Just installed new rear pads, and now I’m getting massive grind, did I do something wrong

I have o4 c230 just installed new rear pads and now I have massive grinding noise, the rotors looked ok.Did I do something wrong
Experienced mechanics share their insights in answering this question :
Hi…I will try to help you with your concern. Thickness variation on a brake rotor cannot exceed .001 inches. If the rotor is measured and it exceeds that value, the rotor is technically unusable, although sometimes, the rotor can be re-surfaced. That amount (.001 inches) is one-fourth the thickness of a typical human hair and so is not perceivable without measuring instruments. When the rotor is installed on the hub, if the "as installed" axial runout exceeds .002 inches, you’ll get pedal pulsation, vibration on braking and other effects such as abnormal pad wear. If the rotor was not resurfaced, or a new one installed from the dealer, NOT from China), that would be the first issue to re-visit. Additional problems occur if the pins on the torque plate are not serviced and if a caliper is re-used that has lots of miles on it and could be sticking shut (not retracting from the disc). Aftermarket brake pads can cause strange noises, too, and that’s why it is always wisest to just use the parts the car was built with. If you want a diagnosis of what is going on and a perfect repair, please just simply request a brake noise diagnostic and a certified mechanic will take all necessary steps to get this resolved promptly. If you have further questions or concerns, do not hesitate to re-contact YourMechanic as we are always here to help you.

How to Identify and Fix Common car Problems ?

Even if you replace the pads or rotors, bits of debris can get caught up during the repair process. This should go away as you continue to drive your car. If you`ve only had your brake pads replaced and not the rotors, the grinding noise could be coming from worn-out rotors.
Possible causes include the backing plate, which is located behind the brake rotor and can get bent and rub on the rotor. This is a simple fix: the technician will just bend it back in place.
Brake grinding can occur for various reasons, such as worn-out brake pads, faulty wheel bearings, rusted or contorted brake rotor, low-quality brake pads, lack of lubrication, and debris lodged in the brake caliper.
After that first 500 miles without overheating the pads, your new brakes will be ready for a few harder stops. What about grinding sounds? Grinding sounds are bad. Definitely have those brakes checked if you hear grinding sounds when you use your brakes.
Driving with grinding brakes is simply not safe. Brakes are a critical component of safe driving and should not be overlooked. If your brakes start to fail: Don`t drive any further.
Some common symptoms of bad rotors include vibration or pulsation in the steering wheel, high-pitched squealing noise when braking, shaking steering wheel, brake pedal pulsing, vehicle taking a long time to stop, loud bangs while braking, large edges on the outer part of the brake rotor, and scratch marks on the rotor.
Resurfacing Your Rotors

Sometimes your rotors may need to be resurfaced because they have worn unevenly, warped from heat, or become damaged by worn brake pads or pitted from corrosion or rust. Resurfacing rotors removes some of their metal, until the surface is smooth and even again.

If you hear a grinding noise when braking but the pads are fine, there are several possible causes. Surface rust on the rotor will make noise until it`s scrubbed off. If you have rear drum brakes, the sound may be coming from trapped brake dust rubbing between the shoe and the drum.
If your brakes emit a sharp grinding sound while braking, it`s likely that the brake disc and the caliper are rubbing together. The sound is usually heard when you stop your car, but you may also feel the brake pedal rumble as you step on it.
They`re usually made with a mix of ceramic and metallic materials. The first few times they`re pressed against the wheel`s spinning rotors can cause both parts to vibrate in a way the produces a squeaking sound. Another possibility is that there could be some moisture on the rotors.
Brake rotors should never be turned more than once. There are many variables that determine if you can turn brake rotors. The design and thickness of the rotor material will affect the tolerances. These specifications will indicate how much material can be safely removed without compromising the rotor integrity.
If you hear grinding noises when stopping or slowing down, your brake pads are most likely the issue. Remember, over time your brake pads lose their thickness and begin to make squealing noises known as “brake scrubbing.” As your pads wear down further, you`ll hear a grinding noise instead.
The source of where the shudder is felt can clue you in as to whether the front or rear brakes are to blame for the shudder. Steering wheel vibrations are often due to an issue with the front rotors while rear rotor troubles will cause vibrations that are felt in the brake pedal.
Your rotors are one of the most durable parts of your car, but the above factors can shorten their lifespan. Expect your rotors to last anywhere from 30,000-70,000 miles depending on the above factors.
The metal-on-metal grinding noise you hear is the steel part of the brake pad grinding against the brake rotor, and it`s not good. You need to get a brake pad replacement immediate when they are shot before they also destroy your rotors or brake calipers, which can be a very expensive repair.

How to identify if my rotor is loose? To check if your rotor is loose, you may begin with basic observation. Give your watch a few shakes and listen to the sound the watch is making. If you hear a scraping sound, which is like a metallic sound that scrapes the case back or movement, your rotor most likely is loose.

I’m getting new tires installed but I can’t afford an alignment for a week. Is that OK?
ANSWER : You should be fine. If you aren’t having a problem with you steering veering to the left or right excessively, or a wear and tear problem then you will be fine. Even if you are having problems with the front end alignment just a week won’t hurt much. If you feel like there are issues with the tires or steering you could wait if you want. Even next week your tires will still be close to brand new. I wouldn’t worry about it too much though unless you are planning on driving across country.

New front pads & rotors (2mths) and hear a grinding noise when coming to a slow gradual stop. What could be causing this?
ANSWER : Hello, thank you for writing in. The last technicians that worked on your vehicle are not wrong. There are certain types of brake pads that will make a squealing noise when the brakes are applied. These are typically made from a metal composite material. You can always research the brand they put on and find out more about the brake pads. This would give you a good idea of what you should reasonably expect. Are the brakes exhibiting any other types of symptoms? If there is any sponginess in the pedal, shaking or vibrating, hard stops, or other symptoms then there may be more cause for concern. In situations like these, if you are expecting to drive the vehicle a longer distance in the near future, it is recommended that you get a second opinion. I’m getting power to distributor coil, but I’m not getting power to the spark plugs.
ANSWER : Hi there. Check the spark plugs with a spark adapter tool to see if there is a park induced from the coil. If there is no spark, then the spark plug wires could be burned and need replaced. If the tool is getting spark, then the spark plugs need replaced. If you need further assistance with your ignition system, then seek out a professional, such as one from Your Mechanic, to help you.

whats a fair price to pay someone to install the new brake drums that i bought for the rear of my car.
ANSWER : Hello, thank you for writing in. It is difficult to say what a "fair price would be". Prices for labor will vary greatly based on your location and services available around you. Due to already having the parts you need, you are looking at the price for labor and brake fluid if needed. There is a strong change you will have to bleed the brakes afterwards. Keep in mind that brake work is a critical safety concern, and having it done right is worth the extra cost. Typically a brake job like this can be done in a few hours. aloha! i was told it would cost me $1870 to get a rear axle replacement. i have a 2006 toyota sequoia with mileage of 80,000. it
ANSWER : Aloha. Ah – the infamous "it’s all gone" excuse. To be quite blunt, you’re being ripped off. If a professional mechanic can’t explain what exactly is damaged with any mechanical component, they are taking advantage of you. I would get your car back and contact a different mechanic. Or, feel free to send us some information about the symptoms your car is experiencing that led you to take the car to the mechanic in the first place. Maybe we can help diagnose your issue and allow you to bring that info to a different mechanic. Mahalo.

Des getting a new ignition mean you have to get a new key?
ANSWER : If you are needing to replace the ignition lock cylinder where you put your key in to start the car, then yes a new key is typically provided with the lock cylinder. Sometimes programming of the key is necessary for it to work properly after the key fob is installed. I would recommend researching how your key needs to be programmed to the car to determine if you can do it yourself or if the dealership has to do it.

We have a new battery, new alternator, new coil pk, new master fuse and the car still won’t hold power.
ANSWER : Hi there. The only thing that I could think possible is causing your problem is that something may not have been correctly installed while your son was completing this maintenance. However, if your engine was difficult to start before this service, it’s possible there are different components that are damaged that simply didn’t resolve the issue. The only way of knowing what is going on with your Trailblazer would be to have one of our mobile mechanics in your area come to your location and complete a car is hard to start inspection.
