Higher revs required to shift between gears

i have 1998 CR-V and engine code indicated the Trans Position Sensor was failing. I have not had issues of car starting in other than PARK. However, the car for last year is lingering between shifts longer than it used to, often requiring higher revs to shift to next gear….especially 2nd to 3rd. Any thoughts?

My car has 168000 miles.
My car has an automatic transmission.

Experienced mechanics share their insights in answering this question :
Hi There,
This can happen for a few different reasons such as low transmission fluid or a faulty control solenoid. An automatic transmission requires hydraulic pressure generated by the transmission fluid that gets pushed through a series of chambers inside the transmission, activating solenoids that cause the transmission to shift at specific intervals. These intervals are controlled by the transmission control module which reads input from transmission speed sensors to determine the rotational speed of the input and output shafts in the transmission. Based upon this information, the control module directs the transmission shifting function. When any of these components are not working properly, you may notice an erratic shifting of gears or in some cases the transmission may not shift at all. I would suggest having a professional from YourMechanic come to your location to take a look at your vehicle.

How to Identify and Fix Common car Problems ?

Generally, you should shift gears up when the tachometer is around “3” or 3,000 RPMs; shift down when the tachometer is around “1” or 1,000 RPMs. After some experience with driving a stick shift, you`ll be able to figure out when to shift by the way your engine sounds and “feels.” More on that below.
Generally, you want to shift gears when your car reaches 2,500-3,000 RPM. Eventually, you will know when to shift by sound and feel.
Worn Out Clutch: Over time a clutch will wear out. The lifespan of a clutch can vary depending on the how the car is driven. Symptoms of a failing clutch not only include hard shifting but also a spongy feel to the clutch and a possible burning smell.
At around 2000-2500rpm (revs per minute), you`ll probably need to change up (depending on the variables outlined above). Equally, you should learn quite quickly how the car feels when you need to change down a gear. It will feel like you`re losing power—and if you don`t change quickly enough, you will stall the engine.
As for the original concern, yes 4000 RPM engine speed should not cause a problem. It is my experience that the Mirage saves more fuel by coasting in neutral than in gear. My advice is for saving fuel, coast in neutral unless you want extra drag to slow down for a stop.
Different cars have different thumb rules by which you can gauge which is the best RPM to shift up or down. In general, it`s best to shift up when you near 3000 RPM and shift down when you near 1000 RPM.
The typical “rule of thumb” with shifting is that when you reach around 3,000 RPM it`s safe, and desirable, to shift. Of course, shift any sooner than reaching 1,500 RPM and it`s safe to say you`ll stall out. Short shifting aims to hit the mid-point between these two numbers.
Honda CR-V manual transmission issues were particularly prevalent in 1997, 1998, 1999 and 2000 models.
Every CR-V comes with continuously variable transmission (CVT).
Generally, it`s helpful to keep the RPMs around 2,000. Now that you`re moving, it will soon be time to switch to second gear. You`ll hear the engine revving a little higher, and the tachometer needle will be somewhere around 3,000 RPMs.
Generally speaking, the faster the engine speed, the more fuel the engine is using. Between 1,300 and 1,500 RPM is the most fuel-efficient engine speed, or what some would call the “sweet spot.”

My gear shift doesn’t shift to any other gear its stuck on neutral. I open the gear assembly and I can pull a lever which allows me to move it.
ANSWER : Hi there. The shifter interlock solenoid is not working and needs replaced. The shifter interlock solenoid makes the shifter lock in place so it does not move if you accidentally move it into another gear. If you need further assistance with your shifter not working, then seek out a professional, such as one from Your Mechanic, to help you.

The car doesn’t shift into first gear while it works fine in reverse
ANSWER : The problem could be that the internal transmission pump is weak, or the transmission clutch seals are leaking. It sounds like the transmission will need an overhaul.

I recommend having a transmission mechanic test the pressures and diagnose the problems to verify whether you need an overhaul with a new torque convertor.

Not shifting into higher gears – 2009 Chevrolet Silverado 1500
ANSWER : It sounds to me like your are having a bit of transmission trouble. First, check the level and condition of the transmission fluid. If the fluid is dark and burned, there may be a mechanical failure inside the unit. If the fluid is clean, there problem might be electrical. A faulted speed sensor signal is an example of something that might cause the transmission to get confused. This type of problem will require thorough visual inspection and testing to confirm the actual problem. I would recommend having a certified professional, like one from YourMechanic, to diagnose the shifting problem and follow through with repairs.

Won’t shift past 2nd gear . It drives normal to 2nd gear but wont shift into 3r – 2000 Ford F150 4×4
ANSWER : Hello – I don’t think this is related to switching back to 2WD per se. There is a shift position sensor on the side of the transmission, and it’s possible that the snow activity caused moisture and/or dirt to get into the sensor. I would recommend a transmission inspection by a mobile, professional mechanic, such as one from YourMechanic, who will come to your location, diagnose this problem, give you an accurate assessment of damage and cost estimate for repairs.

I got sound when I shift to 3rd gear and it’s get hard to put shift to second gear when car is in 3rd gear.
ANSWER : Hello. It sounds as though the synchronizers in the transmission, which are used to adjust transmission internal gear speed when upshifting or downshifting are possibly worn out or you are shifting a bit too fast. It is also possible that the clutch is not releasing fully when you press the clutch pedal. In some conditions, utilizing synthetic gear oil in the transmission can help the quality of gear shifting. If the clutch is not fully releasing an inspection of the clutch hydraulics is a good idea. I would recommend having an inspection of the hard shift completed by a mobile, professional mechanic, such as one from YourMechanic, who will come to your location, diagnose this problem, give you an accurate assessment of damage and cost for repairs.

the car will not shift into any gear, but the gear shift moves
ANSWER : transmission shifting

My 2000 Chevrolet Silverado will not shift into 3d & 4th gear or reverse only into 2nd gear
ANSWER : Hello. Most of the time when this occurs with this noise it is because the sun shell in the transmission broke. This is very common. The transmission would need to be rebuilt to fix it. I would recommend taking it to a transmission specialist for this.
