Installed incorrectly, they can suck the power right out of your battery. If you have an aftermarket car alarm, then this is one of the first things to check when you have a draining car battery. It could be as simple as a frayed wire touching a metal part and causing an intermittent connection.

Use Your Key and Both Lock And Unlock The Driver`s Side Door

Locking and unlocking the driver`s side door can reset the switch and cause the alarm to cease. If the driver`s side door doesn`t work, try the passenger door. Further, try turning your vehicle on as well.

There are simple instructions if you want to know how to disable a car alarm permanently. You should just unlock the door, start the car, remove the fuse, or disconnect the battery of the car. When working with electronics, it`s crucial that you guard yourself against injury.
The beeping sound the low battery alarm makes can become very annoying but can be disconnected by removing the drained battery from your home alarm system panel. Make sure to replace the drained battery with a new one to keep your home alarm system functioning properly.
Disconnect the battery

Your car alarm runs off power from your car`s main battery or a backup battery. Disconnecting the battery can stop your alarm, but we again only recommend this step if nothing else works AND if you understand how to safely remove a car battery.

Car alarms rely on the electronic component of the vehicle, and disconnecting the battery should both silence the siren and reset your alarm. Open up the hood, locate the battery, and with a wrench, remove the negative terminal. Then reconnect it after a minute has passed.
Replace the battery and see if that resolves it. If the alarm to continues to be triggered, then you may have a wider electrical fault with the vehicle. Electrical issues such as a weak battery, a faulty alternator, or loose connections can cause the alarm to malfunction.
Car alarms may seem like they blare for eternity, but really it`s only about 30 seconds. Faulty or broken car alarms can go on for much longer, usually due to a dead battery or key fob not working.
Check the door lock

In some cases, the car`s anti-theft system is linked to a door lock mechanism. To disable it, you need to locate a small switch or release lever on the door panel and engage it. This will cause the car`s security system to be disabled.

As a general rule, you should aim to replace the batteries in your system at the five-year mark if the batteries have not yet been replaced since you installed the system. Sometimes, you`ll know that it is time to replace the battery on your alarm system if the low battery warning comes on without good reason.

If it goes off constantly, it will drain the battery fairly rapidly. Worse, it CAN drain the battery within only a week or two, even if it`s not set. The alarm draws current constantly, albeit it`s not supposed to be much. I`ve measured car alarms that drew 3–400 mA, even if they weren`t set.

A key fob will constantly try to communicate with the car. And that does cause a slight drain on the battery, but generally that won`t completely drain a healthy car battery,” says Mike Monticello, Consumer Reports` road test manager. “The key fob is, in a sense, causing the issue.

Replaced alternator on car 2 times each time shows it’s charging 14v let car run for a little bit then test drive and car voltage
ANSWER : There are reports that the replacement alternators will not communicate with the engine computer and will not charge correctly. I recommend using only the manufacturer approved replacement part. It can be new or remanufactured but approved for use in the vehicle. Some lower cost alternators on the aftermarket will have charging problems since they will not communicate with the ECM on the vehicle and will stop charging.

I put the wrong key in my car and a few weeks later my car just shut down and it will not start I believe it’s the computer but…
ANSWER : Hi there. What had happened is the wrong key set the security to the vehicle. This is to prevent the vehicle from starting with the wrong keys. Try removing the battery cables (+) and (-) for 13 minutes. During that time, put the original key in the ignition and turn it on. Activate everything in the car even though there is no power. Battery drained and car key couldn’t open car door.
ANSWER : Hi there. The battery is draining for a parasitic load applied to the battery over night. This will drain the battery to needing a charge or needing a replacement. If the alarm was installed and it was for a newer vehicle, as long as the wiring is correctly installed into the vehicle, the year of the alarm should not matter. The alarm was probably installed on the wrong circuit causing the other circuit to have a load applied to it when the key is turned off. I recommend disabling the alarm and see if the battery does not discharge. If so, then hook up the alarm to a different circuit isolating it from any other circuits. If you need further assistance with your battery draining, then seek out a professional, such as one from Your Mechanic, to help you.

Car didn’t start this morning, do I need a new battery or did I drain my battery? (although I can’t seem to think of how I did?)
ANSWER : Hi there!

First off, don’t worry about being a new car owner – everybody has gone through this same situation at least one time in their lives. When the radio or other accessories are turned on while the engine is not running, the power is drained from the battery. If it’s too long, it can cause the battery to prematurely wear out. However, since your vehicle is a 2010, it’s possible that the battery was on it’s last legs as it was. Usually when the car starts, the alternator charges the battery. But if the battery is worn out or old; it usually means the battery needs to be replaced. We have several professional mechanics from YourMechanic.com who can complete the battery installation for you.

Car keeps cranking over when not holding key, but still wont start
ANSWER : It sounds like you have 2 problems here, the starter and an engine stalling problem. The starter problem is probably the starter solenoid, a power switch (integrated into the starter assembly) that takes a small current from the ignition switch and engages a large current at the starter. The contacts in the solenoid can burn over time, "sticking", which can cause the starter "run-on" like you described, and a "no crank" condition, because the same burned contacts don’t pass heavy current very well. The poor idling may be due to a dirty idle air control valve, dirty throttle body, or air leak in the intake system of the engine. I would recommend having YourMechanic dispatch a mobile, professional mechanic to your location to do a (Starter Replacement)[https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/starter-replacement] and car starting trouble inspection.

Can disconnecting your car horn cause your car battery to drain over night?
ANSWER : A horn being disconnected will not cause the battery to get drained. The battery being drained or low on charge after sitting should first charge and test the battery then check to see if the vehicle has a draw on the battery. There is a possibility that the alternator is drawing the battery down and should be tested by a mechanic like one from YourMechanic.

Battery keeps getting drained while the car is off during the night
ANSWER : Hello there, thanks for writing in about your 2009 Chevrolet Aveo5. Batteries that drain overnight are not uncommon. This is called a parasitic drain and can have many different causes. The most likely are any aftermarket electrical accessories, such as the radio, a power seat, window switch, dome light or wiring fault. I recommend having a certified technician look over the vehicle’s electrical system in order to diagnose why the battery keeps draining and make the necessary repairs.
