Engine light came on suddenly

Suddenly engine light came on as well as a message saying reduced engine power and service traction control? The car doesn't feel to be running any differently but I'm terrified to drive it! What could this be? I recently took it in to have it serviced for the air bag recall required by Chevy and they didn't find any other issues, although the seat belt light is on again now.

My car has 69000 miles.
My car has an automatic transmission.

Experienced mechanics share their insights in answering this question :
Hello. Typically when the reduced engine power light becomes a factor, the engine itself runs much slower and will lack power on acceleration. The vehicle needs to be scanned for diagnostic codes. From there the codes we already know are alarming can be ignored, and you may be able to find a code that is related to the actual problem. Due to the engine not having any driving issues, there is likely something wrong with the sensors or the computer. This would include any issues with the power supply and fuses. Only further testing will tell, but there is likely a bad ground, short, bad fuse box, issue with the computer, or other electrical fault. Start by having the vehicle scanned, and take diagnostics from there.

How to Identify and Fix Common car Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced mechanics :

The reasons for a check engine light turning on can range from something minor like a loose gas cap to something more serious like a faulty catalytic converter. It could even be a sign of internal engine failure. Ignoring the problem can turn a potentially quick fix into a costly and time-consuming repair.
Chevy Impala Check Engine Light Flashing

Other generally common reasons for a Check Engine Light are damaged oxygen sensor, defective head gasket, defective emissions control part, a malfunction with the fuel injection system, dirty mass airflow sensor, or damaged spark plugs to name a few.

A check engine light will shut itself off if the condition that caused it is remedied. So, if your converter is marginal, and you did a lot of stop-and-go driving, which creates high demand for the converter, that may have turned on the check engine light.
If the check engine light in your Chevrolet Impala starts flashing, that means that the problem needs attention instantly and your Chevrolet should be brought in expeditiously. This blinking light usually indicates a severe engine misfire allowing unburned fuel to be dumped into the exhaust system.
Will your check engine light turn off by itself? In most cases, successfully repairing the issue that caused your light to come on will cause the check engine light to turn off automatically—but only after 10 to 20 “cycles”.
The Check Engine light might be triggered by most anything affecting the monitored systems, from just a loose gas cap or bad spark plug, to a pricey computer control module or catalytic converter. Check your gas cap first.
Reset A Check Engine Light: Two Techniques

Start the car, let it run for one second, and then turn it off. Let the engine sit quietly for two to three seconds, and then repeat the whole process two more times.

The check engine light illuminates when your vehicle`s computer believes there is a problem that could affect — or is affecting — your car`s emissions control system. When the light comes on, one or more diagnostic trouble codes are stored in the car`s computer. These codes will stay there even if the light goes out.
The check engine light should go off after you drive for several minutes if the light was caused by a loose gas cap. Pay attention to the dashboard after the check engine light experience. If you find that the light keeps coming on, and goes off again once you tighten the gas cap, then your gas cap is too loose.
If there`s a problem, the light will just come back

When you reset your computer`s memory, the warning light will turn off. However, if there`s a problem, the light will come back on as soon as the computer runs the test that caused the light in the first place.

The check engine light is constantly on: Your vehicle`s onboard diagnostic system has determined something is wrong and needs to be fixed. Although your vehicle may seem to be operating fine, it`s best to bring it in for service as soon as possible to prevent additional issues.
These problems can range from faults within the electrical system, the engine, fluid levels or to problems within the car`s emissions system. The problem can even be as simple as forgetting to tighten your gas cap – in fact, this is the most common reason why check engine lights appear in the first place.
A dirty air filter can cause your vehicle to throw a Check Engine code. During this instance, the Check Engine Light of your vehicle will turn on. The light turns on because your vehicle is sensing that its engine isn`t receiving enough air.
It is possible that your automobile`s check engine light has come on because of a false alarm. This being said, if the engine control module (ECM) turned on the check engine light for no reason, the ECM could be malfunctioning itself. This crucial part is the heart of your automobile.
A steady check engine light indicates a non-emergency issue, such as a loose gas cap. Flashing check engine lights warn of severe situations requiring immediate attention. Standardized diagnostic codes help identify the trouble.
How long can you drive with the check engine light on? Once you see the check engine light, it is safe to drive with the light on for 50 to 100 miles. This is because if the issue is with the sensors, then this will buy some time for it to reset, turning the check engine light off.

2012 equinox reduced power light engine light and traction light came on. Lost a lot of power got home and all light except engine
ANSWER : Your car has what is called a "safe mode" that will be engaged by the computer when it detects that something critical has gone wrong related to any of the major components in your engine chassis or power train. This may be related to a number of things, most of which should have been registered in the computer when the check engine light came on. I recommend having an expert from YourMechanic come to your location to inspect your check engine light and diagnose any codes registered by your vehicle’s computer.

Battery light goes on when I start car then turns off, if I rev engine light comes back until rpms go down. Abs goes comes on/off
ANSWER : Batteries can die due to faults in the charging system so ideally a suspected "faulty" battery should be load tested before a decision is made to condemn it. The only exception to this rule is if the battery is already clearly "old" (greater than 5 years) but even then once you put a new battery in, as a replacement for a "dead" battery, you have to comprehensively check out the charging system. Diagnostic Trouble Code P0460 will result in disruption of the dashboard fuel gauge’s ability to accurately report your tank’s fuel levels. The fuel gauge readings may be erratic, or read somewhere off scale. Vehicles equipped with a low fuel warning light feature may also suffer from erratic low fuel warnings in the event of a code P0460. Unless the P0460 code has been reported alongside other trouble code, all of the vehicle’s essential systems should otherwise function normally. I would recommend that you request a check engine light diagnostic to first resolve the fault causing the P0460 code to set. The check gas cap light warning light could be due a faulty gas cap and/or small leaks in the EVAP system.

Check engine light refuses to go off after engine replaced
ANSWER : Hello there, you have a long series of issues going on with your 2013 Hyundai Sonata. If you keep getting a repeating oil light on than there is likely a fault in that system.

Since this fault has lasted after the engine was replaced it could be a oil pressure sensor, wiring harness fault, ECU fault, oil pump, oil strainer clogged, or low oil pressure.

To diagnose this issue properly you need a complete vehicle inspection to start from square one and identify the root cause of all this.

Honda Civic 2008. AC stopped working suddenly and engine check light came ON for a day.Next day AC worked and no engine light.
ANSWER : Hi there. In both cases, when an AC system is not working and a warning light is coming on the dashboard, typically a professional mechanic will complete the same initial inspection, which is to download the stored error codes that triggered the warning light initially. This tends to give them an idea as to what is causing the problems. This could be something as simple as an electrical relay that is faulty or loose or an indication of a computer related "glitch". Either way, the best way to move forward is to have a professional mobile mechanic complete a check engine light inspection.

Car started to slow down and then the check engine light, battery, and engine oil light came on. What could cause this?
ANSWER : Hi there. It is possible that the battery cable came loose or the wires to the oil pressure sensor has came loose or failed. Check the battery cables and make sure that the terminals are tight and clean. Check the wires to the oil pressure sensor and make sure that they are connected and not broken. If everything looks good, then the oil pressure sensor may have failed. Plus, check the computer for codes and see what is stored. This will lead you to the part that could have failed. I recommend replacing the oil pressure sensor then checking to see if the lights will go out. If you need further assistance troubleshooting your vehicle, then seek out a technician, such as one from Your Mechanic, that can assist you with the warning lights that came on.

my check engine light came on a few weeks ago and said it was coolant issue light went out and a few days ago it came back on
ANSWER : Your vehicle has less than 60,000 miles and inasmuch as you mention a possible fault in the engine cooling system, you should check for warranty coverage under Chrysler’s 5 year/60,000 miles powertrain warranty. If you are not covered under the manufacturer warranty, I recommend you request an overheating diagnostic from YourMechanic simply because a car that is overheating is essentially inoperable. You will ruin the engine if it gets hot enough, by warping essential engine components, so overheating has to be resolved before the issue with the electronic throttle is addressed. In your case, inasmuch as the Check Engine Light (CEL) has come on as well, the Mechanic will download the diagnostic trouble codes that always set when the CEL illumuninates and use those trouble codes as clues to resolving the issue you are having.

Engine light and bad gears
ANSWER : When you disconnect the battery, the PCM (powertrain control module) looses it’s stored information about your driving habits. Believe it or not, the car learns how you drive, and tries to adapt to your style, so things may not go smoothly for a while after disconnecting the battery until the car can "re-learn" the settings. But if you have a malfunction, a code will be stored. Usually the check engine light doesn’t come on until the second time the PCM has seen the fault, but there will still be a pending code that is there for anyone to read who knows how to access it. If you don’t think the dealer is serving you well, contact Your Mechanic. They will send a technician out to your home or office to read the codes on your car and tell you what can be done about it.

Abs light, emergency brake light, steering wheel assist light, engine light, EPC light, traction control light
ANSWER : Hello, thank you for writing in. The vehicle does utilize a lot of the same sensors for these systems. Are there any other codes that are coming up when this code appears? If so you will want to take these into consideration when processing the repair and making a diagnosis. The module may be bad, and replacing it should fix the problem. The lights should turn off once the main computer recognizes the new module and the sensors sync up. If you believe the sensors need to be cleaned you may do so. Do as minimal as possible to make sure you are not damaging the sensor or disrupting the wiring inside. A bad connection would make the lights stay on. With so many lights that are effected by the module being illuminated, the module is likely bad or does not have a connection. Check the connection first and then resort to replacing the unit.
