My car has an automatic transmission.

Experienced mechanics share their insights in answering this question :
If the starter and battery are new, and the battery is 100% charged, you probably have a large voltage drop (due to high resistance bad connections or a device fault) somewhere in the starting circuit. The starter circuit (wiring, switches, relay, etc.) will have to be diagnosed. If you want these steps performed by a certified Mechanic, dispatched by YourMechanic right to your location, please request a no start diagnostic – starting circuit and the responding certified mechanic will get this taken care of for you. Engine issues

If you`ve replaced your battery but the engine still won`t start, it could actually be an engine problem. A seized engine won`t turn over, and that often resembles a bad starter or dead battery. If you suspect that your problem stems from an engine issue, it could take hours to diagnose and repair.

The most common reasons a Saturn Vue won`t start are a dead battery, an alternator problem, or failed starter.
Why won`t my car start but the battery is good? If your car won`t start but the battery is good, the most common cause is a faulty starter – though it could also be to do with your fuel. You may have insufficient fuel to get the car going.
If your vehicle won`t start, it`s usually caused by a dying or dead battery, loose or corroded connection cables, a bad alternator or an issue with the starter. It can be hard to determine if you`re dealing with a battery or an alternator problem.
Press the Lock button on your remote car starter. Within five seconds of turning it on, turn your key back to the “off” position (or press the start button again). Repeat the on-off cycle three more times—you`ll do four in total.
The batteries connectors can jostle loose sometimes or terminals might corrode. This will either cause the engine to shut down completely or the battery won`t fully transmit power. To solve this problem tighten your connectors. However, corrosion related problems require you to clean the battery regularly.
Bad Sensors

One common culprit for this problem is the crankshaft position sensor, which measures the position and speed of the crankshaft. The computer uses the information from this sensor to know when to fire the spark plugs. If the sensor isn`t working, the spark plugs won`t fire, keeping the engine from starting.

Turning your key turns your battery on, so if you`ve turned your key all the way and the lights come on, but the engine doesn`t turn over, your starter motor could be the culprit. Any signs of electrical failure could also indicate the starter motor needs help.
The most common car electrical system problems are problems with your car battery, an alternator that isn`t working properly, loose or failed spark plugs, a fatigued solenoid or starter, bad battery cables, electrical fuses that are blown, loose wires, or problems with your ignition switch.

It might be a battery or alternator problem.

If the source of the clicking is electrical, the starter (a small motor energized by the battery that gets the engine running) doesn`t have enough juice to stay powered. So instead, it rapidly turns on and off and produces a clicking noise!

ANSWER : The issue you are having is probably due to an intermittent fault in the starter motor itself or a deficiency in the starter electrical circuit, for example a large voltage drop due to a poor ground or a high resistance connection. These issues can be readily diagnosed and resolved on a mobile basis if you request a hard starting diagnostic. If you request that diagnostic, the responding certified mechanic will get this resolved for you promptly. Based on Toyota’s Factory Service Manual, the battery should not be disconnected if the vehicle engine is running. The battery acts as a large resistive voltage sink and consequently taking the battery out of the circuit, while the alternator is still running, can create a voltage spike on the car’s electrical system which is not good for voltage sensitive components such as the engine computer. New battery, car still wont start even with jumper cables.
ANSWER : If the battery is new and fully charged, and you turn the key to the "start" position and you hear nothing that means that either the starter circuit supplying the starter motor (ignition switch, wiring, relay, fuse, etc.) has a defect or the starter motor/solenoid itself is faulty. The way the two possibilities are distinguished is simply to check for power to the starter motor. If power is being supplied to the starter, and yet the starter motor is not working, then it is condemned and replaced.. If power is not being supplied to the starter motor when the key is in the "start" position, then the reason why has to be determined. In the case of no power, wiring faults could be an issue inasmuch as corrosion on starter circuit terminals or circuit connections could reduce the current available to the starter motor enough that the starter just won’t work adequately especially in cold weather when the demand on the motor is the greatest. Basically, you have to perform voltage drop tests along the entire circuit to ensure the circuit itself is in good condition. To resolve this issue, the recommended service is a no start diagnostic and the responding certified mechanic will quickly let you know of the root cause of the problem.

The starter off and on wont turn over when trying to crank the car.
ANSWER : Hello, thank you for writing in. Often when starters are installed they come with a shim. These shims need to be installed to help hold the starter at the proper angle. If the angle is off the gears may not mesh correctly putting excess pressure on it that the starter cannot compete with. If the starter did not come with a shim, or you do not have it anymore, you can likely purchase or fabricate one relatively easily. If this does not solve the issue, make sure there are no wires that are being pinched or shorted out when the full weight of the car is being supported. I put in a new starter and battery and my Jeep will not start. Please help me get my Jeep to start.
ANSWER : Hi there. Check to see if the wiring to the battery and the starter are tight and clean. A bad connection will cause a no start situation. If the battery cables and wires are all tight and clean, then go in the cab and turn on the ignition switch and see if any thing in the cab works.

If nothing comes on, then check the fuse box for any blown fuses. If all the fuse are good in the cab and under the hood, then the ignition switch needs replaced. If the ignition switch is good and the accessories come on, then either the starter relay in the fuse box has failed or the wires from the starter relay to the ignition switch has become burned or loose. Check the wires from the starter relay on the starter to the ignition switch. If everything checks out to be good, then the ignition switch needs replaced.

If you need further assistance troubleshooting your vehicle, then seek out a technician, such as one from YourMechanic, that can assist you with your no start situation and help you with the power surge.

ANSWER : If your vehicle was not starting but was turning over, I would have advised against the starter replacement. If the engine will turn over, the starter is doing its job. If you have an aftermarket security system on your vehicle, are unable to start your car, and are unable to lock and unlock the doors, I would recommend having the aftermarket security system inspected. The best place to have this done would be the place that it was originally installed as they would have the best knowledge of the system. This could be related to wiring, control modules, or other related components. Once the security system has been inspected, the repair procedure will be more clear.

Car will not crank after putting in a new starter. Forced starter to start up and engine starts but stalls out. Will the security continue to cut off fuel while force starting?
ANSWER : Hi there. Forcing the starter to engage to make the engine run without the ignition engaging the starter will continue to keep the security on. This is a safety feature that keeps people from stealing your vehicle. I recommend replacing the ignition switch and checking the wires to make sure that they are all tight and clean. If you need further assistance with diagnosing your ignition problem, then seek out a professional, such as one from Your Mechanic, to help you.

Since the starter was replaced in 2014, is it possible that the starter needs replaced again as car is not able to start?
ANSWER : It would help knowing the model of Mercury car you have for more specific advice. It would be uncommon for a starter to only last less than two years. I would have the starting system diagnosed by a trustworthy technician to make sure you do not have a bad cable that is not getting enough power to the starter.
