Lights blinking after water got in a 1996 Mercedes Benz

My Mercedes Benz 1996 has got about an inch of water and the lights started blinking. I tried to turn them but the battery and light turn on. Should I buy a new battery and try again?
Experienced mechanics share their insights in answering this question :
The Battery Light typically just means that the alternator isn’t charging the battery. If you get through any water in Mercedes, those cars are made up of many electronics, so I hope you have full coverage. If you don’t have full coverage on that car, it will cost you a fortune to fix the electronics.

With that said, get another battery and jump start it. See if you can get it running. Pray that it didn’t destroy some of those complex electronics on it. Those cars are so electronic that they can be very expensive to fix when they break. Have the car inspected by a certified technician, such as one from YourMechanic. They can diagnose the Battery Light and replace the alternator if necessary.

How to Identify and Fix Common car Problems ?

The alternator charges your car battery in synchronisation with a built-in voltage regulator. When this charging system starts to malfunction, the red battery light on your dash will start blinking to warn you in advance. This is a key component in any car, so you may need to replace your alternator if it`s faulty.
When you couple flickering headlights with flickering dashboard lights, the alternator has more than likely worn out. A worn-out alternator typically needs to be replaced. An expert technician at Firestone Complete Auto Care can examine the alternator and determine the best approach.
If your alternator is failing, its voltage may drop below capacity, causing the battery warning light to appear on your dash. Similarly, the battery light will also appear if the alternator is exceeding its voltage limit, depending on how much stress it is under.
The alternator belt is the connection that interfaces the crankshaft and alternator together. If your car`s alternator belt isn`t working properly, your car battery won`t get the charge it needs for your vehicle`s electrical parts. With that, your car battery light will frequently be on to indicate such an issue.
Fast flashing indicates a poor connection between the battery and charger or a problem with the battery pack. Refer to the rechargeable battery does not charge properly using the supplied battery charger article for details. Afterwards, try charging the battery again.
I did a bit of research and found a battery reset is required to resolve the issue. The message can reset by itself, but the car needs to sit undisturbed for at least eight hours. Perhaps with your work/driving schedule the car doesn`t sit long enough.
2. Failing Alternator. When the alternator starts to give out, your car`s electrical output is affected. This could result in flickering, dimming, or inoperative headlights, as the headlights depend on power from the vehicle`s battery.
An effective method to determine whether it`s your battery or alternator that`s gone bad is to connect jumper cables from a running vehicle`s battery to yours. After a few moments, try starting your vehicle. Once it`s started, remove the jumper cables — if your engine stalls, your alternator has probably gone bad.
Your alternator is also responsible for charging your car battery while driving. The alternator works by turning mechanical energy into electrical energy. When your engine is on, it powers a drive belt that rests on a pulley attached to the alternator.
Does a Bad Battery Affect Your Starter or Alternator? A bad battery won`t usually harm your starter or alternator, however, since both of those components get their voltage directly from the battery, if the battery is underperforming, both the alternator`s and starter`s performance will be affected as well.
The most common reason for your vape pen flashing red when charging is a low battery. Most vape pens will flash red to show that the battery is charging, therefore this is typical and anticipated behavior.
The car battery light might come on for a lot of reasons, but generally, the reasons are: An old car battery. Car battery connections that are corroded. Car battery cables that are misconnected.
Check Your Hardware

Make sure your hardware is not faulty. Visually inspect the charging cable and check if there are any signs of damage. If your accessories are damaged, that could explain why your iPhone is flashing on and off while charging. Additionally, make sure the wall power outlet is not loose or faulty.

Your check engine light is flashing or won`t go off.

When a battery is faulty or undercharged, it won`t be able to send the right amount of energy to your vehicle`s computer. This may cause the check engine light to flip on.

2012 equinox reduced power light engine light and traction light came on. Lost a lot of power got home and all light except engine
ANSWER : Your car has what is called a "safe mode" that will be engaged by the computer when it detects that something critical has gone wrong related to any of the major components in your engine chassis or power train. This may be related to a number of things, most of which should have been registered in the computer when the check engine light came on. I recommend having an expert from YourMechanic come to your location to inspect your check engine light and diagnose any codes registered by your vehicle’s computer.

No dash lights, back right tail light is out, no parking lights. Brake lights work though as does head lights.
ANSWER : Hi there. In many cases, when you have electrical problems like you’re describing, it’s caused by multiple electrical component failure. It’s likely that a few electrical relays are not working; especially if you have systems that utilize the same components (such as your brake light and tail lights). I would recommend having a professional mobile mechanic come to your location to complete an electrical problems inspection first, so they can pinpoint what is damaged and recommend the right repairs.

The Battery Light is on and the lights and power mirrors are not working – 2002 Mercedes-Benz C320
ANSWER : Hi. If the Battery Light is on, this an indication that either the battery is bad, the alternator is not charging properly, or both of them are bad. Low battery voltage will cause the car to do abnormal things like have no headlights. There are other things that can cause headlights to not work as well, for example, a blown fuse, broken headlight relay, or, the most common cause, blown headlight bulbs.

I suggest you have a certified technician, such as one from YourMechanic, come to your location to determine why the Battery Light is on and suggest the necessary repairs.

Abs light, emergency brake light, steering wheel assist light, engine light, EPC light, traction control light
ANSWER : Hello, thank you for writing in. The vehicle does utilize a lot of the same sensors for these systems. Are there any other codes that are coming up when this code appears? If so you will want to take these into consideration when processing the repair and making a diagnosis. The module may be bad, and replacing it should fix the problem. The lights should turn off once the main computer recognizes the new module and the sensors sync up. If you believe the sensors need to be cleaned you may do so. Do as minimal as possible to make sure you are not damaging the sensor or disrupting the wiring inside. A bad connection would make the lights stay on. With so many lights that are effected by the module being illuminated, the module is likely bad or does not have a connection. Check the connection first and then resort to replacing the unit. Battery light goes on when I start car then turns off, if I rev engine light comes back until rpms go down. Abs goes comes on/off
ANSWER : Batteries can die due to faults in the charging system so ideally a suspected "faulty" battery should be load tested before a decision is made to condemn it. The only exception to this rule is if the battery is already clearly "old" (greater than 5 years) but even then once you put a new battery in, as a replacement for a "dead" battery, you have to comprehensively check out the charging system. Diagnostic Trouble Code P0460 will result in disruption of the dashboard fuel gauge’s ability to accurately report your tank’s fuel levels. The fuel gauge readings may be erratic, or read somewhere off scale. Vehicles equipped with a low fuel warning light feature may also suffer from erratic low fuel warnings in the event of a code P0460. Unless the P0460 code has been reported alongside other trouble code, all of the vehicle’s essential systems should otherwise function normally. I would recommend that you request a check engine light diagnostic to first resolve the fault causing the P0460 code to set. The check gas cap light warning light could be due a faulty gas cap and/or small leaks in the EVAP system.

signals, daytime running lights are not working, park brake light on dash is on steady and chime is dinging steady 4×4 wont engage
ANSWER : This is likely a brake light switch problem. I would suggest testing the brake light switch which should be located down by the brake pedal. This may also be a computer problem as well as indicated by the other lights on in the dash. I would recommend having an expert from YourMechanic come to your home to possibly replace the brake light switch and diagnose with a scanning tool which will download useful data from the truck’s computer indicating what specifically the problem may be.

Speedometer stopped working, o/d light blinking, check engine light and low tire pressure light are on
ANSWER : All of these problems are most likely linked together by a faulty wheel speed sensor. If the ABS light is on, a fault will be stored pointing to the faulty wheel speed sensor. You may want to enlist the help of a mechanic, such as one from YourMechanic, who will have the equipment to pull the fault code and repair the correct wheel speed circuit or replace your wheel speed sensor entirely.
