Low Oil PSI

I bought a 05 Nissan Altima Se-r a few months back. It has a v6 3.5 liter motor with 97,555 miles in it. I got an oil change at 94,949. Recently I've noticed when I start the car the psi is just about 90. After driving 3-4 miles the psi drops to around 30 but will get up to 60 when my rpms are 2,000. My main concern is that when I'm stopped at a stop sign or red light, the psi drops to 0 and my oil light comes on. Once I accelerate gently the psi jumps back to about 30 again. This first happened about two weeks ago. I checked my oil level after it happened and the levels were fine. I c
Experienced mechanics share their insights in answering this question :
Hi Roger. Although it is possible that your catalytic converter might be wearing out, it’s most likely not the source of your oil pressure problem. Typically when an engine develops excessive sludge (caused by carbon deposits from burning gasoline) will collect on the oil pump pick-up screen and restrict oil pressure. When this happens, it is best to replace the oil pump to ensure proper lubrication, keep the engine cool and operating at optimal temperatures and performance. The reduced oil pressure could also be due to the wrong size oil filter being used. I would recommend having your oil and filter changed again and see if the pressure problem resolves itself. If not, please contact a professional mechanic to complete an oil pressure inspection, so they can pinpoint the source of this problem and recommend the right repairs.

How to Identify and Fix Common car Problems ?

In general, if the pressure is below 20 PSI or under the normal range on the gauge it requires your immediate attention. This is also the case when your oil pressure light is coming on. Not diagnosing and treating the problem could lead to serious damage and high repair costs.
Low oil pressure means internal components of the engine are not being lubricated correctly. An engine that`s not properly lubricated can get damaged and can cause total failure. If the engine has the correct amount of oil, then the oil warning light could be from a sensor, the oil pump, or even low oil pressure.
Oil Level Is Too Low

The oil level dropping below the minimum dipstick line is one of the most common causes of low oil pressure. This can happen at any time, even if you`ve recently had an oil change. Over time, engines burn oil more quickly.

The ideal oil pressure varies depending on the car brand and model, but generally, the ideal oil pressure is between 25-65 PSI.
Tire pressure between 32 to 35 PSI is most suitable for most vehicles. However, one can go as low as 20 PSI (although that is not recommended). Anything below 20 PSI is considered a flat tire. PSI stands for Pounds per Square Inch.
When the oil pressure is low, it indicates something is not working properly. It also means there likely is not enough lubricant moving through the system. Keep in mind that lubricant starvation will lead to metal-to-metal contact and machine failure.
Low oil pressure is no joke. Keep driving when the pressure drops and you will seriously damage your engine. If your oil light comes on or you see any other signs of low oil pressure, have your engine serviced as soon as possible.
When engine oil pressure drops, friction between different parts increases. This results in a steep decline in engine performance. Watch out for common signs of decreased engine performance such as a reduction in fuel economy, loss of power, and engine stalling.
Most carmakers suggest that oil pressure should be around 30 PSI when running idle and about 60 PSI when the engine is running at higher speeds. If you check that the oil pressure is lower than 20 PSI. If you notice that the oil pressure is low than 20 PSI, you should check as soon as possible.
Pressure, in this case, means the force it takes to move oil through the various parts of an engine. We used the term “PSI,” which means pounds per square inch. This is a measure of pressure.
Tire pressures should be between 32 and 35 pounds per square inch. A ten-degree temperature change will result in a one-psi change in tire pressure. That`s fine! Even though 28 psi is less than the necessary pressure, it will not harm your vehicle.
So, when filling your tires, the recommended tire pressure is the best compromise between handling, comfort, fuel economy and safety. But it`s certainly fine to go over the recommended inflation by a psi or two. And going over is always better than going under.
If your oil light comes on, you should try to have your vehicle inspected by a professional mechanic as soon as possible. Note, though, that driving around a bit more won`t destroy anything. Generally speaking, you have about 2 weeks or 500 miles of driving before a flashing oil light turns into a legitimate problem.
The faster the motor spins, (RPM, revolutions per minute) the faster the oil pump spins creating higher oil pressure.
Leaking in the vehicle`s oil passages can also lead to low pressure. Internal oil leaks can be caused by a myriad of factors, including worn piston rings and valve seals or PCV valve failure.
One way to fix oil pressure in this case is to use a higher-viscosity oil, such as switching from 5W-20 to 10W-30. This slight change in oil viscosity can make up for the increased bearing clearance, increasing oil pressure back to normal.
Thicker oil will generally increase oil pressure but may reduce lubrication.
If you use your vehicle in urban conditions, often sit in traffic jams, drive at high speeds, and your car is old, buy oil with the 5w40 viscosity. But if you prefer calm driving, and fuel economy and eco-friendliness are important for you – choose a product with 5w30 marking.
Low oil pressure at idle only, will most often mean that the engine is low on oil. As more power is applied to the engine via acceleration, the pressure builds up inside the engine. Thereby causing the pressure to read as “normal”.
It`s best to use the oil viscosity recommended in the owner`s manual, but using a slightly thinner or thicker oil (lighter or heavier viscosity) generally poses no long-term harm.
You can use 10w30 instead of 5w30 oil since both meet the SAE standard for viscosity at operating temperatures. Generally, the viscosity difference between the two is neglectable. However, it`s important to note that a 10w30 oil will move slower than a 5w30 oil in cold environments.
The oil pressure generated in most engines should be about 10 psi per every 1000 revolutions per minute (rpm), peaking around 55-65 psi.
Hi There, This is completely normal for the oil pressure to increase when accelerating. The oil pressure inside the motor increases as the motor works harder. Your oil pressure switch reads this change in pressure and relays this to the oil pressure gauge.
minimum 13 psi (90 kpa) @ curb idle. 25-110 psi (170-758 kpa) @ 3000 rpm.

lost all oil pressure, replaced the oil pump, low oil sensor, oil pressure sensor, oil pan gasket,
ANSWER : The fuel pump will not stay on if you loose oil pressure. This is why it is shutting off. The loss of oil pressure may be from bad crankshaft bearings or camshaft bearings. The engine oil pan should be removed and the oil pump needs to be checked to ensure that you put in the pick up tube seal to the pump and connected the pump to the block. Then remove at least one main bearing cap and inspect the bearings for excessive wear and crankshaft damage. If you need some help with this, consider YourMechanic, as a certified technician can help diagnose the issue with your oil pressure firsthand and help you fix it accordingly.

Low oil pressure light comes on when idle. Check engine light is on as well. Both came on after getting an oil change 3 days ago.
ANSWER : It is possible that they put in the wrong viscosity oil. In rare instances, a defective filter will also cause low pressure. If there is too much oil, it will aerate and cause low pressure. Be sure the oil level is really not above "max". The P2187 code will appear if the oil fill cap is not tight but it will also appear due to a myriad of causes because that code only "generally" identifies a lean running condition. Consequently, numerous parts would have to be tested including the O2 sensor, gas cap seal, manifold air leaks, any vacuum leak anywhere including PCV and EVAP systems, exhaust leaks, and fuel system faults such as failing fuel pump, clogged filter and more. Since the car has relatively low mileage, you would not expect a failed oil pump, although the pressure sensor (or switch) could be bad. However, the occurrence of the oil pressure warning light is quite coincidental to the oil change, thus I would suggest bringing the car back and asking them to redo with a new filter and double check the viscosity of the new oil that they use. If the problem persists after that, you will have to test actual operating oil pressure (at idle for instance) as well as the oil pressure switch. Finally, if the oil pressure warning light comes on continuously, unless the warning circuit itself is malfunctioning, that means the oil pressure is too low to operate the engine without damaging it. Anytime the light comes on for more than literally an instant, you should shut down the car and thus an issue like this obviously has to be repaired.

If you’d like, a YourMechanic certified mechanic can come to your home or place of business to inspect the vehicle and perform an oil pressure light is on inspection to diagnose the vehicle and suggest potential repairs.

after replacing oil pan gasket, low oil level light stays on, but oil level and pressure are normal?
ANSWER : Bob: Thanks for your inquiry. Oil level and oil pressure are measured using separate sensing systems. If the level sensing feature stopped working at the time the pan gasket was replaced, either the level sensor was damaged, not reconnected, or the wire harness and terminal were damaged. There is a possibility that the wire harness was just never re-connected to the level sensor so check that first. If you desire that this problem be diagnosed by a certified Mechanic, dispatched by YourMechanic right to your location, please request a warning light diagnostic – oil level and the responding certified mechanic will get this taken care of for you. If you have further questions or concerns, do not hesitate to re-contact YourMechanic as we are always here to help you.

think i put wrong oil in car went few miles lose power car dies oil in spark plugs still starts low oil blinking light before die.
ANSWER : Hello. If you put too thick of an oil in the car, then you may have damaged the engine bearings but this should not have caused oil to get in to the spark plugs unless the oil got into the intake of the engine or one of the pistons rings broke. If you ran it without oil and then tried to put oil in thinking it would be okay after that, then you were not that lucky and broke or damaged all of the rings on the pistons. If you would like to have this looked over, a certified professional from YourMechanic can come to your car’s location to inspect the stalling issue and go over all of the relevant systems for a better diagnosis.

Truck has oil in it but when i am idling at a stoplight, the oil pressure gauge drops and says low oil 2003 Dodge Ram 1500 4.7L
ANSWER : Hello – assuming an adequate oil level, which you have checked, there may be a real oil pressure problem. It’s worth checking with a know working oil pressure gauge, so that you can get the real readings (i.e. 40 psi at running RPM, 10 psi at idle – both hot – would be acceptable). It’s expected that your oil pressure will drop at a hot idle, as long as you have good pressure above idle. Low hot pressures all around are indications of excessive connecting rod or crankshaft main bearings, camshaft bearings, or oil flow bleeding off elsewhere in the engine. For professional assistance, I recommend a low oil pressure inspection performed by a mobile, professional mechanic, such as one from YourMechanic, who will come to your location, diagnose this problem, and give you an accurate assessment of damage and cost estimate for repairs.

I have low oil psi changed switch and screen psi came up and went back down could it be the oil pump
ANSWER : You will need to have a mechanical gauge hooked in with sender to see if the pressure is dropping to zero after it warms up. If it drops to zero then the oil pump pickup may be getting clogged and the pump may be going bad. Have the pressure test done by a mechanic like one from YourMechanic and then if pump is bad have it changed with a new pump screen.

Stop car check oil warning
ANSWER : This light will usually come on when one of two things are happening. Either the motor is in fact low on oil or the oil pressure sending unit is not working properly and may be producing a faulty reading. I would recommend first, to check the actual oil level in the motor by using the dipstick. Be sure the oil level reaches the "full" mark. If this registers as "full" then you likely have a faulty oil pressure sending unit. I would recommend having an expert from YourMechanic come to your location to take a look at your vehicle to determine what may be causing your low oil pressure light to come on.

Do I need to change the oil filter and drain and refill the oil when the oil is low or do I just drain and refill the oil? 2014 Toyota Corolla
ANSWER : Hello – great question! Good for you as a new (to you) car owner, being cautious with a used, unfamiliar car. For sure, check it often for the first few months until you get a sense for whether it consumes oil , and how quickly. If you are inside an oil change interval – whether 3K or 5K miles – and it’s low, simply add enough oil to get the level back up to the "Max" marker on the dipstick. Repeat if necessary before the next oil & filter change. Change the oil and filter at the prescribed interval.
