My 2002 Yukon will not shift into park but will shift into all the other gears. Whats wrong?

The car just suddenly will not shift into park. it will start in neutral and shift into all the other gears but it will not shift into park when parking it.

My car has 220000 miles.
My car has an automatic transmission.

Experienced mechanics share their insights in answering this question :
Hello,
Generally, when a vehicle does not shift into park as you describe, this indicates that a shift linkage has been broken or some other blockage such in the mechanism has caused it to not properly allow the shift linkage to move the transmission into park. Other things that may also cause this are things like a worn out ignition key tumbler which causes the transmission interlock to inadvertently activate when the vehicle is not in neutral. I would suggest having a professional from YourMechanic come to your location to take a look at your vehicle to properly diagnose.

How to Identify and Fix Common car Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced mechanics :

Common reasons for this to happen:

Transmission cables usually break due to stretching, which happens over time or can result due to speed shifting or jamming the car into gear. Stretched Transmission Cable: Prior to breaking, a transmission cable will stretch. When this happens the car may be hard to put in park.

The bushings can make it hard to move the transmission from one gear to the next, even though you eventually do get there. Unusual sounds can indicate bushing problems as well. With bushings, thumping, bumping, squealing, and whirring sounds are most common.
Transmission won`t engage or stay in gear

If when you put your vehicle into gear and it won`t move, this may be a problem with low transmission fluid due to a leak, the shifter, shifter cable, or it could even be a problem in the valve body of your automatic transmission.

According to NHTSA, GM has recalled certain 2009 and 2014 vehicles, including the GMC Acadia, due to “Shift to Park” issues that violated some Federal Motor Vehicles Safety Standards. Transmission issues are widespread across several model year Acadia vehicles.
Most automatic gearboxes will let you select between `P` (for park), `R` (reverse), `N` (neutral) and `D` (drive). Park should only be used when you`re stopped and getting out of the car. This `locks` the transmission, preventing it from rolling away (but you still need to apply the handbrake when parked as well).
One of the most common indicators of a faulty automatic transmission linkage is frequent overheating of the engine. You might also notice that the transmission fluid is significantly reduced. Aside from those, there will be banging and clanging noises while you are driving.
Bad Transmission Control Module Symptoms

Slow Acceleration: It takes longer than normal for your vehicle to pick up speed. Gear Slippage: Your transmission switches gears without warning or without you shifting. Inability to Shift: You can`t shift out of neutral.

If your car has an automatic transmission, the shift solenoid will shift the gears for you. The transmission control unit will take the information from the engine and speed sensors along with other parts of your vehicle to then decide when to shift gears for power and fuel efficiency.
A faulty solenoid can cause problems such as erratic shifting, failure to downshift, or being stuck in neutral. Furthermore, a broken solenoid wire will cause severe vibrations or higher than average voltage.
a problem with one or more of the solenoids can cause a lack of pressure, resulting in hard, soft or delayed shifts. a failed shift solenoid can also cause transmission slippage, where your engine revs faster but the car stays at the same speed.
With the transmission in park (P), your vehicle locks the transmission and prevents the wheels from turning. Always come to a complete stop before putting your vehicle into and out of park (P).
ABOUT FRONT AND REAR PARK ASSIST. Available Front and Rear Park Assist provides alerts of nearby detected vehicles and objects in front of or behind your vehicle to help you park and avoid collisions.
A Park Lock Mechanism is a mechanical device that is placed in automatic and EV (Electric Vehicle) transmissions to prevent the unintentional rollback of the vehicle when the vehicle is brought to a stop.
Look for the shift lock override slot. You will find this on the shifter console that is by the shifter lever. Typically, you will find a small plastic covering over the slot. Remove the cap.
How important is replacing a Shift Lock Solenoid? Unfortunately, if it fails it will lock you out and you`re stuck there. No driving for you. There are, apparently, some ways to override the system, but they are not recommended.
Transmission fluid level is typically checked with the engine running at normal operating temperature. You may not get an accurate reading if the transmission fluid is cold. The vehicle should be in a specific gear (usually PARK or NEUTRAL) and on a stable, level surface.
If your vehicle rolls forward or backward more than an inch or so after placing the shifter lever into “P” Park, the parking pawl may be badly worn. If your vehicle rolls more than a couple of inches, or rolls freely, after placing the shifter into Park, the parking pawl may be broken.
Rusting, power failure, irregular pressure, missing equipment, an incorrect amount of voltage or current, dirt stuck in the system and corrosion are some of the possible reasons why a solenoid valve may not properly close or open.
Common signs include the indicator not matching the gear and the vehicle not turning off, starting in another gear, or not going into gear at all.
The Transmission Range Sensor tells the PCM the position of the transmission shifter. The PCM uses this information to control which gears of the transmission to enable or disable. When the TR sensor fails it can cause wrong gear starts, no upshifts, or what feels like a falling-out-of-gear condition.
For example, in some situations an oxygen sensor can cause poor shifting in your transmission – if the engine isn`t running correctly, the transmission control module may misinterpret when and where it`s supposed to be shifting, causing erratic behavior at the transmission.
Error code P0700 signifies that a malfunction has been detected in your vehicle`s transmission controls. Most modern automobiles feature a specific control module as it relates to the vehicle`s automatic transmission. This module is known as the Transmission Control Module (TCM).
Gear Shifting Issues – When the ECM is faulty or failing, it will throw off the timing of fuel settings of the engine and could result in your vehicle struggling to change gears or not being able to shift at all.
Erratic or Random Shifting

One of the most serious PCM failure symptoms is irregular shifting. This generally happens because of a faulty sensor, or because water has damaged some of the circuits in your car`s PCM or TCM. If your automatic transmission vehicle isn`t shifting normally, take it to a mechanic immediately.

My 2002 Yukon will not shift into park but will shift into all the other gears. Whats wrong?
ANSWER : Hello,
Generally, when a vehicle does not shift into park as you describe, this indicates that a shift linkage has been broken or some other blockage such in the mechanism has caused it to not properly allow the shift linkage to move the transmission into park. Gear shift is broken off. The car is stuck in park and cannot be moved – 2002 Ford Explorer
ANSWER : Hello. If your vehicle’s shifter was broken, then it will need to be replaced before the vehicle can be driven again. Once the shifter is replaced, I would also recommend taking care of the issue that is requiring you to use the key in order to shift the vehicle. It sounds like your vehicle’s shifter interlock solenoid may be bad, as the vehicle should not have trouble shifting out of park under normal circumstances.

Similar issues can also be caused by wiring problems or an issue with the stoplight switch. I would recommend having a professional technician, such as one from YourMechanic, come to your location to diagnose the cause of the stuck shifter.

Car in park shifter will move through gears but wont shift through the gears its stuck in neutral have emergency brake on so it wont roll
ANSWER : From what you’ve described, it sounds like the shifter cable came off at the transmission or the shifter. I’d suggest checking the shift linkage on the transmission to see if the cable came off. This is due to the connector end bushing falling apart and not being able to hold the cable on any longer. Some cables have to be replaced as a whole and as with others the bushing can be replaced to fix the cable. I’d suggest contacting a certified technician, such as one from YourMechanic, who can come diagnose your shifting issue and make the necessary repairs to your vehicle. Good luck.

Car begins to roll when the shift lever is in park had only starts in the neutral position, just rebuilt the transmission
ANSWER : The neutral start safety switch could be misaligned or a fault in the linkage and./or cable could be contributing to the problem because "Park" is not actually reached when you move the shifter. The whole mechanism from the manual lever on the transmission up to shifter will have to be inspected. The manual lever should be inspected separately inasmuch as you indicate abnormal resistance in certain gear selections. In addition, it sounds like the shift interlock may not be functioning. The recommended service to obtain a diagnosis of all of these issues is a shift linkage/interlock inspection. If you request that service, the responding certified mechanic will get this taken care of for you. If you have further questions or concerns, do not hesitate to re-contact YourMechanic as we are always here to help you.

my car gear is stuck in drive but the gear shift goes to park car is in acc postion wont crank or swicth to off to remove the key
ANSWER : Hi there, thanks for writing in.

It sounds like you most likely have a broken shift cable, or a failed shifter assembly. A failure of either part would allow you to move the shifter handle to park, while the transmission actually remains in drive. Because it could be either of these parts, I would recommend having a qualified professional, such as one from YourMechanic, diagnose your shift issue.

My gear shift doesn’t shift to any other gear its stuck on neutral. I open the gear assembly and I can pull a lever which allows me to move it.
ANSWER : Hi there. The shifter interlock solenoid is not working and needs replaced. The shifter interlock solenoid makes the shifter lock in place so it does not move if you accidentally move it into another gear. If you need further assistance with your shifter not working, then seek out a professional, such as one from Your Mechanic, to help you.

I got sound when I shift to 3rd gear and it’s get hard to put shift to second gear when car is in 3rd gear.
ANSWER : Hello. It sounds as though the synchronizers in the transmission, which are used to adjust transmission internal gear speed when upshifting or downshifting are possibly worn out or you are shifting a bit too fast. It is also possible that the clutch is not releasing fully when you press the clutch pedal. In some conditions, utilizing synthetic gear oil in the transmission can help the quality of gear shifting. If the clutch is not fully releasing an inspection of the clutch hydraulics is a good idea. I would recommend having an inspection of the hard shift completed by a mobile, professional mechanic, such as one from YourMechanic, who will come to your location, diagnose this problem, give you an accurate assessment of damage and cost for repairs.

Won’t shift past 2nd gear . It drives normal to 2nd gear but wont shift into 3r – 2000 Ford F150 4×4
ANSWER : Hello – I don’t think this is related to switching back to 2WD per se. There is a shift position sensor on the side of the transmission, and it’s possible that the snow activity caused moisture and/or dirt to get into the sensor. I would recommend a transmission inspection by a mobile, professional mechanic, such as one from YourMechanic, who will come to your location, diagnose this problem, give you an accurate assessment of damage and cost estimate for repairs.
