Oil light on

The oil light is staying on all the time now. I just put oil in it today, but the light won't go off until I drive and then turn the car off and then restart – then the light goes out briefly, but comes back on later. There is also a hard jerking when I shift into different gears. What's causing these problems?
Experienced mechanics share their insights in answering this question :
The oil light typically calls for the oil pressure to be tested. You may need to replace the sending unit or fix the cause of the low oil pressure in the engine. The jerking in the engine would depend on if you have a standard (manual) or an automatic transmission. If you have a standard, since you say you shift gears, then you likely have an engine misfire or broken motor mounts. I recommend that you have the oil light checked by a mechanic in person to diagnose the problem and make any repairs from there.

How to Identify and Fix Common car Problems ?

If the oil light comes on in your car, it means the oil pressure is low. This is bad, and for this reason, if the oil light comes on while you are driving you should stop driving immediately, turn the engine off, and get your car to a certified mechanic.
My oil is fine, but the oil light is still on.

The oil light on your dashboard doesn`t always mean your oil is low, leaking, or dirty. Instead, it might mean that your oil pressure sensor or your oil pump needs to be replaced.

The oil warning light comes on when either the oil temperature gets too high or the oil level or pressure is too low. If the oil is not lubricating the engine effectively it could lead to expensive or even irreparable engine damage, so it`s important to act quickly.
The base problem with these engines is that the piston rings allow small amounts of oil to leak out into the cylinders. Once in the cylinders, it burns, leading to high oil consumption.
If your oil light comes on while you`re driving, you need to stop right away and shut the engine off. If you`ve run out of oil, your engine may seize up and refuse to turn over. If the car abruptly stops while you`re driving, you might be in trouble.
Another indicator that you may soon be due for service is the oil minimum light. This light resembles an oil can with a drop of oil on the spout and will display the letters “MIN”. This light indicates that your vehicle is running low on oil, but does not necessarily mean that it is time for maintenance.
That`s because this indicator illuminates when a vehicle is running a bit low but not dangerously low. Most drivers will find they can run a several hundred to a couple thousand miles before needing to schedule an Audi oil change.
Audi cars, especially ones that come with a 2-liter engine such as the Audi A4 are susceptible to having some common problems that lead to oil leakages. Audi A4 2 liter motor is a reliable machine. However, oil paint and gasket are commonly leaking points on the engine.
A small amounts of oil leaks into cylinders where it burns and leads to high oil consumption. Oil consumption gets progressively worse as grooves in the bores are getting bigger and cause more and more oil to leak around the pistons (usually after 50k – 80k km).
sometimes, there are other ways you can tell if your oil level sensor is bad: Inaccurate Oil Reading. Appearing & Disappearing Oil Light. Check engine Light Coming On.
Your Oil Change Interval

If you drive an Audi luxury vehicle, you should have your filter and oil changed every 10,000 miles or 12 months, whichever comes first. However, many vehicles need oil changes every 5,000 miles or 6 months.

The Oil Warning Light Comes On

If your warning light turns on, you have low oil pressure, and that probably means you need a top-up. When there isn`t enough oil, a sensor picks up the deficit and lets you know. Even if the oil warning light only flickers, you need to have things checked.

Check your oil level by inspecting the dipstick (it often has a red or orange plastic tab on it, under the hood). If you have low oil and you`re pretty sure you`re seeing engine oil drips on your driveway (Remember: look for amber fluid that`s slippery and smells like chemicals), then a leak is likely.
The oil detection sensor works by measuring the level of light. An LED inside the device shines light onto a photoelectric cell. When oil touches the sensing probe it deflects some of the light, activating the unit.
An oil pressure sensor is a device used to measure the oil pressure on an engine. Oil pressure sensor is actually a term that covers at least two different and distinct types of sensor – an oil pressure switch and and oil pressure sender.
The average cost for an Audi A4 Oil Pump Replacement is between $1,120 and $1,245. Labor costs are estimated between $439 and $554 while parts are priced between $680 and $691.
The average cost for an Audi A4 Oil Pressure Sensor Replacement is between $133 and $157. Labor costs are estimated between $90 and $113 while parts are priced between $43 and $43.
The average cost for an Audi A4 Engine Oil Level Sensor Replacement is between $280 and $328. Labor costs are estimated between $114 and $143 while parts are priced between $167 and $185.
Topping up your oil is typically not recommended unless the level is below the minimum mark. If you`re running low on oil, however, topping off may help you get to your nearest Firestone Complete Auto Care for an oil change service.
While your Audi model and driving conditions affect how often you need your oil changed, typically speaking you can go about 5,000 miles before an oil change.
Low oil level is the most common cause of low pressure; it`s also the easiest to fix. Oil changes are important, and between oil changes, it`s equally important to regularly check your motor oil level and top it off as necessary.
Low Oil Pressure

Oil pressure drops can be caused by a clogged filter or a serious oil leak, although leaks don`t usually just happen spontaneously. No matter the cause, if our oil pressure gauge heads downward quickly, do the above. Pull over and call for a tow to an auto shop. Don`t keep driving your vehicle.

Check engine light and oil light comes on before oil change?
ANSWER : Hi There,
As you may know, these lights are designed to come on at specific mileage intervals that are preset by the factory. When your mileage exceeds a certain amount relative to the last oil change, this will trigger the lights to come on. Typically this will include the oil light and the check engine light as there are also other basic service items that are checked during oil changes. I would recommend obtaining an owner’s manual for your car if you do not already have one. This will usually indicate the specific service intervals and recommended maintenance items for your vehicle at the various mileage intervals.

The tire pressure monitor will also come on when the air pressure in the tires has reached a specific threshold relative to the tire design specification. Tire pressure is also impacted by the outside air temperature. For every 10° drop in air temperature outside your tires will lose about 1% in PSI or inflation. As you may know, as the temperature of the air changes the density of the air changes as well causing the tire pressure to be impacted by this. When this happens, the sensors in the wheels will detect this change in tire pressure and cause the tire pressure light to come on. Aside from replacing faulty tire pressure sensors, another way to help prevent this type of fluctuation in tire pressure is by the use of Nitrogen in your tires rather than regular air. As you may know, air is approximately 78% Nitrogen, 21% Oxygen and the rest is water vapor and some other small concentrations of gases. Nitrogen is much less likely to migrate through tire rubber than oxygen. This will maintain your tire pressure much more consistently during large temperature fluctuations.

Low oil pressure light comes on when idle. Check engine light is on as well. Both came on after getting an oil change 3 days ago.
ANSWER : It is possible that they put in the wrong viscosity oil. In rare instances, a defective filter will also cause low pressure. If there is too much oil, it will aerate and cause low pressure. Be sure the oil level is really not above "max". The P2187 code will appear if the oil fill cap is not tight but it will also appear due to a myriad of causes because that code only "generally" identifies a lean running condition. Consequently, numerous parts would have to be tested including the O2 sensor, gas cap seal, manifold air leaks, any vacuum leak anywhere including PCV and EVAP systems, exhaust leaks, and fuel system faults such as failing fuel pump, clogged filter and more. Since the car has relatively low mileage, you would not expect a failed oil pump, although the pressure sensor (or switch) could be bad. However, the occurrence of the oil pressure warning light is quite coincidental to the oil change, thus I would suggest bringing the car back and asking them to redo with a new filter and double check the viscosity of the new oil that they use. If the problem persists after that, you will have to test actual operating oil pressure (at idle for instance) as well as the oil pressure switch. Finally, if the oil pressure warning light comes on continuously, unless the warning circuit itself is malfunctioning, that means the oil pressure is too low to operate the engine without damaging it. Anytime the light comes on for more than literally an instant, you should shut down the car and thus an issue like this obviously has to be repaired.

If you’d like, a YourMechanic certified mechanic can come to your home or place of business to inspect the vehicle and perform an oil pressure light is on inspection to diagnose the vehicle and suggest potential repairs.

Oil consumption. Burning oil. Oil light turns up on idle.
ANSWER : Hi there, thanks for writing in. The valve stem seals are the most common cause of this on your engine. When they fail, it requires that the cylinder heads be removed and rebuilt to fix it. The piston rings can also cause this but they are not as common. Unfortunately there is not anything, not even heavier oil that will fix this. You will need to have the heads rebuilt.

lost all oil pressure, replaced the oil pump, low oil sensor, oil pressure sensor, oil pan gasket,
ANSWER : The fuel pump will not stay on if you loose oil pressure. This is why it is shutting off. The loss of oil pressure may be from bad crankshaft bearings or camshaft bearings. The engine oil pan should be removed and the oil pump needs to be checked to ensure that you put in the pick up tube seal to the pump and connected the pump to the block. Then remove at least one main bearing cap and inspect the bearings for excessive wear and crankshaft damage. If you need some help with this, consider YourMechanic, as a certified technician can help diagnose the issue with your oil pressure firsthand and help you fix it accordingly.

Abs light, emergency brake light, steering wheel assist light, engine light, EPC light, traction control light
ANSWER : Hello, thank you for writing in. The vehicle does utilize a lot of the same sensors for these systems. Are there any other codes that are coming up when this code appears? If so you will want to take these into consideration when processing the repair and making a diagnosis. The module may be bad, and replacing it should fix the problem. The lights should turn off once the main computer recognizes the new module and the sensors sync up. If you believe the sensors need to be cleaned you may do so. Do as minimal as possible to make sure you are not damaging the sensor or disrupting the wiring inside. A bad connection would make the lights stay on. With so many lights that are effected by the module being illuminated, the module is likely bad or does not have a connection. Check the connection first and then resort to replacing the unit. No dash lights, back right tail light is out, no parking lights. Brake lights work though as does head lights.
ANSWER : Hi there. In many cases, when you have electrical problems like you’re describing, it’s caused by multiple electrical component failure. It’s likely that a few electrical relays are not working; especially if you have systems that utilize the same components (such as your brake light and tail lights). I would recommend having a professional mobile mechanic come to your location to complete an electrical problems inspection first, so they can pinpoint what is damaged and recommend the right repairs.

think i put wrong oil in car went few miles lose power car dies oil in spark plugs still starts low oil blinking light before die.
ANSWER : Hello. If you put too thick of an oil in the car, then you may have damaged the engine bearings but this should not have caused oil to get in to the spark plugs unless the oil got into the intake of the engine or one of the pistons rings broke. If you ran it without oil and then tried to put oil in thinking it would be okay after that, then you were not that lucky and broke or damaged all of the rings on the pistons. If you would like to have this looked over, a certified professional from YourMechanic can come to your car’s location to inspect the stalling issue and go over all of the relevant systems for a better diagnosis.
