Our Ram 1500 was fitted with the 5.9-liter V8 and 4-speed automatic transmission.
Unfortunately, this is not required by the NHTSA VIN standard. Some OEMs still use the same 10-digit VIN patterns for automatic and manual transmission vehicles, meaning that VIN alone will not be enough to determine the vehicle`s transmission type.
You can find your vehicle`s transmission on your window sticker. It will be listed under Vehicle Description on top of the window sticker.
The 4L80E can be told apart from the 4L60E by looking at their transmission fluid pan. This is because the 4L80E has a pan that is oval in shape whereas a rectangular pan is featured by the 4L60E. Another disparity between both devices is the number of bolts used to secure the transmission to the engine.
46RH and 46RE

The 46RE can be found in a number of different rear wheel drive Chrysler products from 1995 through 2002, and some early-production 2003 Dodge Ram pickup trucks that had the 5.9L Magnum V8. In its previous iteration, the 46RH was found in earlier vehicles from 1990 through 1998.

But you can double-check by looking at the Body Code Plate. You`ll find the Body Code plate located in one of two places: The floor pan under the passenger seat or the front face of the radiator closure panel. Digits 13, 14, and 15 relate to the transmission model.
Automatic – Automatic transmissions are the most common type of transmission found in Dodge Ram pickups.

Since the VIN Standard has been in use for over 30 years one should consider the 7th digit to determine the vehicles model year. If the 7th digit is numeric the model year is between 1981 and 2009. If it is an alpha character it is MY2010 or later.
Digits in position 4 through 9 make up the Vehicle Description Section (VDS). The fourth through eighth digits describe your vehicle`s model, body type, restraint system, transmission type, and engine code.
The 45RFE and the 545RFE transmissions are mechanically identical. The notable difference comes down to software. The 545RFE transmission has an electronically activated fifth gear. You will also notice that the unit control module and solenoid pack is different in both transmissions.

Engine swap details needed. I need to know if the swap will fit.
ANSWER : Hi there. When it comes to swapping engines for your vehicle, what you can do is check all of the engine mounts and transmission mounts and make sure that they will work. If the mounts are a little off but there is room, then you may have to retro fit a custom mount. Check the length of the engine and the transmission assembly together. Make sure that the assembly is the same length. It may be okay if it’s a few inches shorter or longer, however, it cannot exceed 3 inches or the assembly will not fit. There has to be room for the engine to move around. Also, keep in mind, the CV shafts may not match up to the transmission and wheel hubs, especially if the transmission is shorter or longer. If you need further assistance with swapping your engine with another engine, then seek out a professional, such as one from Your Mechanic, to help you.

Does this transmission have a transmission filter that can or needs to be change at certain miles?
ANSWER : Most vehicles have an internal transmission filter that can be changed by removing the transmission pan. Some diesel trucks will have an external filter that can be changed just like an oil filter. The transmission filter is usually recommended to be replaced either when the transmission fluid is replaced or around 100,000 miles depending on the manufacturer’s recommendation.

As for which fluid to use, I would recommend looking in you owners manual. Your owners manual will list all fluid specifications that are required for your vehicle including capacity and type. I would always recommend using what the manufacturer recommends for the vehicle.

If you’d like to have your transmission fluid and filter serviced, consider YourMechanic, as one of our mobile technicians can come to your home or office to do so.

Valve Cover Gaskets/ Transmission line fittings to the radiator, do I need them?
ANSWER : Hello. The only way to really know for sure if you need to have these repairs done would be to get a second opinion. If the valve covers are leaking then they should be repaired to prevent further issues. As for the transmission line fittings, if these are leaking at the transmission then they need to be fixed also. Most of the time that does not need anything more than tightening the hoses at the fitting to stop any leakage. If you would like to get a second opinion on these leaks, consider YourMechanic, as a certified mechanic can come to your home or office to diagnose and repair this.

There is automatic transmission fluid in a manual transmission. Is it okay to leave or do I need manual transmission fluid?
ANSWER : This would depend on what the manufacturer recommends. Many manual transmissions do take automatic transmission fluid. If your transmission has ATF in it, it is very likely that it is supposed to have that in there. If not, it is likely that the transmission would not function properly with the wrong fluid. Many manual transmissions will also take engine oil as a lubricant. The best way to know for sure is to check your owner’s manual or call your local General Motors dealership to inquire.

Can too much transmission fluid cause speedometer malfunctions?
ANSWER : Hi there. In most cases when you overfill the transmission fluid it can cause excessive foaming of the fluid or possible internal component failure due to excessive pressure inside the hydraulic lines. Sensors like the speed sensors however are rarely impacted by this situation. However, in regards to the possibility of probability of this; I would say perhaps a 10% chance.

I need to know how many transmission/ engine mounts I have and if they’re front or rear mounts.
ANSWER : There are 4 mounts that you need to replace. There is a main side engine mount, a thrust front engine mount, a main transmission mount on the transmission, and a thrust transmission mount on the back of the engine and transmission assembly.
