Punctured a Hole In the Material Around the Gas Cap

Hi, I have a stupid question. I was putting gas in my tank, and around the actual gas cap is a material like a covering. It is not metal – it is some type of plastic or vinyl(?). Anyways, I was not looking and I shoved the gas nozzle too hard and I missed the hole where the gasonline goes, and I punctured a hole in the material around the gas cap. I don't even know what is it called, this is the best I can explain it. My question is, I have no idea how gas works. Could this cause the gas to evaporate? Like would the gas diminish slowly because of this hole in the material surrounding the g

Where is the fuel filter located on my Chevrolet? The fuel filter is always going to be found between the fuel tank and the engine. For most vehicles, the fuel filter is located inside the top of the fuel tank, right where it connects with the fuel line, although on some cars if might be elsewhere along the fuel line.
The most common reasons a Chevrolet Equinox smells like gas are the gas cap, the fuel system, or the emissions control system.
The hole in the car or van is usually simply called “the filler.”. The cap that goes over it is usually called “the filler cap.” simple isn`t it?

Cracked Charcoal Canister

If your car smells like gas, but there`s no leak from the gas tank or fuel lines, it`s time to turn to other possibilities. The charcoal canister is a key part of the EVAP (or evaporative emissions control) system in your vehicle.

On most modern cars, fuel injectors located in the intake or inserted directly into the engine itself spray a precise amount of fuel during each cycle. If the seals around these injectors degrade, or a leak develops in a fuel line leading to the engine, you may be able to smell gas.
If the gas cap seal becomes damaged or worn it may cause fuel vapors from the gas tank to leak from the filler neck. This may result in a gasoline odor from the vehicle as a result of the escaping vapors.
Gas cap seals, also known as a fuel filler cap, are important components in a car or truck. The gas cap seal prevents dirt, debris, dust, and other potential problems from entering the gas tank. A reliable seal is extremely important to keep your gas tank clear.
Some technicians may find DTC P0172 (Fuel Trim System Rich) set in the Engine Control Module (ECM). This condition may be caused by driving the vehicle in short intervals, allowing excessive fuel to collect in the crankcase.
A faulty fuel pump can cause all kinds of engine problems. This is because the fuel pump is responsible for the fuel delivery from the tank to the engine. The average lifespan of a fuel pump is 100,000 miles; most pumps last longer than that.
Bad Fuel Pump, Fuel Pressure Sensor Can Trigger `Check Engine` Light, P0087 Code. Your car`s “Check Engine” or “Service Engine Soon” light can flash on for more than 1,400 different reasons.
The average fuel pump lasts for more than 100,000 miles and sometimes longer, so more than likely, you won`t have to worry about it failing for quite a while. But the more miles your car accumulates, the more liable you are to run into a failed fuel pump.
Can a fuel pump go out without warning? Absolutely! A car fuel pump will fail without warning more often than you may think. All things related to a car fuel pumps like the injectors, the pressure regulator, and the car fuel pump itself are the part that are most replaced with the fuel system.
The most common problems reported with the 2016 Chevrolet Equinox are engine and windshield wiper problems, as well as electrical troubles. Driving your car with the P0420 code will only lead to further damage to the catalytic converter. Plus, the problem can affect other parts of the car, such as the fuel line and exhaust systems. This is why it`s important to actively monitor your car`s catalytic convertor to avoid other costly repairs.
Repair Urgency: Get this code fixed as soon as possible to avoid further damage to your emission system and possible engine damage. Diagnosis: The most common cause of P0420 is a bad catalytic converter, but it can be caused by anything from a faulty oxygen sensor to a rich or lean running condition, or misfires.
When trouble code P0014 is set, it means that the exhaust camshaft in Bank 1 is more advanced than the engine computer has told it to be.

What’s going on when gas is constantly slowly leaking from where the gas cap is and the cap was not under pressure when opening?
ANSWER : It is possible the tank was filled too much, that is the gas pump did not shut down when it should. Even if gasoline was not filled right to the top, thermal expansion can later cause the gas to overflow if the tank gets warmer and pressure builds. The too high level will subside quickly as all you have to do is drive 25 miles or so to lose a gallon. If you believe there is a leak or other issue, a certified Mechanic from YourMechanic can perform a leak inspection during a mobile visit.

The gas cap on my car broke off. (The black knob you use to screw in the gas cap.) The gas cap is stuck securely in the fuel neck. How can I remove it?
ANSWER : Hi there. To remove the gas cap that broke off, get a pair of needle nose pliers and use it to remove the gas cap. Try to locate a part of the gas cap that you can grab with the needle nose pliers and turn the gas cap as if you were to take it off. You may need needle nose vice grips for a stronger hold. If you need further assistance with your vehicle, then seek out a professional, such as one from Your Mechanic, to help you with removing the broken gas cap.

Gas cap notification and check engine light came on after getting gas. Car started to sputter and stall out.
ANSWER : Hi there. When the fuel cap is not securely fastened to the tank, it can create vacuum issues inside the tank; which triggers the error code to be stored in the ECU. The error will then trigger the check engine light until that code is reset by a professional digital scanner. If you’re still having sputtering or stalling issues, you should contact a professional mechanic to complete an engine sputtering inspection. This will allow them to diagnose what’s causing this problem and reset any error codes to hopefully correct the issue your Chrysler 300 is experiencing.

ANSWER : If you need a gas cap, especially if you are trying to resolve what you believe might be a cap related fault, use an OEM (dealer supplied) cap. Using a genuine OEM cap of the design supplied when the car was built is the only way you can guarantee that a replacement cap (even if "new") is not still a, or "the", problem. Aftermarket caps are often not identical to the OEM caps. Once you have a genuine OEM cap, if the cap is not clicking once tightened, there could be a problem with the threads on the fuel filler neck or other filler neck defect that will have to be resolved. I recommend that you request a gas cap inspection/diagnostic. A certified Mechanic, dispatched by YourMechanic right to your location, would then get this resolved for you. If you have further questions or concerns, do not hesitate to re-contact YourMechanic as we are always here to help you.

Fuel tether turns with gas cap, causing the gas door (flap) to close.
ANSWER : Hello there, a few common faults will cause your 2004 Hyundai Sonata to have issues removing the gas cap. Other possible faults are excessive vacuum in the EVAP system, or damaged cap threads. A qualified Technician such as one from YourMechanic will be able to inspect your gas cap and replace it if needed.

My gas cap warning light came on
ANSWER : Hi There,
In today’s modern cars equipped with what is called an evaporative emissions control system, the fumes in the gas tank are trapped in something called a charcoal canister where they are stored and then later recirculated into the motor to burn them. This is done in an effort to reduce the fumes and pollution being sent out into the atmosphere. Your gas tank cap is part of this process and requires a specific sealing to the tank filler neck in order for it to properly seal. If the cap is faulty, this will cause the check engine light to come on and will usually cause it to fail an emissions test. I would suggest first installing a new gas cap which should correct your problem. Be sure to note the condition of how the existing cap seals to the filler neck. If the filler neck is damaged, this may also cause the cap not to seal correctly. If this is the case, this will require further inspection to properly fix.
