifting linkage and transmission shift linkage (transmission linkage) are related terms.
The national average cost for a transmission shift cable replacement in 2023 is $455.
Technically speaking, yes you can drive a car with a broken shifter cable but it is not recommended. Driving with a broken or failing shifter cable is dangerous, hazardous, and unpredictable at best.
A powertrain control module also controls engine and transmission functions. It is responsible for timing shifts, shift feel, and engaging the clutch.
When a shifter bushing is worn, the shifter feels loose. It`s because the worn bushing left a gap between the handle and the shift rail. Shift rails have detent notches machined into their sides. A spring-loaded ball fits into the detent notch to keep the transmission in gear.
If the shift cable breaks, your shifter handle won`t return to its neutral position on its own. If the horizontal cable breaks, you won`t be able to shift. If the vertical cable breaks, you will only be able to shift to third or fourth gear.
The most skillful drivers can shift non-synchronous transmissions without using the clutch by bringing the engine to exactly the right RPM in neutral before attempting to complete a shift. If done improperly, it can damage or destroy a transmission. Some truck drivers use this technique with the higher gears.
Before we start, in short, yes, it is perfectly fine to skip gears in manual transmission but there are a few points that you should take care of. For starters, skipping gears while upshifting is a rather simple process, but it is downshifting that is complex and requires some significant skills.
When you shift your automatic transmission into P, an important piece is engaged called a parking pawl. The pawl is what locks the transmission and keeps it from transferring mechanical power to the wheels of your vehicle. Shifting gears while still in motion can damage this locking mechanism.
A damaged shifter cable will not start your vehicle from a neutral or drive position. The car can start at any gear. That is risky and if the cable breaks while driving, stop the vehicle and tow it to a mechanic. As a driver, it is important to be aware of the gear position at all times.
If the cable or housing has become kinked, worn, frayed or corroded, you may experience slow shifting, inconsistent shifting, hard shifting or no shifting at all. Replacing your cables and/or housing can improve shifting performance. When replacing shift cables, it can a good idea to also replace the housing.
When a MAF sensor malfunctions, it can do so in a very subtle way. It can create an erratic or incorrect signal on initial take-off, which can cause an elongated shift. It can deliver an incorrect signal at higher engine speed, which can create shudder that could be mistaken for torque-converter-clutch (TCC) problems.
Because the TP sensor is an input to the control module for various automatic transmission functions (e.g., shift points and torque converter clutch operation), a problem with the sensor can cause transmission performance issues. For example, you might experience harsh or delayed shifting.
Most of the time this car shaking is caused by the transmission, though it can sometimes be caused by a bent exhaust or one that`s different to the original. Vibrating, shaking and grinding can indicate serious problems with your transmission so it`s important to get your vehicle checked sooner rather than later.
When a shifter becomes hard to move, it is usually the interlock cable. AKA, shift cable. This cable slides in a housing and connects directly to the transmission. When this cables becomes worn, it gets hard to move inside the housing.
The gearbox linkage transfers movement of the gear stick to the gearbox, allowing gear engagement. We stock high-quality gearboxes and linkages for all cars. In a sense, the gearbox is the intermediary between engine and wheels. Its job is to optimise the engine`s rotational speed to achieve the desired road speed.
Gear linkage or cables transfer the movement of the gearstick into corresponding action of the gearbox selectors in order to change gear.
An automatic transmission shifter assembly comprises a shift lever support configured for attachment to a vehicle, a shift lever mounted to the shift lever support to shift between transmission gear settings; a brake transmission system interlock (BTSI) comprising a shift lever control member controllable by actuation …
For manual transmission equipped cars, it is a component that replaces the stock gear selector (shifter). A shift kit usually shortens the throws of selecting a gear (also known as a short throw shift or short shifter), therefore allowing a driver to reduce the shift time and change gears more efficiently.
With that being said, your shift selector cable doesn`t have a specified lifespan. It lasts as long as it lasts. In most cases, you should get at least five to eight years out of it, but premature failure isn`t uncommon.
Shifter (derailleur) cables come in two standards, main difference being the end barrel, though cable thickness also tends to differ: Campagnolo standard – 1.1 to 1.2 mm cable diameter, with a bit smaller diameter barrel at the end.
Grease, dirt and moisture can collect in or on the interlock and brakelight switches as well as on the shift cable and related parts, hampering their operation and making it hard to shift into gear.
Shifting delays are often caused by many things but most commonly due to poor maintenance or high mileage. Transmission fluid, in addition to acting as a coolant, keeps internal seals lubricated to help prevent hardening or wearing out.
If the linkage is not correctly aligned, it will cause various problems, including an inability to engage drive or to start the engine. Keep in mind that the exact adjustment method depends on the transmission type and the design of the linkage.

Won’t shift out of first unless you let go of gas but it will shift back down and never grab second
ANSWER : If you have all the drive shafts in the front and rear, then you will damage the transfer case or one of the axles if you drive the vehicle and engage the front end. The two different gear ratios will do this. As far as the transmission goes, you have a problem with the governor inside the transmission and may have bad second gear parts. Have a mechanic pressure test the transmission and diagnose the shifting issue for you.

Truck will shift sometimes then it doesn’t shift. If you wait a while it will shift again. We are trying to figure out what’s going on
ANSWER : Hi, thanks for writing in. The first thing I recommend is to make sure the ATF (automatic transmission fluid) is full.

Does the transmission shift up a gear or two and stay in that gear, or does it drive fine for a bit, then stop shifting until you turn the car off or sit still with the motor running? Or, do you continue to drive and eventually it begins shifting again. Are there any codes?

What I would do if I were diagnosing your truck would be to connect a scanner and study the data while driving to know what is going on. Without said data and not quite being clear about what is happening, it comes down to solenoids or sensors that the TCM (transmission control module) uses to calculated shift points based on load values determined by the PCM (powertrain control module).

I’m afraid all I can offer you at this point is suggesting you make sure the fluid is full and clean. If it isn’t clean, begin by replacing the filter in the pan and do a transmission fluid exchange, not just pan drop with a drain and fill. This doesn’t get all the ATF out of the transmission, and when there are problems, it pays to be as thorough as possible.

I recommend the following inspection if you should need further assistance: Car hard to shift

Hope this helps and best of luck!

recently my Safari started "hesitating" or " shifting" roughly when shifting at low speeds. doesn’t do it all the time
ANSWER : Hi there. Many electronically controlled transmissions are computer controlled. With that said, the input signals for the engine can have a direct affect on the transmission behavior. Do no rely on scan tool recommendations because it is just that, a recommendation and not a diagnosis. Think of the scan tool you witnessed as a tool to sell parts, nothing more. A capable scan tool provides more than codes; it provides live data to the technician to aid in the diagnosis. When the computer sees an operating condition that is out of specification it sets a code; it does not know what or why, but only that it is out of spec. The code leads the technician to the system that has the fault; it does not diagnose it. Before you do anything, have the battery tested. A bad cell or low state of health can wreak havoc on an electrical system. I suggest having a qualified technician perform an inspection to avoid replacing unnecessary parts. Your Mechanic has several technicians available that can assist you with a check engine light inspection and a car is shifting hard inspection.

Won’t shift past 2nd gear . It drives normal to 2nd gear but wont shift into 3r – 2000 Ford F150 4×4
ANSWER : Hello – I don’t think this is related to switching back to 2WD per se. There is a shift position sensor on the side of the transmission, and it’s possible that the snow activity caused moisture and/or dirt to get into the sensor. I would recommend a transmission inspection by a mobile, professional mechanic, such as one from YourMechanic, who will come to your location, diagnose this problem, give you an accurate assessment of damage and cost estimate for repairs.

Transmission linkage not moving
ANSWER : There is a cable that connects the actual linkage on the transmission to the shifter in the car. If the cable somehow breaks or becomes dislodged it will feel similar to what you are describing. This is a common issues with some vehicles. If this happens the cable itself will need to be replaced. I suggest asking a mechanic to help, such as one from YourMechanic. Shift selector cable replacement often requires disassembly of shifter and console assemblies. Some of the clips may require special tools to remove them without breaking. A mechanic should be able to do this without damaging them, install the cable and get you back on the road!

Car begins to roll when the shift lever is in park had only starts in the neutral position, just rebuilt the transmission
ANSWER : The neutral start safety switch could be misaligned or a fault in the linkage and./or cable could be contributing to the problem because "Park" is not actually reached when you move the shifter. The whole mechanism from the manual lever on the transmission up to shifter will have to be inspected. The manual lever should be inspected separately inasmuch as you indicate abnormal resistance in certain gear selections. In addition, it sounds like the shift interlock may not be functioning. The recommended service to obtain a diagnosis of all of these issues is a shift linkage/interlock inspection. If you request that service, the responding certified mechanic will get this taken care of for you. If you have further questions or concerns, do not hesitate to re-contact YourMechanic as we are always here to help you.

When vehicle is in the prosses of shifting there is a vibration. But it runs fine after shifting. What could that be?
ANSWER : Hello, thanks for writing in. From what you describe it would appear that there is more than one issue. Vibrations during shifting can be caused by several things. The first thing I would do is check that the transmission fluid is topped off and that the fluid is clean. Once the fluid is verified I would then carefully examine the transmission and engine mounts to see if they may be worn out. Worn mounts can cause vibration, as well as knocking sounds if they are worn enough. The grinding sound that you are experiencing during starting may be due to a worn flexplate or starter. When the starter is engaged a gear is extended, which contacts teeth on the flexplate, to turn the engine. If either the starter or flexplate teeth wear out, they can produce a grinding sound, which may eventually progress into a more serious issue. I would recommend checking the starter gear for any signs of wear or damage. If you would still like help, consider having one of our expert automotive technicians come to your home or office to look at and diagnose this vibration issue for you, and make any repairs as needed.
