no signigicant power in take off

I have a bmw w/ automatic transmission. In take off, I feel the car is weak, even when I step on the pedal, it feels choked but it picks up speed at the end. It kind of feels the same way as taking off in 2nd or 3rd gear in a manual transmission. I want to know if my car starts off with 1st gear and then 2nd gear and so on…Is there a way to know what gear my car starts with in takeoff? I appreciate your time…

My car has 150000 miles.
My car has an automatic transmission.

Experienced mechanics share their insights in answering this question :
Hello, thank you for writing in. The automatic transmission starts in first gear always. Considering the age of the vehicle, there are a large number of components that can be contributing to your symptoms. Start with the simplest fixes. When you are experiencing a loss of power like this, you want to look at the transmission and the engine. Start with the transmission fluid, and checking all of the fluids in the vehicle. You may also take a moment to clean the throttle body and make sure that your engine is responding to the driver’s commands. If you are unable to make any difference, you may want to seek professional help. Our service department is available if you need them.

How to Identify and Fix Common car Problems ?

The issue is the clutch is slipping. When the transmission is in second gear, the power train is in an in between gear ratio and will cause the vehicle to have a loss of power during acceleration. I recommend seeking out a professional, such as one from Your Mechanic, to help you diagnose your clutch.
The most common reason your BMW won`t shift gear is that the transmission fluid level is lower than recommended. Even if you add transmission fluid regularly, the low fluid level could be caused by a leak.
Transmission failure is the complete loss of transmission performance. Transmission failure can be caused by slipping, symptomatic noises, lack of fluid due to leaks, overheating, or outside factors that affect the transmission.
One of the most common issues with gearboxes is loss of power, resulting in a lack of acceleration, even in flat-out situations. This happens because of inefficient transmission.
If you start to hear whining, humming, or clunking noises under your BMW, it could be a sign of transmission trouble. These noises could stem from the fact that the transmission fluid is breaking down. The fluid is designed to lubricate the transmission`s components and keep them cool.
You will feel a loss in power while accelerating and at times intermittent jerks. To solve this issue find the fuel filter located in the engine bay or near the fuel tank in your car`s trunk. If the fuel filter is clogged replace it if you have the skills to do so or get it changed at your local mechanic shop.
If you have bad cylinders or misfiring spark plugs, it can consume the power that your car needs to function properly. If oil or antifreeze has made its way into the exhaust system, this will also rob it of the power supply necessary to keep the car moving forward.
There are several causes for your car to lose power significantly while accelerating. The most typical causes of a car not accelerating while driving include a faulty sensor, contaminated fuel or air filters, or a faulty timing belt.
Gears are wheels with teeth that slot together. When one gear is turned the other one turns as well. If the gears are of different sizes, they can be used to increase the power of a turning force. The smaller wheel turns more quickly but with less force, while the bigger one turns more slowly with more force.

If you temporarily have reduced power to the engine and take your car to the garage would you expect them to check the cam belt?
ANSWER : If the reduced power problem was intermittent, a mechanic would not have had a reason to check the cam belt to see if, for example, the belt jumped timing which itself is a cause of reduced power. Shop practice varies widely insofar as customer notification of "required" maintenance. On many vehicles, the list of items involved in such maintenance can be extensive and so unless the customer makes a specific request to be brought up to date, or you have a specific service agreement, you are probably not going to get a careful and complete accounting. The best thing to do is rely on the published maintenance schedule for your car. That schedule is accessible from the Owners Manual and is published on the Internet, too. In lieu of that, if you desire you can book a vehicle inspection and a certified mechanic will come to your location and both review the maintenance schedule with you to see what has or has not been done in the way of required maintenance and/or the mechanic will simply thoroughly inspect the vehicle to determine what may be required. If you have further questions or concerns as you decide what to do, do not hesitate to re-contact YourMechanic because we want you to make the most of your repair dollars and help you get the best possible results.

I am replacing my power brakes booster and need some advice about removing the power unit from the bell crank.
ANSWER : Hi there. When removing the brake booster from a vehicle, you will need to remove the master cylinder and cap off the hydraulic lines. Then go in the cab and remove the pin from the bell crank and unbolt the 4 bolts that hold the booster on. Then remove the booster. Do the opposite to install the booster. If the bell crank pin had a cotter pin to secure it, make sure that you use a new cotter pin. If you need further assistance with removing and installing a brake booster in your vehicle, then seek out a professional, such as one from Your Mechanic, to help you.

Can it take time for power steering leak damage to show up in the rack and pinion?
ANSWER : Hello. Yes, this is possible. A bad pump or leak can starve other vital components in the steering system causing them to weaken. When this occurs it can take days, weeks, or even months for them to finally fail. I am sure they would have mentioned it before if it was evident then. If you want a second opinion, consider YourMechanic, as a certified mechanic can come to your home or office to diagnose your power steering fluid leak and determine what needs to be done.

My car died while on the freeway and I lost all power to my headlights, taillights, blinkers, power steering, windows and door loc
ANSWER : Hi there. Power to operate your vehicle during operation is supplied by the alternator. If you lost power to all systems, it will be caused by either the alternator failing, or an electrical relay or connection being damaged. Circuit tests should be performed to prove the failure(s). It could be that the fusible link(s) have burned near the battery positive cable. If the fusible link(s) have burned, the short that caused the failure needs to be identified. It could be a faulty ignition switch is the source of your issues as well. It would be a good idea to have a professional mechanic come to your location and complete an electrical components inspection so they can determine what is causing your problems.

No power past Starter Solenoid
ANSWER : Hey there. That is a tough one. If your not getting power past the solenoid, the only thing I would consider is that the ground connection from the starter is faulty or the wire itself is frayed. On an older Dodge like your W100, I would suspect electrical wires and connections as being the trouble spots. Check all connections and replace the ground wires to be on the safe side to see if this resolves your issues.

having times when I’m stopped at a light and my Hyundai Accent Sedan 2010 loses power. Sometimes takes a while to restart.
ANSWER : If I interpret what you say correctly, it sounds like an electrical malfunction. I wouldn’t worry right now about the struts and transmission flush. Those are high margin sales that many of the chains push on everybody that comes in the door. I think you might have a problem in the power distribution box or the ignition switch and it is going to take a fairly skilled technician to track it down. To have that done at your convenience, you can contact Your Mechanic. They will send a technician right to your home or office to check out your Hyundai and let you know what it is going to take to fix it.
